5 Music Ministry David Maliakel Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org
Greetings all! Several parishioners have approached me and thanked me for providing these articles to greater enlighten their knowledge of church history and practices. I thank them and any of you reading these for taking the time to absorb these little nuggets of wisdom. During Lent, you may notice a much more reserved use of the organ. There are no preludes or postludes. The organ is played quietly to medium volume at most, as the sole purpose is to support the congregational singing and not to add any musical embellishments. The organ makes its triumphant return to full glory during the Gloria at the Easter Vigil. There are also no reeds or mixtures used, and if an organ contains any percussive sounds, like chimes or a zimbelstern, they are also not used. What are those? A quick lesson on different types of pipes found in an organ. • Principals and Flutes - Rounded or square pipes made of wood, tin, or other metals; the most common and plentiful pipe, produces the foundation of the organ sound. • Reeds - These stops imitate the sounds of the instrument assigned to them. They are fashioned to sound like a clarinet, a trumpet, a horn, etc… • Mixtures - Similar to the principals, although these use several different pipes to produce a pitch, resulting in rich overtones and a crystalline or piercing sound, depending on the intended function and coupling with other stops. (Keep in mind that in our parish, we do not have a pipe organ. We have a circa 1991 electronic organ which only approximates the sounds produced by a pipe organ.) So, as you can see from the list above, during Lent the organist will only utilize about 1/3 to 1/2 of the organ’s potential. This is to create a more contemplative atmosphere for musical prayer and to also make a marked shift in the liturgy as do the readings and the music chosen. Keep singing! Peace. Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship / Organist
The children’s choir is seeking new members to par cipate in our Easter Liturgy! Rehearsals will be Sundays, March 4th, 11th, & 18th, immediately following the Sunday 10:00 am Mass. For further informa on, please contact David Maliakel at Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. Most of us get lost in the demands of our everyday living. We get up in the morning, spend our day working, prepare and clean up after meals, shop and clean, drive the kids to soccer practice, worry about them, and do countless other things before we fall into bed at the end of the day—usually totally exhausted. In the midst of all this, it is pretty difficult to be single-minded about anything except the tasks at hand. Our longest-range goals are maybe saving a little money for a much-needed vacation; sometimes that dream trip is what keeps us going. This gospel dramatically challenges us to keep doing all these everyday tasks—but for the right reason: zeal for God. Ultimately, we are to offer up the temple of our own bodies for dying and rising. This is our daily dying: not necessarily doing something different, but doing what is demanded of us out of zeal for God and the good of others. This is our daily rising: that we have kept our sight on God and have believed the signs of God’s presence to us. This weekend is the final time for our Winter Mass Schedule. Next Weekend we return to the Saturday Evening 5:00 pm Mass and there will be no Sunday Evening 5:00 pm Mass. I am grateful to all who sacrificed for us to expand our services. I encourage our RE families to join with us for Sunday Mass each and every weekend. Next weekend we will host Chris Bray immediately following the Saturday Evening Mass for a great presentation and reflection. This is an awesome intergenerational opportunity for parishioners of
every age. Invite family members, friends or those who may have drifted from the Catholic Church. Please join us for daily Mass Monday through Friday in our Lenten Chapel. The Way of the Cross is prayed each Friday Evening in the Lenten Chapel. Enjoy the Black Books that were provided as well as the other material for your reflection. The kiosk in the gathering space has a lot of material for adults, children and families. Check it out. You should also be receiving the Holy Week and Easter Schedule in the mail. If you have not within the next two weeks or so, please contact the parish office. Make every effort to participate in the Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Services. Personal responsibility is key to continued growth in the spiritual life. One of the most basic ways we can prepare for Easter is by celebrating the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (confession). The Lenten Penance & Reconciliation Services are scheduled to be held Sunday, 18 March 2018. There will be 16 or so priest confessors to accommodate your needs. Please consult the bulletin for further details. Thanks to those who have acted in a responsible manner and made their commitment to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. We need every person to act responsibly in order to assist our diocesan bishop as he strives to pastor us and respond to the needs that exist in our four county diocese. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Evangelization - Ministry to Families, Youth and Young Adults Every person belongs to a family. Families are the founda on of the Catholic parish. In the midst of the family and the parish community, people encounter Christ and learn to be his disciples. Family and Parish are the primary environments in which evangeliza on takes place. Together in Mission is a tool to support these evangeliza on efforts. Your gi promotes individuals and family life. Youth events and service opportuni es, young adult gatherings, Marriage prep, Bap smal prep, Ministry to separated and divorced persons are just a few of the services offered. Our FTMM goal included 3 years ( 2016-2018) of the ACA. We encourage our parishioners—especially those who did not make a pledge to the FTMM — to support this year’s ACA and respond to Our Bishop’s call. Thank you for your generosity!
