Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Regina Caéli is the Marian Antiphon that is prescribed for use during the Easter Season (from Easter Sunday through Pentecost). It is sung or recited at the conclusion of compline, the last of the canonical hours prayed on a daily basis. It is also used in place of the Angelus prayer during this same liturgical season. In our parish, we sing this following the dismissal at weekday Mass The text of the prayer itself dates to the 12th Century. As the musical notation system of Gregorian Chant started to become finalized around the same time period (with the basics of notation being developed around the 10th Century and the 4-line system still used today becoming standard by the early 13th Century), it remains one of the Church’s best examples of a text and melody being composed together and remaining as such, unaltered, into modern times. Other texts, such as the Veni Emmanuel predate this by several centuries, but the history of the tune is murky. Thus, the Regina Caéli holds an important historical, liturgical, and devotional history. Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia. The Son you merited to bear, alleluia, Has risen as he said, alleluia. Pray to God for us, alleluia.
Saint of the Week: St. Anselm of Canterbury, Bishop and Doctor, 1033-1109
“Easter Duty” The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5-6, 2022 to Trinity Sunday, June 12, 2022. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.
Born in Aosta (now Valle D’Aosta in northwest Italy), Anselm developed a love of God and a love of learning from his mother. When he was fifteen, Anselm sought to enter a monastery. Fearing the displeasure of his father, the monks turned Anselm away. Nevertheless, Anselm determined to someday become a monk. A few years later, after his mother died, Anselm felt free to pursue his goal. With a companion, he set out on a journey which eventually led him to the Abbey at Bec in Normandy. This abbey had become renowned for the teaching of the prior, Lanfranc. Anselm became a student and protégé of Lanfranc. Anselm advanced quickly and, soon, he was helping Lanfranc with teaching. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter. Most of our reflections on the paschal mystery revolve around reminders that being plunged into the dying and rising mystery of Christ through our baptism means we must die to self if we wish to share in Jesus’ eternal life. We look for ordinary opportunities in our daily living to die to self and thus transform what appears to be ordinary, human actions into extensions of the ministry of the Good Shepherd himself. For example, comforting the sick and dying isn’t simply a caring human action; in the context of our baptismal commitment it is an expression of Jesus’ love for us and the dignity of the other as member of the body of Christ. This is true and surely the heart of the mystery. This Sunday, however, we might turn this around and rest a bit in what the Good Shepherd offers us when we live the paschal mystery: eternal life, the assurance that we will never perish. For all our efforts at dying to self, they do not equal the gift of self that Jesus gives us. Sometimes we are so caught up in the effort of dying that we do forget that new life is already within us and among us. This is a good Sunday to bask in Jesus’ care and protection, listen to his voice calling us to his loving, embracing hands, and rejoice in the goodness showered upon us who are faithful to his call. This, too, is living the paschal mystery. This weekend we will celebrate our parish May Crowning at and following the Saturday 5pm Mass. This is a custom that has evolved through the centuries. It serves as an opportunity for us to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of the Church and the first disciple (believer) in the mission and ministry of her Son. This also reminds each of us that mothers are those who cooperate with God in the transmission of Life and Faith. Happy Mothers Day.
This coming week I will have completed 9 years as pastor (8 May) of this venerable community; next week I week I will complete thirty years of priestly ministry (16 May). I am grateful to almighty God for the many and varied blessings bestowed upon me. Some of these blessings were immediately recognizable while others became recognizable over time. Regardless, God has continued to sustain me especially through those with whom I collaborate as a priest and a pastor. The readings and images of the Easter Season help us to reflect on the actions and choices of Jesus’ earliest followers as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. Time and time again we, like those early disciples, are called to walk the walk. It is not enough for us to pay lip service to what we believe and acknowledge to be true. Take time during this Spring Season to reflect on the great gift of faith that we have received pondering how we might effectively share it with those around us. This is the fruit of our Lenten Discipline when we acknowledge our excesses and have them washed away through Sacramental Penance & Reconciliation as we prepared for the renewal of our Baptismal Promises on Easter Sunday. Throughout the Easter Season the rubrics of the Roman Missal suggest that the faithful may make the Profession of Faith each Sunday by reciting the Apostle’s Creed. In our parish we observe this custom throughout the Easter Season. We will publish soon the 2022 Easter Collection Report. If you have not made your gift please do so today. We continue to make slow and steady progress toward our parish goal for the 2022 Annual Catholic Appeal. Many thanks to those who have already participated. Please make you gift today if you have not done so already. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in our prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
