Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org
The Annunciation of the Lord March 25 is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord - a day which commemorates the announcement made by the Archangel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear a son, and that he would be the savior of the world. Along with the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, the abstention from the Gloria is lifted on this day, as the joy of the Holy Day should be celebrated in full. In the modern Roman Rite, if this date falls on a Sunday or during Holy Week, it is transferred to the next Monday, as the Sundays of Lent and Holy Week cannot be superseded. Nor can it be scheduled during the Easter Octave. The annunciation is also recounted on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception during Advent (another day on which the Gloria is permitted during a penitential season). Although in the course of the gospel narratives the annunciation is inexplicably linked to Christmas, it is important that we also take note of the length of time between the announcement to Mary and the birth of the Lord, in a similar way that we mark the passage of time between Christmas and the Presentation of the Lord. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. Suffering for suffering’s sake is not what transforms us so that we can bear fruit—the dying that leads to new life is how we bear fruit. The dying that repentance requires forestalls meaningless dying; the dying we do in order to bear fruit is the result of cultivating an attitude of openness to constant transformation; the “fertilizer” is the charity, fasting, and prayer of our Christian penance. Repentance is cultivating the soil so it can bear fruit. Repentance is taking what is dying and coaxing it to life. Repentance is changing one’s mind, letting go of the narrowness of our own perception of how life should be and embracing the expansiveness of God’s plan for salvation. Repentance, in terms of changing one’s mind, is really conversion. Although repentance and conversion are major Lenten themes (and surely capture the work of preparation for our renewal of baptismal commitment), this isn’t something we do only these six weeks out of the year. Lent (dying) and Easter (rising) characterize our Christian living, concretize our baptismal commitment, spell out the paschal mystery. If we wish to bear fruit we must die to ourselves. Interesting paradox: if we don’t bear fruit, we die, but we must die to bear fruit. The choice before us is about dying: meaningless dying (selfishness) or fruitful dying (to self for the sake of others). The gospel parable says for “three years” the owner of the fig tree had been waiting for good fruit. God waits more than three years for us to bear fruit—God waits each and every day of our lives for us to bear fruit. The good news is that God never
gives up. God continually cultivates and fertilizes—especially by the ongoing proclamation of God’s word and the invitation to God’s table. All we need do is respond by dying to self. Then God brings forth new life in us. Last weekend it was highlighted that the Saturday 4:00 pm Mass will continue through the Saturday of Palm Sunday Weekend (and will resume the Saturday of the First Sunday in October). The Easter Vigil (Saturday of Easter Sunday) is scheduled for 8:00 pm. This year Easter falls late into April and the Church’s Liturgical Law indicates that the vigil is to begin after sundown. The following Saturday we will resume the Saturday Evening 5:00 pm Mass and will continue throughout the summer months. This weekend we are hosting a new initiative, Rise Against Hunger! Our parish purchases the food items and the packing of the food is done by volunteers The goal this weekend is to fill 10,152 meals in 2 hours, with another 10,152 to be package next weekend. I am grateful to parishioner, Martha Cowles, for presenting this opportunity to our Parish Pastoral Council and to all of our parishioners for financially supporting our parish so that we can respond to the poor and needy. Thanks to Dr. Bridges and our Confirmation Candidates for taking the lead on this effort. Parishioners are welcome to come and participate. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday Peace. Father Jeff

10 Mass Matters: Reflections of a Parish Priest by Fr. William Bausch $15.00 will be available at next AGAPE May 19
For the next few decades, if not longer, the Church will be trying to recover from the economic and moral costs of the loss of numbers, the critical decline of priests and the global aftermath of the horrendous clergy sexual abuse scandal. The Church will survive but not in the way it previously existed. Those days are over. Clericalism, secrecy, the leadership and credibility of the bishops are all in the gristmill of change. The current crisis, the greatest since the 16th century Protestant Reformation, is forcing the widening of criteria for priesthood, a deeper appreciation of the baptismal gifts the laity and the reclaiming of the charisms of women. More and more Catholics, determined to reclaim their Church, are rallying for change. This book offers that change at its source: the Mass and its concomitant imperative of the formation of intentional Catholics. It insists on the need to make our communal source of unity and strength, the liturgy, as clean, focused and empowering as possible because the deep truth is that the people kneeling next to you will be your strongest allies in rebuilding a Church so badly in need of reform. So don’t be put off by this book’s initial lighthearted focus on the criticisms of the Mass, critiques both sober and cranky, serious and funny, challenging and entertaining. Rather try to be mindful of the subtle subtext that slowly sneaks up on you and ultimately invites you to a new mantra to live by, to reform by: don’t leave. Lead.
