ST. MARY PARISH 50th ANNIVERSARY Sunday June 5, 2022—Pentecost Sunday Join the celebration as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Parish of St. Mary. Reconnect with old friends and make new ones as we gather for faith, food, fun, music and our St. Mary family.

3 PM Solemn Mass presided by the Most Reverend David O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton (this will be the only Mass on June 5th) Mass will be followed by an outdoor festival with food trucks and attractions for young and young at heart. We will have music throughout the afternoon.

Be sure to bring your own chairs or a blanket.

Ticket sale for the festival has finished. NO TICKETS SOLD AT THE DOOR. Wristbands will be distributed beginning this weekend to those who have purchased their tickets. Wristbands must be worn on June 5 to be able to get food at food trucks.

Memorial Day In the United States, the last Monday of May is designated Memorial Day, a federal holiday which is set aside for remembrance of those who have died while serving our country in the many branches of the armed forces. The meaning of this day is often confused with Veterans’ Day in November, which honors ALL veterans, living and deceased. This is also often obfuscated by the parades, BBQ lunches, pool parties and other festivities that mark the unofficial start of summer.

As it is such both a day of remembrance and of celebration, an interesting note about the flag of the United States on this day: The flag is to be raised to the top of the staff as always, but then immediately lowered to half-staff until noon. Then, it is raised again for the remainder of the day.

While not an officially observed remembrance in the Universal Church, the Catholic dioceses in the United States often recommend that Masses on this day be celebrated with the people, remembering those who gave their lives in service of the United States. Catholics and all Christians and citizens are encouraged to engage in the practice of the visiting of cemeteries or monuments to pay respects to fallen soldiers on this day, or at least during the month of May.

Saint of the Week: Brendan, Abbot, c. 484-577

“Easter Duty” The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5-6, 2022 to Trinity Sunday, June 12, 2022. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

Brendan is a very popular Irish saint about whom little is known outside of legend. He was probably born near Tralee in Kerry, Ireland. When he was six, he was sent to a monastic school in Tuam for his education.

He was ordained in 512 by Bishop St. Erc. Brendan founded many monasteries in Ireland. The most famous of these, Clonfort, was a center of missionary activity for many centuries. Some three thousand monks lived, worked, studied, and prayed there under his direction.

Brendan made many missionary journeys by small sailing boat (a curragh) around Ireland and to England, Scotland and Wales, but his most famous journey, lasting from five to seven years, was to the Land of Promise.

This change has been made permanently by the Metropolitan Province of Newark. This includes the transfer of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord for both Saturday Vigil Mass, Sunday Masses of the Day and the Liturgy of Hours.

Father Gene, a Roman Catholic Chaplain for the New Jersey National Guard, has resided in Colts Neck for the past 17 months. During that time he has generously offered to assist the four parishes within Cohort 13 (Saint Gabriel, Marlboro; Saint Catherine of Genoa, Holmdel; Saint Leo the Great, Lincroft and Saint Mary, Colts Neck) as needed. Father Gene has received a new post from his military superiors within the US Army Chaplain Corp continuing to serve in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Military Services. He is to report to Fort Hood Texas on 10 June 2022.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This solemnity plays between absence and presence. There is also an experience of the not yet of heaven and the already of resurrection. When we witness to our faith we are the present day disciples who make Jesus Christ present in our day as we wait or anticipate that which is to come in heaven. The Solemnity of the Ascension challenges us to look at this time to that of Christ in Glory.

Therefore, absence and presence are more than Jesus’ ascending and the sending of the Paraclete. They remind us that our suffering and rising, our repenting and forgiving, preaching, witnessing and blessing carry us forward in this world. Hope in that which is to come is the hallmark of Christian Discipleship.

Knights of Columbus Council 6392 50th Anniversary

Did you know ….

The causes of falls in the elderly include such things as muscle weakness, poor balance and vision, lack of confidence at moving about, and the effect of medication, walking on uneven ground, over-reaching, or over stepping.

Tai Chi is a low impact, weight bearing exercise; and with regular Tai Chi practice, it helps build internal strength, reduce falls, and improve the quality of life.

Barbara Schaflin, certified instructor of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention; Diabetes; Memory; and Rehabilitation/Rejuvenation, has taught 103 participants this past year in the various disciplines. Beginner and Advanced Classes are offered Thursday mornings, in the Northax (Gathering Space) 10:0010:45; 11:00-12 Noon respectively.

Catholic Charities News

Eight months have passed since Catholic Charities Trenton appealed to parishes for donations to aid the 13,000 Afghan refugees housed at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Since then, our donors and parishioners have contributed over $100,000 used to create recreational centers, theatres, barber shops and salons as well as supply medical needs like glasses and wheelchairs. Additionally, the community rallied with donations of clothes, games and toys delivered directly to the base. A big thank you to everyone who helped sustain these refugees who fled their country with only the clothes on their back.

Approximately 500 of our Afghan guests have now settled in NJ. The others have relocated through resettlement centers around the country.

Catholic Charities provides assistance with food, housing, crises counseling, drug addiction, domestic violence, and immigration services. If you know a parishioner needing help, please contact us at

Chesterton, shows that the fundamental disposition of genuine holiness and effective evangelism is joy, and life in Christ is a day -to-day encounter with an abundant and surprising offer of grace. GOD’S EVER-PRESENT LOVE IN MOTION Wednesday, June 8 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM We all yearn to be aware of the presence of God in our daily lives, no matter where we are or what we are doing. If you find yourself sliding down “the greasy pole” of desolation or negative thinking, this day will help you immensely. The Ignatian teaching on discernment is life-changing as we practice awareness, understanding and right action regarding the various spirits that present themselves to us day by day and moment by moment. This month’s speaker is Jeannie Vandervoort a child of God, born in Brooklyn she came to be a Jersey girl in 1992. Blessed to be a parishioner at St. Veronica in Howell. Jeannie is part of the Joyful Praise worship group that leads praise there at the noon mass on Sunday. With four of her sisters in faith she writes a weekly meditation for the Kingdom Fire Starters ministry. Jeannie has been an elementary school teacher for 35 years and loves her job. Working with children is the greatest job in the world!
