Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

The full translated text reads: Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her.

Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be sa sfied at her consoling breast.

The readings for the day take a more hopeful turn as we are now 21 days from the celebra on of Easter. In Year A, the Gospel of Jesus curing the man born blind is proclaimed. In Year B, the famous John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. In Year C, the story of the prodigal son is heard.

The clergy wear Rose-colored vestments. The organ can be used as a solo instrument. Flowers can be used in church decora ons. The sense of being able to rejoice with the hope of the resurrec on can be reassuring for some and the Church gives us this day for that reason. Next week, we enter Passion- de in prepara on for the Holy Week observances.

Fasting Works of Love & Charity

All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat).

Fast—consume only one full meal.

Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.

Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain.

All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Chrism Mass St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral at 61 Georgia Rd., Freehold NJ 07728 Monday, March 26th at 7:30 pm During the Mass, Bishop David O’Connell will bless the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and consecrate the Sacred Chrism. We use the first for adult catechumens and infants, the second for anointing the sick, and the Sacred Chrism for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests, and the consecration of altars. These oils will be received by the parish at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and will be used for sacramental life of our parish.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Fourth Sunday of Lent known as “Laetare Sunday”. The contradiction in the paschal mystery is that what we abhor—the cross— becomes the instrument of redemption. God saves Israelites from death but in the paschal mystery we must embrace death for the only way to eternal life is by dying to ourselves, by allowing ourselves to be lifted up like Christ.

Our good works (reaching out to others, doing our daily tasks with love and care, acting justly and charitably, etc.), then, are our way of being “lifted up.” This is how we are crucified, so that we might live.

This weekend, following the Saturday 5:00 pm Mass we are hosting Chris Bray for an evening of prayer and reflection. Please join us for this Great Lenten Opportunity of Catholic Witness.

This is a great intergenerational opportunity for all of our parishioners. This coming Saturday is the Memorial of Saint Patrick, Patron of Ireland and Irish Americans. Mass will be celebrated in our parish on Saturday morning at 9:00 am.

Come to Mass in honor of Saint Patrick, pray for those immigrants from Ireland to our country who helped to build our Catholic Church in the United States of America.

During the Season of Lent, Mass is celebrated daily in the Lenten Chapel. Come and receive Holy Communion more frequently so that the special grace of the sacrament will accompany you throughout each day. The Way of the Cross is prayed each Friday evening at 7:00 pm in the Lenten Chapel. This custom has been part of the Lenten Journey for many centuries.

It is an opportunity for us to reflect in a special way on the Passion and Death of Jesus.

Next weekend is our Parish Lenten Penance & Reconciliation Service.

We have a full complement of Priest Confessors to provide for our needs. Please plan to participate! We continue our preparation for Holy Week, The Triduum and Easter Sunday. We ask for your kindness and cooperation in assisting us with preparing and celebrating these ancient rites our church.

Our Easter packet has been prepared and mailed to all of our registered parishioners. You should receive it within the coming week or so. If you have not received it by 18 March, please contact the parish office. Thanks to all those who have made a gift or pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. We continue to inch forward in achieving our Parish Goal. This can only happen when we participate according to our means.

Deacon Vincent Rinaldi has requested a transfer from the Parish of Saint Mary to the CoCathedral of Saint Robert Bellarmine, and His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton has approved the request. Saint Robert Parish is in need of an additional deacon owing to retirement and deacons re-locating. I was consulted and agreed with the request. Let us thank Deacon Rinaldi for his six or so years of service to our parish community and pray that he will continue to grow in ministry at his new assignment. During these final weeks of the Lenten Season, may it continue to be a special time of grace for you and your family. Let us remember one another in prayer. Have a great week. Happy Sunday. Peace. The New Day Bereavement Support Group Ministry of Consolation Invites You…to participate in a nine week program for those who are grieving the death of loved ones and want to work through the tasks of grief in a structured way using the New Day Journal, A Journey from Grief to Healing. Fulfill, formerly known as The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Coun es distributes more than 13 million meals per year, including to over 40,000 children. To enlighten us on the many services Fulfill provides, the Martha Mary Guild is hos ng a guest speaker Wendi Silver from Fulfill – pictured above. At this mee ng, there will be a "Free Will Offering" for the benefit of Fulfill.

The rosary will be said in the Spiritual Center Chapel at 11:30 am., followed by a BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) in Madonna Hall, with refreshments and dessert provided by the Guild. Wendi will start her discussion around 12:30 pm.
