Why sing the psalms?

The psalms are a direct link to our ancestors and their lives in worship at the time before Christ walked the Earth. Mostly attributed to King David, but also co-authored by 10 or more elders, the content of the psalms fall into 5 broad categories: Praise to God * Lament/Sorrow * Kingship of God * Thanksgiving * Wisdom and Prophecy The Scriptures encourage us to sing "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God" (Col. 3:16) The psalms were originally written with the intent that they be SUNG, they were not merely poems. That tradition continues to the modern day, with many composers creating many musical settings of the psalms, from ancient chants that still survive, to Renaissance motets, to modern chants and metrical settings. It is imperative that we continue to sing them in our modern age, as they are the prayers of the people, and in communal worship they become powerful.

The next time you are at Mass, be sure to sing the antiphon of the psalm, let us have the whole congregation join in song! And, listen to the text of the verses, and how it relates both to the reading before it, and to your life today.

Fall 2018-2019 Religious Education Registration is now open What are the particulars?

Grades available for Fall Program: Grades 1-8 (those children entering these grades in September 2018) on a first come, first serve basis. Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the exception of first graders). However all families must be registered parishioners for 1 year prior to enrolling.

Grades 1 & 2: Two year First Penance & Reconciliation & First Eucharist Preparation.

On-Campus Tuesdays.

Grade 3 - 6: Faith and Life On-Line Program Grade 7 & 8: Confirmation Preparation. Sunday evening Tuition: st th  May 1 through June 28 , 7:30 pm the reduced tuition of $200 per child will apply.

(Full payment must be completed by 7:30 pm June 28 to qualify for the reduced tuition) th th  June 28 , 7:30 pm through August 15 7:30 pm the tuition rate of $250 a child will apply.

The registration process, including all payments, must be completed by midnight, 31 August 2018.

No Re-Registration (returning students) after midnight, 31 August 2018.

Once your registration has been received and capacity is verified an invoice will be sent back for final payment. Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter.

Yes, the command is simple: “love one another.” The demand is imposing: lay down our lives.

Keeping God’s commandments is laying down our lives—we surrender our will to doing God’s will and in this is the dying. Caring for and reaching out to others is laying down our lives—also a dying. Doing the little things every day not because we have to but because we see the other as the beloved of God is dying. We choose all these and other ways to dying because we know this is love and love is risen Life rising to kiss us with a share in divinity.

Let us welcome family members, friends and guests of our First Holy Communion Children. It is a great day for the Church as we welcome members to the Eucharistic Table as they continue their journey toward Full Membership when the Sacrament of Confirmation is conferred.

It is the responsibility of the entire parish to assist, encourage and evangelize. May we remain open to God’s outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our midst in order to accomplish the work entrusted to us. As we grow in our faith, may God’s grace continue to enable us to be welcoming and steadfast witnesses to our faith in our daily living.

The Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord is celebrated this week. This observance marks the 40th Day of the Easter Season. It is

a holy day of obligation. We have prepared a Mass schedule for your convenience. Please make your plans accordingly.

Our parish has been and continues to be blessed by many faithful volunteers who heed the call of Stewardship to share of their Time, Talent & Treasure for the building up of the Church and the Evangelization of others.

There are many ways in which to serve. Please contact me or a member of the parish staff if you are interested in learning more. A special request goes to those who have recently retired from their careers. Retirement is truly a time to give back. It is a time to do something that can truly make a difference in the life of the community.

Thanks to Tom Kinlin for overseeing the Chapel Garden and to Linda Dickinson-Pancila for planting the urns and hanging baskets in the courtyard and front of the church.

The Easter Collection Report should be published Pentecost Weekend. Thank you for your generous support, sharing and prayer.

This coming week, 8 May to be exact, I have completed five years of service to Saint Mary Parish as Pastor…Year 6 has begun! May God continue to open our hearts and minds in prayer and service as we build upon the firm foundation that has been prepared for us.

Frequently Asked Questions about ACA: How is this campaign different from the Faith to Move Mountains campaign?

The Annual Catholic Appeal helps to fund the ongoing operating expenses of the diocese from day to day. Funds received in this campaign will be dispersed as described in our brochure during the following 12 month period. The Faith to Move Mountains Endowment campaign is a response to long term and extraordinary needs. Its major objective is to establish new or increase existing endowments to fund anticipated increases in expenses over the long-term.

Pledge cards are available on the credenzas in the back of the Church.

Our FTMM goal included 3 years ( 2016-2018) of the ACA. We encourage our parishioners— especially those who did not make a pledge to the FTMM — to support this year’s ACA and respond to Our Bishop’s call.

“Julia Child” Will be at the Martha Mary Guild’s May Meeting Wednesday, May 9, 2018 Julia Child is coming to the May meeting of the Martha Mary Guild – through the magnificent talent of Linda Kenyon! Linda has brought Eleanor Roosevelt and Babe Didrikson Zaharias, (America’s greatest female athlete) to our meetings in the past. It truly felt like a visit from these famous celebrities, due to this multi-talented actor of stage, television, film and commercial productions.

Linda is going to focus on Julia Child’s relationship with her husband, Paul. Through the years, so many women have been influenced by Julia Child’s cookbooks and TV cooking shows, where she exemplified that if you make a mistake – just start over – don’t give up! She loved butter very much, stating that it added another dimension to a recipe and the taste would be superb. But, the love of her life was her husband! Linda will delve into that very loving relationship at this special meeting on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 – the final meeting until Sept. All are invited to come to the Spiritual Center’s Chapel for the rosary at 11:30 a.m. After the rosary, there will be BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch), with refreshments provided by the Guild, in Madonna Hall. Linda will “become Julia Child” at 12:30 p.m.
