A message from Bishop O’Connell on measures to mitigate spread of COVID-19 God has not abandoned us and is present among us. As we learn each day of the growing concern surrounding the spread of the coronavirus in our communities, we need to have faith and confidence in God, especially in times like these, praying that He will see us through the present adversity safely.

Mindful of the Lord Jesus’ own words in St. Luke’s Gospel, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his Cross daily, and follow me (Luke 9: 23),” the coronavirus pandemic has placed such a Cross before us.

In response to the latest guidelines from national and state health authorities aimed at stopping the spread of the disease, I have directed the following: MASSES, SACRAMENTS AND OTHER CHURCH SERVICES  All public Masses throughout the Diocese of Trenton will be temporarily suspended through April 3, 2020. That date is subject to change as the coronavirus pandemic evolves.  Baptism, funerals and weddings may continue based on the judgement of pastors, with the caution that crowds should not exceed 50 persons as mandated by the State of a New Jersey.  Social distancing practices (3-6 feet of space between participants) should be observed for any event inside church spaces.  Churches should remain open for prayer, private devotion and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Pastors are asked to consider Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during the day. Praying in large groups, however, should be avoided.  Attention should be paid to the cleanliness of our church facilities.  Televised or online celebrations of the Mass and other religious programming are available for use of the faithful during this time.  All scheduled Confirmations in the Diocese will be temporarily postponed until after Easter and will be rescheduled after that time.  The Sacrament of Penance should remain available according to need, but public Penance Services are not to be conducted.  The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick should also remain available for true emergencies. Hospitals and nursing homes may be on lock-down and priests are advised to check on their status beforehand.

The Catholic faithful of the Diocese — priests, religious and lay faithful — are advised to keep informed and updated regarding the progress of the coronavirus pandemic during this national and state emergency. We will continue to evaluate new information that could impact these directives and will post regular updates to dioceseoftrenton.org/coronavirus; TrentonMonitor.com/coronavirus and on the Diocese’s social media pages.

FINALLY, avoid crowded areas, observe careful hygiene, keep appropriate distances outside the home and if feeling sick, stay at home. I ask that all of the faithful remember the elderly and other persons at risk in their families and communities, and reach out to them by phone to see if help is needed.

Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: Good Friday (April 10) is a day of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat).

All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat): March 27, April 3, & Good Friday, April 10

Fast—consume only one full meal.

Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.

Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org The entrance antiphon is one of the propers of the Mass, that is the text that changes each day in accord with the liturgical calendar, and in the hierarchy of the liturgy, one of the parts that should be sung each day. Here at the Parish of Saint Mary, we’re not there yet, but are making steady strides in adhering more closely to the general instruction.

The 4th Sunday of Lent, also known as Laetare Sunday gets its name from the first few words of the Entrance Antiphon for the day.

The full translated text reads: Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her.

Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast.

The readings for the day take a more hopeful turn as we are now 21 days from the celebration of Easter. In Year A, the Gospel of Jesus curing the man born blind is proclaimed. In Year B, the famous John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. In Year C, the story of the prodigal son is heard.

Some differences from the rest of the Lenten season: The clergy wear Rose-colored vestments, not unlike Gaudate Sunday, the day of rejoicing during the Advent season. The organ may be used as a solo instrument, a departure from its otherwise restricted use during the season of Lent. Flowers may be temporarily used in church decorations. The sense of being able to rejoice with the hope of the resurrection can be reassuring for some and the Church gives us this day for that reason. With the 5th Sunday of Lent, a more somber tone returns as we enter passiontide, Palm Sunday with the commemoration of the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper and the crucifixion, followed by Holy Week and the Sacred Paschal Triduum.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent also known as Laetare Sunday. Rose Vestments (not pink) are worn today to mark the progression of the Christian faithful through the Season of Lent toward Palm Sunday and the conclusion of the Lenten Season on Holy Thursday at sundown.

Baptism is a ritual sign of coming to belief and admits one to full participation in worship.

This statement does not imply that those who have not been baptized or fully received into the Church have not worshiped God. They have or they probably wouldn’t be seeking to be initiated. Initiation changes the way one can worship and the sign of this is admittance to Eucharist and reception of the Body and Blood of our Lord. Worship, however, is far more than attendance and involvement in ritual acts, as important as that is. Worship includes a mission to reach out to others who are in need of spiritual insight, a deepened faith, or healing in any way. Authentic worship always requires a response of charity on behalf of others.

Plans are underway for the preparation of our grounds for springtime. We will be cleaning up some of the planting beds throughout the property. The Spring Clean Up scheduled for March 28 of our 25 acre property has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled for later in the Spring. Preparations are well underway for

Holy Week, The Triduum, and the Easter Season. I am grateful to all of our volunteers and those who serve in the various ministries.

The customs of our Church are only possible when we pull all of our resources together working toward a common goal. The Liturgical Prayer for these seasons (Lent-Triduum-Easter) are rich in symbol and metaphor. They serve to remind us of God’s Steadfast Love for us and the call for us to Love One Another.

If you have not made your gift to the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal please do so as soon as possible.

Our parish continues to make progress toward reaching the minimum goal of $75,000.00. We need you to participate this coming week. Please consider making your gift this week. Every gift counts. We need you to participate.

The Lenten Penance and Reconciliation Service next Sunday afternoon 29 March has been cancelled. This is to help safe guard the health of the parish community as well as the health of our diocesan priests. The Easter Quad-fold and 2020 Easter Stewardship Envelope were mailed late last week. You should be receiving them in the coming days. Please keep the schedule in a convenient spot for easy reference. Invite your friends and relatives to join with us in prayer. Have a great week. Registration for students entering 7th and 8th grades in the Fall will begin April 1. For the past several years, these grades have met on Sunday evenings on alternate weekends. We are looking at modifying the Sunday schedule (currently A one week B the next) for this coming 2020 – 2021 school year to (A&B) classes meeting on the same Sunday approximately every 2 weeks. When you go to register your child for the Fall, you will have a choice. We will have a session beginning with the 12 noon Mass and running until 2:30, and a second session on that same Sunday running from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Students will still meet roughly every other weekend. There may be times during the year when a special service activity or speaker might be scheduled between the afternoon and evening sessions or on the off weekends. We would like to keep the sizes of the two groups roughly the same. Therefore when you register, you will be asked to choose which session you would prefer, or indicate if you have no preference. Be sure to register early in April if you have a definite preference. Registration will be on a first come first served basis according to your full completion of the registration process
