Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Creed

The Nicene Creed (more formally called the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed) is the profession of faith for all Roman Catholics, those in the Eastern Churches, and many protestant denominations. During the early years of the Church, many heresies began to emerge and the church fathers saw a problem that needed to be addressed. In the early 4th century, the heretical teachings of Arianism were being spread by a priest, Arius of Alexandria. The principal problem of Arianism was concerned with trinitarian theology, specifically Christology - and taught that Jesus Christ was begotten by God, but did not always exist before time began, thus denying that the Son was co-eternal with the Father, and thus only the Father is independent of his own existence, stripping the Son of his divinity.

The Council of Nicaea was convened in 325 to address this controversy. Out of this council came the first version of the Creed, built upon earlier texts (which bear a resemblance to the Apostles’ Creed), and was later revised and solidified at the Second Ecumenical Council in Constantinople in 381. This is the version still in use today, and codifies our belief in the Trinity and very specifically the nature of Jesus as being both divine and human, died, risen and ascended.

The Apostle’s Creed follows the shorter form found in the proto-creeds that predate the First Ecumenical Council, but was later revised sometime in the 8th century. It is a common practice to substitute the Apostles’ Creed during Lent or Easter, during recitation of the Rosary or the Liturgy of the Hours.

Saint of the Week:

Francisco and Jacinta, Children, d. 1919 and 1920

One has a tendency to think that, short of martyrdom, saints lived relatively long lives devoted to prayer and good works. Francisco and Jacinta Marto, ages 11 and 10 at their deaths, demonstrate to us that even young children maybe especially young children are very close to God and can also become saints.

Born in the early 20th Century in a small village near Fatima, Portugal, this brother and sister, like other peasant children of their time, were sent out into the fields to shepherd the flocks at an age when most children would be starting school.

“Easter Duty”

The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year often called “Easter duty” for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 26, 2023 to Trinity Sunday, June 4, 2023. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter. Jesus’ claim that he is the “way and the truth and the life” is a sweeping one that dares us to see Jesus as everything we need to come to the fullness of resurrection life ourselves. The “way” is not very appealing—dying to ourselves, self-emptying for the sake of others. The good news and truth is that we follow Jesus’ way in less dramatic, everyday ways. Our simple acts of reaching out to others, alleviating their own suffering or eliminating their need (whatever it might be) is how we follow Jesus’ way. How sensitive the early Christian community was—to appoint more members to take care of the needy so that the ministry of the word would not suffer. This balance—paying attention to both worship and service—is Jesus’ way to eternal life.

Throughout this month of May we celebrate the Memorial of Saint Rita of Cascia, known as the “Pearl of Umbria” and patron saint of “the impossible”. I have prayed at the reliquary containing her remains and once was taken by the Mother Prioress to the area where the glass case was opened. My devotion has evolved through the years, especially in light of some of my journey as a priest. Later in the month is the Solemnity of the Ascension, the Fortieth Day of Easter. Monday, 29 May 2023 is Memorial Day. We will celebrate Mass at 9 am and invite all to come and pray for all those who sacrificed their lives, those who are making the sacrifice and those who will sacrifice their lives for the freedom that we enjoy. There is also a parade and ceremony that is organized by our civic leaders in 07722. Why not come to mass and make your way to the township campus and participate in these activities?

We will gather for the Annual May Crowning on Saturday, 6 May 2023 following the 4:00pm Mass. Please consider joining us for this tradi-

tional spiritual act entrusting our parish community to the loving embrace of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Seat of Wisdom.

Summer Mass Schedule begins Memorial Day Weekend with Saturday Mass at 5:00pm throughout the Summer. Memorial Day Weekend is also an “Abbreviated Mass Schedule” with 2 masses Saturday 5:00pm; Sunday 10:00am. Please make a note in your personal schedules. Thank you for your kind cooperation.

An accounting of this year’s Easter Collection will soon be offered for your review. Many thanks to all those who have participated this year. If you have not made your Easter Gift this year, please do so as soon as possible. Thanks for all your generous and faithful stewardship to our parish community. Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers/ Grandmothers/ Great Grandmothers / God Mothers & Expectant Mothers. May God sustain you in your noble vocation.

I had an enjoyable time away for some rest and recreation. It is important to get away and slowdown in order to be more focused and better serve. This year May and June are filled with many events and a higher than average number of weddings here in our parish church. Let us pray for these couples and their families as they begin the Sacramental Life of Marriage.

Thanks for your patience these past few days as we prepare for some unplanned and nonbudgeted work to the septic system for the Parish Office Building on our campus. The pipes are 40or so years old. They are also under the designated access road covered by grass (only in 07722). We are working to restore these lines as timely and responsibly as possible. Thank you for your support, patience and cooperation. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Mother’s Day. Happy Sunday! Peace. Father Jeff

LETTING ART SPEAK – TO JESUS THROUGH MARY IN JOYS AND SORROWS

Monday, May 15 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM Mary knows about Motherhood. And so do we

even if we’ve never birthed a child. Everyone is a mother, had a mother or has provided motherly care to someone to whom we didn’t give birth – or all of the above. Let’s recall Mary’s role of Motherhood and see what we can learn from it. We have never met her, but know her through Scripture, through the tradition of the Church, in our prayer and through art. During this retreat day, we’ll approach Mary through all of these and ponder what her life has to say to us today. Led by JoLynn Krempecki.

Donation: $25, includes lunch; Zoom $20.

THE GIFT OF ASCENDING

Thursday, May 18 1:00 – 4:00 pm

“Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?

This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven

will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

On the day of the Ascension, angels advised the Apostles to not spend their time looking to the heavens to find Jesus! Do we need a similar reminder? Come, join our exploration, as we seek to find the presence of Jesus in Scripture, in nature, in silence, in life's events and in our own hearts. Led by Sister Marie
