Stations of the Cross The Way of the Cross has its roots in the early centuries of the Church as pilgrims would walk the Via Dolorosa (the way of sorrows) in Jerusalem, tracing the route Jesus would have taken from his trial to his crucifixion. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Franciscans in Europe began to build outdoor shrines to duplicate the experience found in the Holy Land.

While the number of stations has varied widely (as few and 7 and as many as 30) the tradition of saying prayers and chanting at each station has continued through the centuries, and eventually the 14 stations we know today came into fashion. There were still variations, and in response to this, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted the Scriptural Way of the Cross in 1991 as a means of unifying (at the very least) the events which each station depicted.

Some communities pray a 15th station, depicting the resurrection, but this is contrary to the underlying message of the stations, to meditate on the suffering of Christ and his sacrifice for our sins.

In the Roman Catholic Church, the devotion may be conducted personally by the faithful, making their way from one station to another and saying the prayers, or by having an officiating celebrant move from cross to cross while the faithful make the responses.

There are several published versions of the way of the cross, and we have some available in the chapel on the side altar for your use during Lent. While the stations may be prayed at any time, Friday is considered the penitential day and when they are prayed most often, especially the Fridays of Lent.

Saint of the Week: Jerome Emiliani, Religious, 1481-1537 Jerome was born in Venice and became a soldier for that city-state. As commander of the League of Cambrai forces at Castelnuevo, Jerome was captured and imprisoned when that outpost town fell in battle. He spent the time in prison thinking about his life and learning how to pray. Jerome escape from prison, and returned to Venice where he began his studies for the priesthood to which he was ordained in 1518.

The years which followed saw much plague and famine in Europe. While aiding the victims of this pestilence, Jerome became especially affected by the condition of orphans and decided to devote himself to helping them. He founded several orphanages and a hospital. Around 1532, Jerome and two other priests founded a congregation which became known as the Clerks Regular of Somascha (named after the town in which their first house was established).

Citing the Generosity of Martha Mary Guild Members Each month, the Guild collects items for various worthwhile donations. In December, it was for Birthright and the amount of new items is so overwhelming that we wanted to share it with the rest of the parish. 16th Synod of Bishops Listening Sessions Pope Francis has given all Catholics an opportunity to take part in Synod listening sessions in preparation for the 2023 Synod of Bishops. Small groups will meet to share their joys and consolations as well as their hurts and challenges experienced in the Church. This feedback will be shared with the bishop who will send it to the US Catholic Bishops.

Listening sessions will be on Sunday March 13 at 11 AM and Tuesday March 15 at 4:30 PM in Madonna Hall. We are asking for up to 90 minutes of your time to share your thoughts and provide this necessary feedback. Imagine being abandoned simply because you’re old— er. That’s what happened to Rex, a 14-year-old Pekingese from New York City, whose owners abandoned him on the streets one day after deeming him too much of a burden. Fortunately for Rex, a concerned pet lover, animal rescuer and Marty’s Place Senior Dog Sanctuary all came to his rescue.

“So many dogs like Rex are simply cast away when they reach their senior years,” said Doreen Jakubcak, founder and executive director of Marty’s Place. “We were happy to take Rex in and give him a second chance at life”.

At Marty’s Place, located in Upper Freehold Township, NJ, senior dogs, 7 years of age or older, receive physical comfort, emotional care and enrichment in a safe, loving and protected environment. Each dog has ample living space, human and canine companionship, consistent medical and dental care, and access to physically and mentally stimulating activities suited to their age and abilities.

Senior dogs come to Marty’s Place for various reasons, including: Relocation or displacement; medical issues or transition to a long-term care facility; financial challenges; estate planning provisions.

The Vision of Marty’s Place is to enhance the lives of senior dogs by committing to a forever home in our sanctuary. Even though up in age, they still like sitting by a lake, greeting those they meet, and engaging with any dog that would come their way.

