Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:
Question for Children: Jesus helps us be strong in our faith. When do you need to be really strong in faith?
Question for Youth: Prayer is essential to being a disciple, because it is the way we build or relationship with God through talking and listening. What is one way you can take more time this week to listen to God in prayer?
Question for Adults: In these heartfelt instructions from a leader of the church, what are the ways in modern life that we sometimes suffer for our faith? Or are there no such ways?
The Sanctuary Lamp this week is burning for:

Mary, Mother of the Church
On February 11, 2018, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments inscribed a new obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, into the General Roman Calendar (the calendar of observances that we follow in the United States). This memorial is celebrated every year on the Monday after Pentecost (which in 2023 is also Memorial Day)
The title of Mother of the Church has been bestowed on the Blessed Virgin Mary because she gave birth to Christ, the Head of the Church, and became Mother of the redeemed before her Son gave up his spirit on the Cross. Pope Saint Paul VI solemnly confirmed the same title in an address given to the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council on November 21, 1964 and established that "by this sweetest of names the whole Christian people should henceforth give still greater honor to the Mother of God.”
“Just as the Divine Motherhood is the basis both for Mary's unique relationship with Christ and for her presence in the work of human salvation accomplished by Christ Jesus, so likewise, it is principally from the Divine Motherhood that the relationships which exist between Mary and the Church flow. Mary is indeed the Mother of Christ who, at the moment he assumed human nature in her virginal womb, joined to himself, as Head, his Mystical Body, which is the Church. Mary, therefore, as Mother of Christ, must also be regarded as Mother of all the faithful and Pastors alike, that is to say, of the Church.”

Saint of the Week:
Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs, d. 1886
Charles Lwanga was the assistant to the master of pages in the court of King Mwanga of Uganda. Joseph Mukasa, a Catholic, was his superior. Mukasa chastised the king for his murder of a Protestant missionary, as well as for the king’s homosexuality and his corruption of the young pages. This served to intensify the king’s hatred of Catholics and Joseph Mukasa was ordered slain by the king. Charles, having been under instruction in the Catholic faith, asked for and received Baptism on the day that Mukasa was killed. For his own unwillingness to submit to immoral acts and his defense of the other pages, Lwanga and fourteen other pages who were Christian were sent to a prison. Read more HERE.
“Easter Duty”
The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year often called “Easter duty” for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 26, 2023 to Trinity Sunday, June 4, 2023. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Our Church teaches that the Lord Jesus, after having been raised from the dead, ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of the almighty God. Our society glorifies being our own person and doing all we can to make our lives easy. This gospel and second reading make clear that to live the paschal mystery—continue Jesus’ work— means that we must remain in Jesus even to the point of taking up his suffering. Jesus’ prayer, then, doesn’t make our lives easier, but harder! It’s the share in glory that makes the choice to be a faithful disciple living the paschal mystery worthwhile.
Let us also congratulate our graduates. Having completed their studies they are being challenged to begin a new chapter in their life. With that comes the uncertainty of what they will encounter in their journey. The community of faith can be a wonderful place to gain that necessary support that is needed during life’s transitions. May we, filled with God’s grace, be a people of hope and encouragement. There are lots of voices out there attempting to bring us down or distract us from our mission. Stay focused and remember why we are here: to build the Body of Christ in our midst.
Also, please register or re-register for religious education and sacramental preparation opportunities for the coming fall. We
want to provide the very best for our parishioner families. This requires preparation and planning.
We have been treated to some beautiful Spring Weather. Take time to enjoy it with a walk…some gardening…or simply sitting outside and catching up on some meditation or spiritual reading. Our parish team continues to be busy planning for the coming fiscal and liturgical years. I am grateful to all those who advise us in our exercise of oversight. Remember to join with us Saturday, 10 June at 5:00pm and celebrate with Father Mike the 50th Anniversary of his Priestly Ordination. Also, register for the Theology on Tap evening scheduled for 13 June at the Source here in Colts Neck
Next weekend we will celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, the fulfillment of the New Covenant in the sending of the Holy Spirit to continue the ministry of Christ’s Church. Don’t forget to wear something RED next weekend when you come to celebrate mass! We will observe the “Abbreviated Mass Schedule” which is Saturday at 5pm; Sunday at 10am. The Saturday anticipated mass will be at 5pm until and including Labor Day weekend. Next Monday is Memorial Day. Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel at 9am. Come, let us pray for all those who have made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom that we enjoy. Have a great week! Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
