Easter is a season. As such, there is much opportunity for repeated musical selections to add to the unified feel of the season. Conversely, much like Christmas carols, there are an abundance of Easter hymns appropriate to the season! So it is here that we enter into a dilemma: do we keep repeating certain hymns and songs or do we take advantage of the rich repertoire of Easter hymns? Why not both? For the octave day of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday), you may have noticed a repeat of the hymns. Going forward from the 3rd Sunday, you will find a variety of hymns and songs for a few weeks. As we get closer to the Ascension and Pentecost, we will use a very well known hymn for several weeks, “Hail Thee Festival Day”, appropriate for the season of Easter, as well as Ascension and Pentecost. And speaking of singing: the choir is always in need of more members. There can never be such a thing as too large a choir in a church! Come join one of the most active ministries in our parish and help add to the beauty of our worship.

Message from Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton: Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C. M. I have been informed that a group of women calling themselves “Sisters of Mary Queen of the Third Millennium” have been circulating in the parishes of the Diocese seeking support from our parishioners. They are dressed in medieval habits and people have given them money. Please be advised: 1. There is no such canonical order; 2. They have no permission whatsoever to solicit funds; 3. Please do not permit them to advertise or do anything on Church property. This is a scam. I will advise the Nuncio and the USCCB. Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C. M.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter. Most of our reflections on the paschal mystery revolve around reminders that being plunged into the dying and rising mystery of Christ through our baptism means we must die to self if we wish to share in Jesus’ eternal life. We look for ordinary opportunities in our daily living to die to self and thus transform what appears to be ordinary human actions, into extensions of the ministry of the Good Shepherd himself. For example, comforting the sick and dying isn’t simply a caring human action; in the context of our baptismal commitment, it is an expression of Jesus’ love for us and the dignity of the other as members of the body of Christ. This is true and surely the heart of the mystery. This Sunday, however, we might turn this around and rest a bit in what the Good Shepherd offers us when we live the paschal mystery: eternal life, the assurance that we will never perish. For all our efforts at dying to self, they do not equal the gift of self that Jesus gives us. Sometimes we are so caught up in the effort of dying that we do forget that new life is already within us and among us. This is a good Sunday to bask in Jesus’ care and protection, listen to his voice calling us to his loving, embracing hands, and rejoice in the goodness showered upon us who are faithful to his call. This, too, is living the paschal mystery. Last week I completed my first six-year term as Pastor (8 May) of this venerable community; this coming week I will complete twenty seven years of priestly ministry (16 May). I am grateful to almighty God for the many and varied blessings bestowed upon me. Some of these blessings were immediately
recognizable while others became recognizable over time. Regardless, God has continued to sustain me especially through those who I collaborate with as a priest. The readings and images of the Easter Season help us to reflect on the actions and choices of Jesus’ earliest followers as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. Time and time again we, like those early disciples, are called to walk the walk. It is not enough for us to pay lip service to what we believe and acknowledge to be true. Take time during this Spring Season to reflect on the great gift of faith that we have received, pondering how we might effectively share it with those around us. This is the fruit of our Lenten Discipline when we acknowledge our excesses and have them washed away through Sacramental Penance & Reconciliation as we prepared for the renewal of our Baptismal Promises on Easter Sunday. Throughout the Easter Season, the rubrics of the Roman Missal suggest that the faithful may make the Profession of Faith each Sunday by reciting the Apostle’s Creed. In our parish we observe this custom throughout the Easter Season. This weekend we welcome parishioner families who present their children for their First Holy Communion. May the Eucharist be the central act of our parish community from which all other ministries and activities flow. Many thanks to all those who have helped to prepare these children, especially their parents, godparents, and grandparents as well as their catechetical leaders. We will soon publish the 2019 Easter Collection Report. If you have not made your gift, please do so today. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in our prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
