Saint Joseph and Saint Patrick The Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated annually on March 19th. Saint Joseph is the patron saint of families, fathers, workers, among other things, and of the Universal Church. As the spouse of Mary and a key figure in the Holy Family, his feast day is at the rank of Solemnity. On the solemnity of St Joseph, it is customary to hold a Saint Joseph’s Table. This is a feast celebrated on or near March 19, and the poor, homeless, and sick are invited to share in the festivities and food. Another simpler tradition involved the taking of food to others, a custom that we partake in here. The Feast of Saint Patrick, Bishop, patron saint of Ireland is an optional memorial celebrated on March 17th. He is largely credited with the conversion of Ireland to Catholicism. Having been born a Roman citizen in what is modern-day Great Britain, he was captured by the Irish in his teen years and forced into slavery. He escaped several years later, and returned home. Having received a vision, he entered the priesthood and was ordained, and sent to Ireland as a missionary. Saint Patrick’s Breastplate is a well-known poem, often used as a prayer "Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.” This year, 2019, we do not observe Saint Patrick’s Day in the church calendar, although we do in the secular world. The reason for this: feasts in the church are ranked. At the top are Solemnities and Sundays, followed by Feasts, Obligatory Memorials, and Optional Memorials. Solemnities can replace Sundays (like if Christmas falls on a Sunday), as do some feasts (The Exaltation of the cross is one example, Candlemas another), during Ordinary Time. The Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter take precedence. Memorials must be celebrated when falling on a weekday, but do not supersede a Sunday. Optional memorials are just that: they may be celebrated, but cannot replace a Sunday. And as in 2019, the 17th of March is a Sunday, so we observe the 2nd Sunday of Lent. Andrew J. An abbreviated Sunday Mass schedule will be implemented during holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Fourth Sunday of Advent, and Holy Family, where the only Sunday Mass will be 10 am. This is due to the availability of Liturgical Ministers and seasonal vacations.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. Baptism is our covenant with the Lord. Rather than animal offerings and “smoking fire pot and flaming torch” (first reading), the sign of our covenant with God is water, Chrism, white garment, and lighted candle. Luke’s allusions to Jesus’ death in Jerusalem prompt an allusion to our being plunged into Jesus’ dying and rising in the baptismal waters. We are invited this Sunday to see our baptism in light of the transfiguration. Baptism isn’t simply a ritual we perform, but a covenant with God that we live out the rest of our lives. During Lent as we walk with the elect through their final preparation for baptism we, too, prepare to renew our covenant with God at Easter. This means that we not only already share in God’s life and look forward to that day when we will share eternal glory with God, but we also embrace the suffering and death. Let’s face it: constant dying to self gets tiresome! This Sunday we are given a glimpse of glory to help ease away the discouragement of a lifetime of self-emptying. This tells us something about how we might keep Sundays. If each Sunday is a day of rest, a time to be good to ourselves, to do something special that is uplifting, to enter into a moment of glory, we would be better fortified to continue dying to self. As we continue our journey through the Season of Lent, please avail yourself to the celebration of the Way of the Cross each Friday Evening and the daily reflections in the “Lent & Easter Books”. Preparations are well underway for Holy Week, The Triduum and
The Easter Season. I am encouraged by the new faces who are getting involved. While there are many expectations about how things should be, there is not a similar willingness to get involved. Remember, that if you are unwilling to walk the walk then you should not offer an opinion of how things should or might be concerning our communal life. Stewardship is about sharing…especially our time and talent. When we share our time and talent in service to others we reap tremendous results as we build our community of faith. Many of our volunteers and lay leaders comment how much activity there is during the week. Our parish continues to provide for the needs of many, and we strive to improve our communication and the opportunities that we provide for our parishioners to come to the parish office. So, don’t be shy…get involved. Many thanks to all of our parish volunteers for sharing your Time & Talent. You are GREAT! Many thanks to Jessie Solis for purchasing the material, sewing and embroidering new corporals, large and small, for use in the celebration of the sacred liturgy in the Church, Chapel and Lenten Chapel. These linens are used upon the altar on which the chalices and patens are then placed during the consecration of the Mass. Jessie is the proprietor of Solis Couture here in 07722. Jessie is very talented in creating beautiful fashion as well as hemming. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to all those who honor their Irish Heritage by honoring this great missionary of Christianity. Confirmation Students Service Project March 24 & 31st 4:30 - 6:30 pm Our Confirmation Prep Candidates will participate in a RISE Against Hunger Meal Packaging event here at St. Mary Parish! This will be the most fun and fastest paced Confirmation Prep class this year. You don’t want to miss it. RISE Against Hunger is a US-based organization driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Established in 2005, the program was created to give volunteer groups like, our Confirmandi, the opportunity to make a direct impact AND to become educated, engaged advocates for ending hunger. They’ll gain experience in team building, creative problem solving, goal setting and achievement. Meals will be distributed to those in need around the globe, meeting immediate needs today while enabling communities to break the cycle of poverty. So what is a Meal Packaging Event? The RISE Against Hunger meal packaging events are a fun and fast paced way to get our Confirmation Candidates involved by assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals made up of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. It costs $.34 cents to produce each meal and there is a 10,152-meal minimum for events. Event hosts fulfill this cost through a donation. Our goal is to fill 10,152 meals in 2 hours!
