Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org PASSIONTIDE The practice of veiling the images of Christ and the saints goes back to medieval times, where, beginning on Passion Sunday (the 5th Sunday of Lent in the modern liturgical calendar) all images other than the stained glass windows and the stations of the cross were covered in purple or red cloth. This was, and is done, in order to draw our focus to the Passion and death of our Lord, and remind us that without the sacrifice on the cross, there would be no resurrection and salvation. This is especially poignant on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, where we recall the passion in detail.

Removing the images of the crucifix from our eyes leaves us in a state without the image of our salvation and draws our prayer inward, as we focus on the hope of the coming Holy Season of Easter. Removing the images of the saints (members of the church triumphant) draws our focus to our own penitence, temporarily blocking that promise of the communion of saints from our physical view.

These images are customarily unveiled during the singing of the Gloria at the Easter Vigil. The statuary in our church makes this difficult, due to ladders being necessary for the images of the Holy Family and the Christ behind the sanctuary, so they are unveiled during the decorating of the Church on the morning of Holy Saturday.

Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: Good Friday (April 10) is a day of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat).

All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat): April 3, & Good Friday, April 10 Fast—consume only one full meal.

Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.

Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain.

All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Quo vadis‌ My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Lent. Mary and Martha’s long relationship with Jesus had brought them to believe in him. It must be comforting for us to know that their belief was still less than perfect.

So is ours. And, like Mary and Martha, our belief is strengthened by encounters with Jesus. One conspicuous way we encounter Jesus is at Mass when we expressly take time out of our busy schedules to be present. Other prayer times during the day and week are also times when we consciously strive to encounter Jesus.

Perhaps less evident as encounters with Jesus would be all those times when we meet him through faith-strengthening and hope-giving encounters with other people.

When our discouragement is lessened by a kind remark or when our sinfulness is forgiven by a smile and welcome, we encounter Jesus in the other and are brought to new life. Jesus loves each of us as deeply as he loved Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.

You will begin to notice a shift in the lectionary readings this coming week and next. The focus shifts our attention from

the Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to the cross as the instrument of our salvation. Understood in this context, the cross is presented by the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) as something that is to be endured by Jesus in order that his mission in the world might be fulfilled.

The Gospel according to John presents the cross as the throne which Jesus must ascend in order to fulfill the will of His Father.

That is why in our liturgical prayer we present the Passion in a narrative way on Palm Sunday and in Choral Way on Good Friday.

Although we are unable to come together for liturgical prayer I will celebrate these rites and bless palm for distribution at a later date. I encourage you to pray the readings each day from your home and be in spiritual communion with one another until the day when we can come together to celebrate the Mass and receive Jesus in the Eucharist in Holy Communion.

Exercise good judgment. Be Safe Be well.

Let us remember one another in prayer.

At this time, here at the Parish of St. Mary, we will be suspending our religious education classes until April 18. Please watch for further communications from us.

Registration for students entering 7th and 8th grades in the Fall will begin April 1. For the past several years, these grades have met on Sunday evenings on alternate weekends. We are looking at modifying the Sunday schedule (currently A one week B the next) for this coming 2020 – 2021 school year to (A&B) classes meeting on the same Sunday approximately every 2 weeks. When you go to register your child for the Fall, you will have a choice. We will have a session beginning with the 12 noon Mass and running until 2:30, and a second session on that same Sunday running from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Students will still meet roughly every other weekend. There may be times during the year when a special service activity or speaker might be scheduled between the afternoon and evening sessions or on the off weekends. We would like to keep the sizes of the two groups roughly the same. Therefore when you register, you will be asked to choose which session you would prefer, or indicate if you have no preference. Be sure to register early in April if you have a definite preference. Registration will be on a first come first served basis according to your full completion of the registration process.

RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE Today’s Gospel tells us of the raising of Lazarus.

In Jesus’ exchange with Lazarus’ sister Martha, she refers to the general resurrection of the dead on “the last day.” Jesus then shifts the perspective by identifying himself as “the resurrection and the life.” What does this mean?

Jesus earlier had spoken of the hour “when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live” (John 5:25). When Jesus cries out in a loud voice—“Lazarus, come out!”—Jesus fulfills that role in the present, offering resurrection and life here and now, in a new relationship with him.

Resurrection is offered not only on the last day, and not only at our physical death, but in the mix of our present daily lives. Sometimes we are buried in tombs of suffering or of entrapment in sin. When we encounter death in its many forms, in faith we can hear Jesus, who summons us out of death and into life.
