Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following:

Ash Wednesday This coming week, we observe Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting, prayer, and penitence. There is an ancient tradition, in the times of the Old Testament, of people using ashes to express grief or sorrow for sins. Pope Gregory the Great is credited for starting the custom of imposing ashes on penitents in the 6th century.

In the time before the second Second Vatican Council, ashes were usually sprinkled on the crown of the heads of men, while women (who had their heads covered in church) received ashes on their forehead. This later custom soon became the norm in most English-speaking countries, although in some parts of the world, the former is still common.

The ashes used on Ash Wednesday, come from burning the palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday services, and are mixed with olive oil to provide a thicker consistency.

The imposition of ashes is a sacramental of the church. Sacramentals are sacred signs which signify effects of a spiritual nature, obtained through the intercession of the Church [Sacrosanctum Concilium]. While the bearer of ashes need not have them remain on their forehead throughout the entire day, many do, as an outward profession of faith.

The right hand page is a walk through Luke’s Passion narrative, a few verses at a time, with explanations and reflections along the way. How is the Easter Vigil Mass time selected?

The Vigil, by its very nature, "ought to take place at night". It is not begun before nightfall.

Therefore approximately if the placement of Easter is before April 1st then the Vigil can be celebrated as early as 7 pm, between April 1 -15 7:30 pm, and after April 15th at 8 pm.

The weekend of the Second Sunday of Easter, April 27 & 28 will have the Saturday Mass at 5:00 pm and Penance & Reconciliation at 4 pm. This Saturday schedule will continue until Oct 2019.

An abbreviated Sunday Mass schedule will be implemented during holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Fourth Sunday of Advent, and Holy Family, where the only Sunday Mass will be 10 am. This is due to the availability of Liturgical Ministers and seasonal vacations.

Parents of all children receiving their First Communion in May We will have a First Communion Retreat on Sunday, March 10, from 2-3:30 in Madonna Hall. We would like to have all the children who will be receiving their First Communion in May attend along with at least one parent. The First Communion banners for each child will be distributed and (hopefully) completed during our time together. In addition, the children will be instructed in the proper reception of the Sacrament, and they will have an opportunity to practice with unconsecrated hosts. This also counts as an intergenerational event. See you all there.

Summer RE Registration ends March 31 @ 12 noon Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the exception of first graders). However, all families must be registered active ("bona fide") parishioners for 1 year prior to enrolling.

Summer Intensive classes are for students entering grades 1-6 September 2019.

Classes run Monday through Friday for 2 weeks from 8:30 am -12:30 pm. Admission is on a first come first serve basis. Classes closed when they fill. We encourage you to register early.

Summer Intensive 1 : July 22 – 26 & 29 – August 2 Summer Intensive 2 : August 12 – 16 & 19 - 23 Summer Tuition remains same as last year, $300 per student & ends on March 31, 2019 at 12 noon.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. By our Baptism we are plunged into the dying and rising of Jesus Christ. Our identity is rooted in Jesus Christ. Like Christ throughout the Gospel narrative we are on our paschal journey…one that leads us through death to life. So we can say that although we enjoy human life as Christians, we have not yet achieved life…that is eternal life. Our journey throughout our time in this life enables us to continue to grow into our Christian Identity. Our choices can produce good fruit and as such we participate in the saving work of Jesus. Dying and rising is part of each and everyday of our lives. May we continue to die to sin and distraction so that we might rise to God’s grace and eternal life.

The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway.

I am grateful to all of you for your continued generous support of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton and the important work of our diocese. Thank you to those who have completed and returned the pledge cards distributed last weekend. Those who have not, please do so this coming week. I am grateful to Dr. Janet Munger and Suzanne Grabowski for coordinating this effort with Edwin Sevillano from our parish staff. Together we can make a difference.

Sunday, 3 March 2019 marks the completion of 90 years of life for our distinguished Pastor Emeritus Father Bausch. Let us continue to pray for him and to thank God for the gift he has been to our parish throughout his years of priestly ministry. Monday, 4 March is the birthday of Sister Helen Clifton, SSJ who had served our parish faithfully until her retirement a

few years ago. I am sure that Sister Helen would enjoy hearing from you and receive birthday wishes. May God continue to bless these two servants of the church.

The Universal Church observes Ash Wednesday this coming week. Ashes will be imposed at various times throughout the day. Consult the bulletin for the schedule as well as the guidelines for Lent 2019 issued by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton. The Stations of the Cross will be prayed each Friday evening and Daily Mass will be celebrated Monday-Friday at 9:00 am throughout the Lenten Season in the Lenten Chapel. Take time out of your busy schedule to participate in the celebration of Mass more frequently during the Season of Lent. The Little Black Books will be available during the Agape this weekend. Stop by and pick one up.

Representatives from Saint Benedict Catholic School will be with us during the Agape this weekend. Saint Benedict Parish, Holmdel is part of our Co-hort 13. I have been advised by the Reverend Pastor that families who are bona fide members of parishes within our co-hort 13 will receive the in parish tuition rate without changing parishes. That is, parishioners from our parish wishing to send their child/ren to Catholic school may do so at Saint Benedict while remaining a parishioner of Saint Mary parish and receive the parishioner tuition rate. I am very grateful to Fr. Garry Koch and his staff for this accommodation. Representatives from Saint Gabriel Cemetery & Mausoleum, Marlboro will also be present to answer questions about their services. Take time to stop by and take a look.

There are many opportunities for you to participate – from Presidency to Welcoming, and several other positions. No previous experience is necessary – though past Board members are certainly welcome to “come back”! It is important to note that most positions have Co-chairs and/or committee members. No Board member has to worry about being “alone”. No position is difficult and everyone helps out. Any Board member would be happy to tell you how wonderful the “sisterhood” is and it is an opportunity to make lasting friendships.
