Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

St Patrick The Memorial of Saint Patrick, Bishop, patron saint of Ireland is an optional memorial celebrated on March 17th. He is largely credited with the conversion of Ireland to Catholicism. Having been born a Roman citizen in the late 4th century in what is now modern day Great Britain (Britain was part of the Roman Empire at the time), he was captured by the Irish in his teen years and forced into slavery. He escaped several years later, and returned home. Having received a vision, he entered the priesthood and was ordained, and returned to Ireland as a missionary, to fulfill what he had seen in his vision, to walk among the Irish. He eventually became a bishop, and was responsible for the conversion of thousands, notably including many women who then professed to become nuns. Saint Patrick’s Breastplate is a well-known poem, often used as a prayer: "Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.”

Become more involved at The Parish of Saint Mary! Please consider becoming a liturgical minister or part of our music ministry! Altar Servers, Ushers, Readers, Cantors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are very important to our parish and we would love you to be involved! Please contact Andrew Macirowski at worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org to let us know you are interested!

Saint of the Week: Peter, Apostle, Pope and Martyr, d. c. 64 Even the great saints need God’s forgiveness and grace. Peter, like the rest of us, turned away from Jesus for a time. Peter, as Scripture tells us, was a son of John and the brother of Andrew. He was a native of Bethsaida, a small village near Lake Tiberias. With his father and brother, Peter, at that time called Simon, worked as a fisherman on Lake Genesareth. Through the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, we know much more about Peter than we do about many of the early saints. We know, for example, that Peter was present at the marriage feast at Cana when Jesus worked his first miracle. While Peter and the other Apostles did not immediately give up their professions upon meeting Christ, we know that they became good friends of Christ and would join him any time that he was proclaiming the Good News in their vicinity. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. Baptism is our covenant with the Lord. Rather than animal offerings and “smoking fire pot and flaming torch” (first reading), the sign of our covenant with God is water, Chrism, white garment, and lighted candle. Luke’s allusions to Jesus’ death in Jerusalem prompt an allusion to our being plunged into Jesus’ dying and rising in the baptismal waters. We are invited this Sunday to see our baptism in light of the transfiguration. Baptism isn’t simply a ritual we perform, but a covenant with God that we live out the rest of our lives. During Lent as we walk with the elect through their final preparation for baptism we, too, prepare to renew our covenant with God at Easter. This means that we not only already share in God’s life and look forward to that day when we will share eternal glory with God, but we also embrace the suffering and death. Let’s face it: constant dying to self gets tiresome! This Sunday we are given a glimpse of glory to help ease away the discouragement of a lifetime of self-emptying. This tells us something about how we might keep Sundays. If each Sunday is a day of rest, a time to be good to ourselves, to do something special that is uplifting, to enter into a moment of glory, we would be better fortified to continue dying to self. As we continue our journey through the Season of Lent please avail yourself to the daily reflections in the “Lenten Black Books”. Daily Mass is another way to observe Lent by receiving Holy Communion more frequently. Preparations are well underway for Holy

Week, The Triduum and The Easter Season. I am encouraged by the new faces who are joining our parish and participating in Sunday Mass. Stewardship is about sharing… especially our time and talent. When we share our time and talent in service to others we reap tremendous results as we build our community of faith. Many of our volunteers and lay leaders comment how much activity there is during the week. Our parish continues to provide for the needs of many and we strive to improve our communication and the opportunities that we provide for our parishioners to come to the parish office. So, don’t be shy…get involved. Many thanks to all of our parish volunteers for sharing your Time & Talent. You are GREAT! There was wonderful participation for Ash Wednesday. Thank you for taking the time to have ashes imposed as a visible sign of the call to conversion. How awesome it was that so many brought with them food for the poor and needy. Our parish continues to grow in awareness of and response to those who are suffering. I encourage you to participate in the 2022 Annual Catholic Appeal this week. To those who have already made their gift THANK YOU. It is an easy process. You may do so online or by completing a pledge card and mailing to the specified address. Every gift helps make a difference. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to all those who honor their Irish Heritage by honoring this great missionary of Christianity. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462).
