The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat). Fast—consume only one full meal. Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain. All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org During Lent, you may notice a much more reserved use of the organ. There are no preludes or postludes. The organ is played quietly to medium volume at most, as the sole purpose is to support the congregational singing and not to add any musical embellishments. The organ makes its triumphant return to full glory during the Gloria at the Easter Vigil. There are also no reeds or mixtures used, and if an organ contains any percussive sounds, like chimes or a zimbelstern, they are also not used. What are those? A quick lesson on different types of pipes found in an organ. • Principals and Flutes - Rounded or square pipes made of wood, tin, or other metals; the most common and plentiful pipe, produces the foundation of the organ sound. • Reeds - These stops imitate the sounds of the instrument assigned to them. They are fashioned to sound like a clarinet, a trumpet, a horn, etc… • Mixtures - Similar to the principals, although these use several different pipes to produce a pitch, resulting in rich overtones and a crystalline or piercing sound, depending on the intended function and coupling with other stops. (Keep in mind that in our parish, we do not have a pipe organ. We have a circa 1991 electronic organ which only approximates the sounds produced by a pipe organ.) So, as you can see from the list above, during Lent the organist will only utilize about 1/3 to 1/2 of the organ’s potential. This is to create a more contemplative atmosphere for musical prayer and to also make a marked shift in the liturgy as do the readings and the music chosen. Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Due to the fluidity of the Mass schedules please refer to page 2 of the latest bulletin. The format on page 2 has been changed to include the weekend Masses for both the current and next weekend’s Masses. Next scheduled change from the current schedule will be the Easter weekend: Solemn Vigil of the Lord’s Resurrection Saturday, April 20, 8:00 pm Vigil * no 4:00 pm Mass or Confessions Easter Sunday of the Lord’s Resurrection Sunday, April 21, 2019  7:30 am Mass  8:45 am Mass  10:15 am Mass  12:00 pm Mass

How is the Easter Vigil Mass time selected? The Vigil, by its very nature, "ought to take place at night". It is not begun before nightfall. Therefore approximately if the placement of Easter is before April 1st then the Vigil can be celebrated as early as 7 pm, between April 1 -15 7:30 pm, and after April 15th at 8 pm.

The weekend of the Second Sunday of Easter, April 27 & 28 will have the Saturday Mass at 5:00 pm and Penance & Reconciliation at 4 pm. This Saturday schedule will continue until Oct 2019. An abbreviated Sunday Mass schedule will be implemented during holidays such as Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Fourth Sunday of Advent, and Holy Family, where the only Sunday Mass will be 10 am. This is due to the availability of Liturgical Ministers and seasonal vacations.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. The ritual act of professing our faith is no substitution for living it in our daily lives. When we are tested our faith is put to the test, too, and we are faced with a choice of how we live. Lent is a time to examine our choices. Just as God led Israel to a “land flowing with milk and honey” (first reading), so will God lead us to salvation if we “call on the name of the Lord” (second reading). For us, though, our desert is the demands of everyday living and our salvation is found on the cross. Each day we take up our cross and lay down our life for the sake of others, we are building strength to resist temptation and come to greater faith. Our simple acts of kindness are helping us resist temptation. Our complimenting another, offering a word of encouragement help us resist temptation. We don’t have to go out into a desert to find temptation! But we do need God’s nearness to resist it. And that God has promised us. The liturgical Season of Lent has begun and concludes Holy Thursday at which time the Solemn Triduum (Three Days) begins. Lent is a time for us to give up or do without some things in our lives…to search for simpler living. It is also a time for us to do some things extra like daily Mass, the Way of the Cross, Eucharistic Adoration, Scripture Reading, taking more quality time when praying, the Men’s Morning Office each Thursday and the Ladies Morning Office each Friday. Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving are the important Lenten practices for the individual Christian and the Christian Community. I encourage you, regardless of age, to seriously

make an effort to abstain from something and also to commit yourself to doing something extra especially during this great season of grace. The daily Mass is celebrated in our parish as announced in the Parish Bulletin (9:00 am Monday – Friday) in the Lenten Chapel. This is a time that seems to be convenient for many…it is during the morning when it is bright out. Come and draw near to the Lord who is present to us in the Eucharist. Last weekend we hosted a quarterly “new parishioner orientation” for those who are seeking to become members of our parish. This orientation is an important part of getting to know these new parishioner families while sharing a little bit about our parish and the expectations of being a bona fide member of the parish. There continues to be a number of homes for sale in our 07722 community. I encourage you…our parishioners…to welcome new members to our town and if they are Roman Catholic, invite them to participate in our parish by registering. If they are not Roman Catholic, share with them the other two Christian Churches in town…The Reformed Church and the Community Church. To those who have already participated in the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal…Thank you. To those who have not, please do so this coming week. We will have a report in the coming weeks and will share it with you. Many thanks to all those who assisted us for the Ash Wednesday Services as we welcomed many to our parish church for this ancient custom. Have a great week. Let us pray for one another. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Evangelization Ministry to Families, Youth and Young Adults Every person belongs to a family. Families are the foundation of the Catholic parish. In the midst of the family and the parish community, people encounter Christ and learn to be his disciples. Family and Parish are the primary environments in which evangelization takes place. Together in Mission is a tool to support these evangelization efforts. Your gift promotes individuals and family life. Youth events and service opportunities, young adult gatherings, Marriage prep, Baptismal prep, Ministry to separated and divorced persons are just a few of the services offered.

Confirmation Students Service Project March 24 & 31st 4:30 - 6:30 pm Our Confirmation Prep Candidates will participate in a RISE Against Hunger Meal Packaging event here at St. Mary Parish! This will be the most fun and fastest paced Confirmation Prep class this year. You don’t want to miss it. RISE Against Hunger is US-based organization driven by the vision of a world without hunger. Established in 2005, the program was created to give volunteer groups like, our Confirmandi, the opportunity to make a direct impact AND to become educated, engaged advocates for ending hunger. They’ll gain experience in team building, creative problem solving, goal setting and achievement. Meals will be distributed to those in need around the globe, meeting immediate needs today while enabling communities to break the cycle of poverty. So what is a Meal Packaging Event? The RISE Against Hunger meal packaging events are a fun and fast paced way to get our Confirmation Candidates involved by assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals made up of rice, soy, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. It costs $.34 cents to produce each meal and there is a 10,152-meal minimum for events. Event hosts fulfill this cost through a donation. Our goal is to fill 10,152 meals in 2 hours! How can you help?  You can help by contributing to our event. You can help make sure children get the

nutritious meals they need to grow and succeed. Donate through our Online Giving system. https://goo.gl/RHNJf7 or by scanning QR code  We also need about 25 parents to participate and oversee/assist with the event.

Parents of all children receiving their First Communion in May We will have a First Communion Retreat on Sunday, March 10, from 2-3:30 in Madonna Hall. We would like to have all the children who will be receiving their First Communion in May attend along with at least one parent. The First Communion banners for each child will be distributed and (hopefully) completed during our time together. In addition, the children will be instructed in the proper reception of the Sacrament, and they will have an opportunity to practice with unconsecrated hosts. This also counts as an intergenerational event. See you all there.