On Wednesday 9 March 2022, Doreen Jakubeck, founder and executive director of Marty’s Place will be our vibrant guest speaker who will share this remarkable story.

Every month, the Guild collects items for various organizations. This month the following items will be collected for Marty’s Place: Swiffer wet jet pads and solution refill bottles, extra-large or giant size training pads. They already have a good supply of toys/treats/blankets.

Please note that the rosary is prayed in the “former chapel’ at 11:30 a.m. This is a lovely tradition that the Guild established several years ago and we look forward to many participants.

BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) is at noon, and the program will begin around 12:30.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent.

The ritual act of professing our faith is no substitution for living it in our daily lives. When we are tested our faith is put to the test, too, and we are faced with a choice of how we live. Lent is a time to examine our choices. Just as God led Israel to a “land flowing with milk and honey” (first reading), so will God lead us to salvation if we “call on the name of the Lord” (second reading). For us, though, our desert is the demands of everyday living and our salvation is found on the cross.

Each day we take up our cross and lay down our life for the sake of others, we are building strength to resist temptation and come to greater faith. Our simple acts of kindness are helping us resist temptation. Our complimenting another, offering a word of encouragement help us resist temptation. We don’t have to go out into a desert to find temptation! But we do need God’s nearness to resist it. And that God has promised us.

The liturgical Season of Lent has begun and concludes Holy Thursday at which time the Solemn Triduum (Three Days) begins. Lent is a time for us to give up or do without some things in our lives…to search for simpler living. It is also a time for us to do some things extra like daily Mass, the Way of the Cross, Eucharistic Adoration, Scripture Reading, taking more quality time when praying. Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving are the important Lenten practices for the individual Christian and the Christian Community. I encourage you, regardless of age, to seriously make an effort to abstain from something and also to commit yourself to doing something extra especially during this great season of grace. The daily mass is celebrated in our parish as announced in the Parish Bulletin (9:00am Monday – Friday) in the Chapel. This is a time that seems to be convenient for many…it is during the morning when it is bright out. Come and draw near to the Lord who is present to us in the Eucharist.

Lenten liturgy is characterized by a bit more sobriety in our communal worship The music is less grand…we exit in reverential silence. The vestment colors are violet (not purple) with more red tones than blue tones which is more appropriate for Advent, Rose for Laetare Sunday, Red for Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. White is prescribed for Solemnities and Feasts during Lent. The Glory to God is omitted for Sundays (this makes Introductory Rites very brief so plan to arrive by 5 before the hour). The Gospel Acclamation and in fact all spoken and sung words avoid the Alleluia. We refrain from the Celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism and Weddings since our numbers do not warrant a genuine pastoral need.

Several weeks ago we hosted a quarterly “new parishioner orientation” for those who are seeking to become members of our parish. This orientation is an important part of getting to know these new parishioner families while sharing a little about our parish and the expectations of being a bona fide member of the parish. There continues to be a number of homes for sale in our 07722 community. I encourage you…our parishioners…to welcome new members to our town and if they are Roman Catholic invite them to participate in our parish by registering. If they are not Roman Catholic, share with them the other two Christian Churches in town…The Reformed Church and the Community Church.

To those who have already participated in the 2022 Annual Catholic Appeal…Thank you. To those who have not, please do so this coming week. We will have a report in the coming weeks and will share it with you. CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY – FAIR HAVEN DIVORCED AND SEPARATED MINISTRY Church of the Nativity in Fair Haven is pleased to announce its continuing ministry for separated and divorced Catholics entitled, “Surviving Divorce: Hope and Healing for the Catholic Family”, a healing program being offered beginning on March 9, 2022 and continuing for twelve weeks on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm, ending on May 25, 2022.

The meetings will be held at Church of the Nativity, 180 Ridge Road, Fair Haven in the Library on the 2nd Floor of the Parish Office (entrance behind the Church building).
