The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity The mystery of the Holy Trinity, one God in three persons, is something we celebrate and are familiar with. We begin all things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Mass, in particular, begins and ends with the sign of the cross. We baptize using the Trinitarian formula, and bless ourselves thusly every time we enter a sacred space. As such, the fact that we dedicate a Sunday to the Trinity is no mystery to the faithful. But WHY we do it, and WHEN we do it has some significance.

In the early church, there was no special feast day dedicated to the trinity. However, as the belief in the triune God is a core tenet of Catholic faith, there were many devotions to the Trinity, and during the 11th century, it was petitioned to have a special feast. This was rejected by Pope Alexander II, with his rationale that the daily glorification of the Trinity through the Trinitarian blessings and doxological recitations (the “through him and with him…in the unity of the holy spirit” that concludes the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and the Gloria Patri included at the end of psalms and other prayers) was sufficient.

The Son is not the Father, the Father is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father, etc…but all are God! Later, in the 14th century, Pope John XXII did indeed order the feast to be celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and in the modern era after the second Vatican Council, has the rank of a Solemnity. This date was chosen as it was the Sunday following the fulfillment of the promise Christ made to his disciples. The Father sent the Son, and through the intercession of the Son, thus followed the Spirit. As the Trinity was so recognized by Christ’s own disciples, so too would that now be celebrated by all the faithful.

Reinstating the General Obligation to Attend Mass ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE NEW JERSEY BISHOPS

The Catholic Bishops of New Jersey have announced on May 20, 2021 that they are lifting the dispensation of the Sunday and Holy Days Mass obligation beginning on Saturday, June 5, 2021, and Sunday, June 6, 2021. We are very pleased to welcome our parishioners to return to the regular participation in the Sunday Eucharist, the source and summit of our Catholic faith.

This obligation, naturally, does not apply to those who are ill, recently exposed to the coronavirus or another serious or contagious illness, confined to their home, a hospital, or nursing facility, or with serious underlying health conditions.

Keep in mind all safety protocols (such as wearing masks, social distancing, etc.) and liturgical at St Mary will remain in place until modified or revoked by Bishop David M. O’ Connell.

1st and 2nd graders are on campus and have a choice of time on Tuesdays as follows: 4:30-5:40 pm Or 5:50-7:00pm

3rd - 6th graders have weekly virtual LIVE classes through Google Classroom.

The two choices are: Tuesday 4:30-5:30 Or Wednesday 6:00pm -7:00 pm Each student must attend at least 4 intergenerationals throughout the school year as part of their yearly RE requirement.

Once you have completed the intergenerational participation sheet, please either email it directly to Julia Cullen or drop off at the parish office by June 1st.

FIRST COMMUNION UPDATE First Communion will be held in October 2021 for the current year 2nd graders, as well as any family that chose to defer their child last year.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of The Most Holy Trinity. Liturgy does for us what the Deuteronomy texts did for Israel of old: helps us remember God’s mighty deeds and enter into a covenantal relationship with the Divine. Liturgy calls us to gather to as, “Who is this God?” Knowing God isn’t something we can find out in the abstract; knowing God is dependent concretely on our doing—in taking up Christ’s mission and living our own privileged identity as daughters and sons of God “until the end of the age.” Without doing as Jesus did, we cannot answer “Who is God?” This doing is nothing less than to “suffer with” Christ (second reading), which means a constant dying to self. By our own self-emptying are we filled with the divine identity.

The Solemnity of Pentecost was a wonderful experience this year. Thanks to all those who wore some article of clothing that was red. This helped us to decorate the Church building. Join us for Mass this Monday at 9:00am in the Church as we observe the Civic Memorial Holiday. This is a wonderful way to pray for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The Colts Neck Recreation Department will sponsor the annual Memorial Day Parade at 10:00am beginning at the municipal complex along Heyers Mill Road with a ceremony at Memorial Park and concluding at the Fire House. This is a great way to talk with children and young people about the true reason for Memorial Day. Next Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The Eucharist is the center of our life as Roman Catholic Christians. It is the Eucharist that makes the Church and it is the Church that makes the Eucharist. Everything we do and who we are flows from the Eucharist. That is why the Church instructs us to come to mass each and every Sunday and to receive the Holy Eucharist as frequently as we can. It is also a time for us to

think about how we approach the Eucharist in the Communion procession. Are we reverent and focused? Do we have our hands flatly positioned to receive, not take, the Eucharistic host? Do we step aside to place the host in our mouths rather than walking away with the sacred species in our hands? THIS YEAR the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey in the Ecclesiastical Province of Newark will; be lifting the dispensation for Catholics attending Sunday Mass. The obligation will be re-instated beginning next Sunday. Those with serious health issues or the homebound are exempt from the obligation as is our catholic church practice.

We also honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a special way this month. May we learn mercy and compassion through our prayerful devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We honor the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul later in the month. They remind us of our mission to reach out to all and share the Gospel in word and deed.

There is a lot happening around our parish these days. Master Calendar preparations are underway for 2021-22; Capital Budget items are being identified; FYE 2022 Budget is close to being finalized; Staff Salary proposals are being reviewed; Preparations for Summer Religious Education Classes; Thank you for all that you are doing to enable our parish to serve the needs in our community. Many thanks to all those who have made a gift or pledge to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal. Thank you for the sacrifices that you make so that the vibrancy of this community continues to support the efforts of the larger diocesan church and our Most Reverend Bishop.

As soon as we receive guidance regarding the facial mask mandate for those who have been fully vaccinated we will let you know. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Have a great week.

Memorial Day Parade On Monday, May 31, the Township of Colts Neck will commemorate Memorial Day with its annual Memorial Day Parade and following Ceremony at Memorial Park. The parade and ceremony combines as one of the highlights of the year, when our Colts Neck Community gathers to pay tribute to those military personals who died while on active duty. The parade begins at 10:30 am at Township Hall, 124 Cedar Drive and concludes at Memorial Park, 242 Heyers Mill Road.

There will be opportunities for youngsters to march with Colts Neck Sport Foundation teams along with other township sports organizations as well as the Daisey’s, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts or ride on a decorated bicycle after the decorated bicycle contest held at Town Hall at 10:00 am .
