Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Ascension of the Lord is the 40th day of the Easter Season, and as such falls on a Thursday. In all US ecclesiastical provinces, except Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia, the celebrations of the Ascension had been transferred to the 7th Sunday of Easter. In 2021, many local bishops approved the temporary transfer to this Sunday. In 2022, the province of Newark has made permanent the transference of the Solemnity, replacing the 7th Sunday of Easter. This solemnity commemorates Jesus’ ascension into heaven, an important tenet of our Catholic Christian faith, professed in both the Apostle’s Creed and the NicenoConstantinopolitan Creed. The Ascension event is a key component of our understanding of the post-Easter narratives and the concept of the holy trinity. This event is the return of the Son to the Father which precedes the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles 10 days later. Another key theological aspect ties into the resurrection - Jesus was resurrected by the will of the Father and through His power, but Jesus ascends by his own will and power, the final earthly manifestation of his might and glory.
Saint of the Week: Achilleus and Nereus, Martyrs, c. First Century
“Easter Duty” The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5-6, 2022 to Trinity Sunday, June 12, 2022. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.
As with many of the early martyrs, little is known with certainty about these two saints and many of the accounts are conflicting. What is not disputed is the site of their graves, the catacomb of Domitilla in Rome. But, with that as a starting point, we can surmise the most likely history of their martyrdom. Persecution of Christians occurred over much of the first three centuries of the Church; however none of the early harassment matched that which began with the ascension of Trajan to Emperor in 98 A.D. An elite unit assigned to the emperor was charged with hunting down Christians and killing those who would not apostatize. Achilleus and Nereus were members of this unit. Read more HERE.

Fr. William Bausch, Pastor of St. Mary Parish for twenty-seven years, thought we might enjoy sharing the memories, photos he had put on a disc of the “classes” of years ago… some of those “students” are still parishioners today, some have moved away, and some have gone to Heaven. However, many of their children are still actively involved. ALL ARE INVITED TO COME TO A SHOWING OF THE PHOTOS. This will take place in Madonna Hall at 2:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, May 22nd. Refreshments will be served and lots of good conversation will be shared. Please join us and invite others who may enjoy meeting fellow parishioners, past and present.

Wednesday, March 11, was a "Fun Day" for the Martha Mary Guild - thanks to the outstanding planning by Vice President, Rorie Coppola. After lunch, which featured many delicious, homemade desserts, Meredith Geneve sang bits of songs from the 50's to the 80's, and those who remembered the lyrics sang along. Then we played an interesting variety of Bingo games, which came with many great prizes. Everyone was a winner at this meeting because there were grab bags of goodies for all. Collier School was also a "winner", due to the wonderful generosity of the Guild members. Pictured below are items for the Collier Summer Camp. What a fun way to end the 20212022 meetings!

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Living the paschal mystery is as demanding as loving with the same selfsacrifice as Jesus and as easy as responding to God’s indwelling as an intimate Friend who is always with us, never forsakes us, and at all times is there for us with care and strength. These Sundays before Pentecost when we celebrate the gift of the Spirit are so important for our daily Christian living: they remind us that as disciples we never have to feel like the whole task of living the gospel falls on our shoulders alone. God is always present, dwelling within us, to give us the strength we need to be faithful to Jesus’ commands. Only in this way can our everyday lives be fruitful, can we keep Jesus’ word as our own word. This week we will celebrate the 40th Day of Easter commemorating the Ascension of the Lord into Heaven. This mystery of our faith should occupy a place in our reflection these days since the Lord promised us that he would be with us always. The ascension reminds us of the important outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. While the Lord returned to God in Heaven, the Spirit has been sent to empower us for ministry and in building up the Church. The Bishops of our Province of Newark have, following broad consultation, followed many other provinces throughout the United States in transferring the observance of this solemnity to the Seventh Sunday of the Easter Season, the weekend prior to the Solemnity of Pentecost. Pentecost is the 50th Day of Easter and we will chant the dismissal with the double alle-
luias at the conclusion of our Sunday Masses. Remember that there will be a special mass schedule this year for the Solemnity of Pentecost as we observe the 50th Anniversary of our Parish. The Masses will be Saturday, 4 June at 5:00pm; Sunday, 5 June at 3:00pm followed by the parish picnic. Check other sections of the bulletin for further details. Next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend. We will observe our abbreviated mass schedule Saturday, 5pm; Sunday 10am. Mass on Monday will be at 9am. Also, for the many new residents of Colts Neck there is a very nice Memorial Day Parade on Memorial Day beginning at Town Hall up Heyers Mill Road concluding at the Fire House #2 on Conover Road. It is a wonderful custom and very representative of life in a small town where so many people know one another. It is also important that we honor those women and men who have made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom that we enjoy. Make time in your personal schedule to participate in the mass and parade this Memorial Day. We will publish an overview of our 2022 Easter collection as the liturgical season ends. Thank you for your generous sharing. We continue to make progress toward our goal for the 2022 Annual Catholic Appeal… Together we can make our goal and demonstrate our commitment to our parish, our diocese and our catholic church. I ask that you prayerfully consider your gift and make it either on-line or by completing the cards located in the narthex of the church. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
