Saint Joseph and Saint Patrick The Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated annually on March 19th. Saint Joseph is the patron saint of families, fathers, and workers, among other things, and also of the Universal Church. As the spouse of Mary and a key figure in the Holy Family, his feast day is at the rank of Solemnity. On the solemnity of St Joseph, it is customary to hold a Saint Joseph’s Table. This is a feast celebrated on or near March 19, and the poor, homeless, and sick are invited to share in the festivities and food. Another simpler tradition involved the taking of food to others, a custom that we partake in here. The Memorial of Saint Patrick, Bishop, patron saint of Ireland is an optional memorial celebrated on March 17th. He is largely credited with the conversion of Ireland to Catholicism. Having been born a Roman citizen in what is modern-day Great Britain, he was captured by the Irish in his teen years and forced into slavery. He escaped several years later, and returned home. Having received a vision, he entered the priesthood and was ordained, and sent to Ireland as a missionary. Saint Patrick’s Breastplate is a well-known poem, often used as a prayer "Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.”

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. Coming to know Jesus as the Savior of the world requires a constant deepening of faith, a faith that comes from the “gift of God.” Our lives constantly play out the struggle to deepen our faith and get to know Jesus better; the journey of all disciples is to come to deeper belief. One way to deepen our faith and come to know Jesus better is by spending more time with him as a Friend. Lent is an opportune time to become more attentive to Jesus’ presence—especially in prayer—and encounter him as One who loves us. Another way is to enumerate the blessings God has already given us and remember that these truly are gifts from God. Yet another way to deepen our faith, and come to know Jesus better, is by coming to a deeper selfunderstanding of ourselves as body of Christ, and make concrete efforts to act like Christ’s body. Something so simple as saying thank you or smiling at another who looks sad or depressed are simple acts, but they remind us of who we are: Christ for others. Our Parish Lenten Penance & Reconciliation Service is scheduled for Sunday, 29 March at 3:00 pm in our parish church. I am pleased to inform you that we have a number of priest confessors scheduled for your convenience. Please come with your family, children, neighbors, and friends to receive the grace of this awesome sacrament of God’s Mercy. We are in the process of scheduling ministers for Holy Week, the Triduum, and Easter Sunday. Please be open to serving our parish on these most holy days when the Sacred Liturgy calls us to reflect on the great sacrifice of Christ for us. We are in the preparation stages for the July 2020 – June 2021 Master Calendar. Parish Leaders will soon receive their copy to request dates/facilities for the
upcoming year. Preparations for the 2020-2021 Financial Budget is beginning. Input for Capital Projects from the Staff and other Pastoral Committees are being considered by the staff. It is essential that these Pastoral Leadership Groups assist in the process of forming the budget and prioritizing the capital projects each year. It is imperative that we move toward “Mission directed budgeting” and move away from “Budgeting the mission”. The Parish Trustees and Parish Finance Council along with the Pastor make the final determination for Staff Salary proposals with the Diocese of Trenton setting the standards for Clergy and Religious and compensation packages in the parish. Please continue to pray for and support all of those parishioners who generously share their time and talent to insure good stewardship of our parish resources and a sense of shared ownership that is critical as we continue to move forward. Progress continues to be made in our steady progression toward attaining our goal for the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal. As we make progress toward our parish goal, it remains important that we continue to expand the number of participants in this important initiative. We need broad support in order to achieve our goal. May God bless you for your tremendous spirit of sharing. This weekend we welcome Father Michael G. Dandurand, a priest and pastor serving the Diocese of Toledo in Ohio, to our parish. He is a reserve chaplain for the US Armed Forces and is participating in an annual training program at Joint Base MDL in New Jersey. Father Mike and I were college classmates so many years ago. I am confident that you will welcome him to our community. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

2020 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL UPDATE As of 9 March 2020 Parish goal: $75,000 Total raised: $24,250 Percentage of goal: 32% # of Donors: 112 Payments received: $15,444 Average gift: $217 The following is an example of a ministry made possible through the generous support of the ACA. ACA in Action! Evangelization Each parish is unique and offers religious education in ways that meet the needs of over 40,000 students in the local community. Some program structures are very traditional; others are innovative. Over 600 adults in various stages of formation were brought to full initiation with the Church in our diocese last year. Many opportunities for the enrichment of faith are found in events and activities in parishes throughout the diocese, such as Bible Study, parish missions, lecture series, and online learning. These ministries help with adult faith enrichment by providing support for parish leaders and access to resources. Your gift, in essence, builds up our Catholic faith. Together in Mission is a tool within our Diocese that has been created to help pastors, parish clergy and staff, parish ministry leaders and families become more intentional about evangelizing at every phase of life. Your gift supports this innovative tool which impacts the real lives of Catholics growing in faith. Thank you to all parishioners who have already made a pledge. If you have not done so yet you can do it here: Please select St. Mary Church, Colts Neck from the Parish Affiliation dropdown menu.

The water that God gave the Hebrews was a foreshadowing of the Baptism that Jesus would offer. Jesus is “living water” and wants to give Himself to everyone. Jesus reaches out to those who don’t fit the mold of the “religious person” - that’s who He died for. How does our Church make “non-traditional” families feel welcome (or do they)?
