May Crowning The month of May is traditionally associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Paul VI identified the month of May as a time to incorporate specific prayers for peace. And Mary, being Queen of Peace, brings these special prayers to her son, Jesus Christ. The crowning of an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a tradition in the Catholic Church, wherein a crown woven out of flowers is placed upon a statue of Mary to signify her role as the Queen of Heaven and Mother of God. In small towns where church and home life are heavily intertwined, this practice always takes place on the 1st day of May. Other customs include the Sunday closest to this day, following the “high Mass” of the day, or on Mother’s Day. In our Parish, our tradition is to crown the statue following the Saturday evening Mass near the beginning of the month of May. There is a prescribed rite for the Crowning of an Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary which we follow. The priest or deacon proclaims a prescribed prayer and the image is crowned. The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary follows, wherein the faithful present pray for the intercession of the Blessed Mother, and call her by her many titles. (Queen of Peace, Mother of Mercy, etc) Individual devotions often take place following the rite, but are not prescribed. Traditionally, the rosary is not prayed during this event, but it is encouraged that those who pray the rosary at home or at church do so in the presence of an image of the Blessed Mother during the month of May.

An abbreviated Sunday Mass schedule will be implemented during holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Fourth Sunday of Advent, and Holy Family, where the only Sunday Mass will be 10 am. This is due to the availability during these holidays & vacations of Liturgical Ministers & Parish families. Memorial Day Weekend Mass Schedule Saturday May 25 - 5 pm ( 4 pm Penance and Reconciliation) Sunday May 26 - 10 am ONLY Please check page 2 of the bulletin for accurate Mass schedules for the following week.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter. Resurrected life has its demands— but Jesus gives us all we need in terms of abundance and nourishment in order to meet those demands. The incredible thing about our God is that God provides us with all we need, beginning with offering us new life. Accepting the abundance that God offers means that by following Jesus we become Jesus’ resurrected presence, those who lead others to him. Every day we must take care that our actions announce God’s blessings at the same time that they speak of God’s goodness and care. Leading others to Jesus doesn’t mean doing big things; it means doing the little things well and so reflecting the Life in us. During the Easter Season the Church joyfully celebrates the Sacraments in a very special way. Gathered in the glow of the paschal candle we baptize, confirm, offer holy communion, and witness marriages. All of this is central to the life of any parish community. However, the priority of the community must be the faithful and reverent celebration of the Eucharist each Sunday. It is this experience of the Lord in the holy communion, the scriptures proclaimed and preached, and the gathering of the faithful that we are identified as Catholics, nourished to be witnesses in the world and given our mission to go forth. Our parish catechetical ministry is central to advancing the mission which we receive from the Lord. We can only effectively go forth in mission if we possess a conscious longing to be one with the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. Let us continue to pray for our clergy and lay leaders as we assist parents and families in passing on the faith. As we prepare others for the paschal sacraments may we be renewed with them in our understanding of what it means to be one in Christ Jesus the Lord. This weekend we welcome parishioner families who are presenting their children for their First Holy Communion. It is a wonderful time for a parish to assist these families as they are forming their children in our Roman Catholic Faith. We will welcome another group of children and their families next weekend. It is the Eucharist that draws us together as a community of faith. Let us continue to provide the very best for all of our parishioners and visitors.

Many thanks to all those who worked to provide the 2019 Easter Egg Hunt. It is always so great to see young people volunteering to take the lead in providing for events sponsored by our parish. I am grateful to many for heeding the invitation to car pool on Easter Sunday. I saw so many who did and it made a huge difference in our ability to welcome so many for the Masses, especially the 10:15 and 12 noon Easter Sunday Masses. Thank you. We have adopted an abbreviated Mass Schedule for the Summer Weekends of Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Consultation of Pastoral Council, Finance Council, Trustees, and Staff was sought. The reason for this is that there are an extraordinary number of parishioners who are absent these weekends due to vacations, summer homes and sporting events. These absences result in a lack of liturgical ministers. Our parish strives to offer the best worship we can and, for the most part, recognizing the needs for “convenience”. We will continue to do this as long as we can adequately provide for this. Thank you for your kindness and cooperation in this matter. Preparations continue to be made for the new fiscal year beginning July 1, 2019. There will be some adjustments to staffing and some programmatic changes in the coming year. Capital projects are under review. Approvals are pending how the funding mechanisms emerge. All of this is possible through your generous sharing of time, talent, and treasure. Our Increased Offertory Program has been well received and as such we have completely eliminated Parish Fund -Raising in order to provide revenue for annual operating and capital expenses for the foreseeable future. As always, your generosity as stakeholders makes the difference. Please make your contribution to the 2019 Easter Collection this week if you have not done so already. We need everyone to participate. May God continue to reward each of you for your generous sharing in order that the Church might continue to proclaim Christ Crucified, Died and Risen! Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

‘Soul Kitchen’ and ‘Empty Bowls’ On May 8, 2019, the Martha Mary Guild will have a two part, but integrated program presentation which will conclude our 2018-2019 season. Lauren Brajure will speak about the (JBJ Soul Foundation) SOUL KITCHEN Community Restaurant, located in Red Bank and Toms River, where individuals or families can go to eat a hot, nutritious meal in a warm, welcoming setting and meet their neighbors. The aim of Soul Kitchen is to empower individuals by providing volunteer opportunities to earn dining certificates to feed themselves and their family, and by providing job training in the food industry. Paying customers help effect change by donating enough to cover the cost of the volunteer customers. The customers are treated with dignity and respect, while uniting communities and forming healthy and lasting relationships through food. The second part of the program will feature Mil Wexler Kobrinski, a local artist, who will speak to us on behalf of EMPTY BOWLS, which is a group of teachers, artists and students who have banded together in using art to promote hunger awareness. An empty bowl is a powerful symbol of food insecurity! As a community they create pottery bowls, glaze and sell them for SOUL KITCHEN. Our own Martha Mary Guild members, Ginny La Morte and Pat Yoczis, have been active with EMPTY BOWLS. The money from the sales goes to ‘Pay It Forward’ for a person in need to have a free meal at SOUL KITCHEN. Bowls will be available for sale. At this meeting, we will be collecting bathing suits (ages 5-13) and beach towels for Kateri Summer Camp and we thank you for your consistent generosity. The organizations that our Guild helps are all very grateful! All are invited to attend this wonderful program, which will surely make us eager to visit Soul Kitchen soon! Come at 11:30 to join us in the Spiritual Center Chapel for the rosary. Bring your lunch into Madonna Hall, where Guild members will have delicious desserts ready for you. The presentation will start around noon.

The Diocese of Trenton Jail & Prison Ministry is in great need of volunteers to visit our incarcerated brothers and sisters, to remind them of God’s great love and mercy for them. We serve multiple State and County Correctional Centers as well as the Federal Prison at Ft. Dix. Our volunteers conduct Communion Services, Bible Studies and Prayer Services, as well as offering the gift of Listening and Pastoral Presence. If you are interested in sharing faith, hope and love with this often forgotten population, we will be conducting information sessions throughout the Diocese. Please call the Ministry Coordinator, Peter Haas at 609-403-7198 or email him at phaas@dioceseoftrenton.org. Please leave your name, phone number, email and parish. We will contact you with the date, time and location of the information sessions. Thank you. 400 Route 35 North South Mantoloking, NJ 08738
