These are the four main types of music that are congregational sung during Mass. There are also motets and other choral styles that are offered by the choir on certain occasions.
Chants - the official music of the Roman Catholic church. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal:
appropriately sung at various times of the year. Two very common canticles are the Canticle of Mary, otherwise known as the Magnificat (My soul doth magnify the Lord…) and is sung during vespers, and some dates throughout the church year, and the Nunc dimittis (Lord, let your servant go in peace) also sung at several offices and on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
Hymns - the most common form of musical worship today. Most hymns are written in a 4-part structure, wherein many of the melodic lines repeat themselves in the course of a verse, which lends to them being quickly learned. Almost all hymns are also harmonized for 4-part choir. The text of hymns are generally paraphrased from various scriptural sources, but may also be completely original text or a combination of both.
Songs - the most modern form of music found in the church, many songs are written in a 1960s era folk style, favoring guitar and keyboard instruments rather than organ, and are not always written with congregational or choral singing in mind. The texts of many songs reflect the thoughts and feelings of the composer and do not as frequently borrow from sacred sources as the other styles of compositions. Still, there are times when these songs are appropriate for use during Mass or other occasions of corporate worship.

Canticles - songs from the bible. These are taken directly from scripture and
READINGS FOR THE WEEK
Chants are monophonic (one-voice, that is, without harmony) and taken directly from the Missal. In our modern age, many composers have added organ accompaniments to the chants, or added choral harmony to the original chanted line.

The main place should be given, all things being equal, to Gregorian chant, as being proper to the Roman Liturgy.

To the parents of our Confirmandi: We have received notification that His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation here at the Parish of St. Mary on Friday, October 19, at 4 pm. More specific information will be conveyed once that day draws near. You have already been notified about the Confirmation interviews that will take place next month. Prior to Confirmation, there will also be a Confirmation retreat, and at least one rehearsal for the ceremony. Dates for those events will be communicated soon.
To all the 8th grade Confirmation candidates: Confirmation interviews will be done according to the following schedule: Students with last names beginning in A-E on Sunday, June 3, between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. Students with last names beginning in F-K on Sunday, June 10, between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. Students with last names beginning in L-Z on Monday, June 11, between 6 and 8 pm. Students missing their allotted time must come on Tuesday, June 12 at 6:00 pm. A successful interview is only one of the prerequisites for advancing to Confirmation. If a student performs less than satisfactorily on their interview, a make-up interview will need to be scheduled with me. Completion of the service hours as well as attendance at our year's Sunday sessions, and attending the Confirmation retreat in the fall also are parts of the program requirements. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of The Most Holy Trinity. Liturgy does for us what the Deuteronomy texts did for Israel of old: helps us remember God’s mighty deeds and enter into a covenantal relationship with the Divine. Liturgy calls us to gather to ask, “Who is this God?” Knowing God is not something we can find out in the abstract; knowing God is dependent concretely on our doing—in taking up Christ’s mission and living our own privileged identity as daughters and sons of God “until the end of the age.” Without doing as Jesus did, we cannot answer “Who is God?” This doing is nothing less than to “suffer with” Christ (second reading), which means a constant dying to self. By our own self-emptying are we filled with the divine identity. The Solemnity of Pentecost was a wonderful experience this year. Thanks to all those who wore some article of clothing that was red. This helped us to decorate the Church building. Join us for Mass on Monday at 9:00 am in the Church as we observe the Civic Memorial Holiday. This is a wonderful way to pray for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Next Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The Eucharist is the center of our life as Roman Catholic Christians. It is the Eucharist that makes the Church and it is the Church that makes the Eucharist. Everything we do and who we are flows from the Eucharist. That is why the Church instructs us to come to Mass each and every Sunday and to receive the Holy Eucharist as frequently as we can. We also honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus in a special way this month. May we learn mercy and compassion
through our prayerful devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This past week our Pastor Emeritus, Father Bill Bausch, was with us to celebrate the daily Mass on Wednesday. It is always good to have Father Bausch here in our parish where he faithfully served for nearly 23 years as pastor. He has been a retired priest of our Diocese of Trenton for 23 years now keeping a hectic schedule helping local parishes and publishing articles and books. Father Bausch will be with us on Sunday, 24 June to celebrate the 8 am Mass and join us for the Agape in the Parish Hall. During the Agape he will have some of his published work available for purchase (and his signature). Please spread the word as so many of our long term parishioners recall Father Bausch with great fondness. There is a lot happening around our parish these days. Master Calendar preparation is nearly completed for 2018-19; Capital Budget items are being identified; FYE 2019 Budget is close to being finalized; Staff Salary proposals are being reviewed; and Preparations for Summer Religious Education Classes. Thank you for all that you are doing to enable our parish to serve the needs in our community. Many thanks to all those who have made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. Thanks also to those who continue to make pledge payments toward our parish goal for the Faith To Move Mountains Diocesan Capital Campaign. Thank you for the sacrifices that you make so that the vibrancy of this community continues to support the efforts of the larger diocesan church and our Most Reverend Bishop. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

THANK YOU for the Sacrificial Stewardship Offerings as we support the ministries, programs and facilities of our parish.
During the month of May, our students were asked to help plant flowers in the urns near the entrance to the Spiritual Center. As we all know, young children love to play and get their hands dirty. They had such a wonderful time digging in the soil to plant the flowers. Our children would like to thank Linda DickinsonPancila for including our students in this project. They had a great time helping and can’t wait to do it again next year!
Frequently Asked Questions about ACA: I give to my parish, why should I give to the Annual Catholic Appeal? Your support of your parish is very important. It is also important to support the Diocese of Trenton for programs that provide valuable ministerial resources for the parish and diocesan programs that support services for the poor, food for the hungry, and education for our children in the faith. Together, we can do more than any one parish can do alone. Pledge cards are available on the credenzas in the back of the Church and at the Parish Office

Memorial Day Weekend Message from Bishop David O'Connell In Monmouth and Ocean counties this Memorial Day Weekend, we are all encouraged to love one another as we celebrate the sacrifices made for our freedoms. At a time when division and polarization and prejudice seem to taint our society anew, we need to look deeply into our hearts again to renew our commitment to the freedoms that are ours to own and to share together as neighbors. Hatred and discrimination based on race or religion, national origin or culture or whatever distinguishes us from one another throughout this great land, are the antithesis of our national heritage and our national motto “E pluribus, unum ... out of many, one. They are also the antithesis of the cause of freedom for which those brave women and men whose memory we honor this weekend sacrificed and laid down their lives. Let us pray for peace in
