Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: Good Friday (April 10) is a day of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat). All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat): March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3, & Good Friday, April 10
Fast—consume only one full meal. Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain. All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org We continually listen to the needs of our parish community and address those needs as we are able. These include needs for communal worship, specifically in the context of certain liturgical functions: music, rites of baptism and christian burial, and physical needs such as those persons with mobility issues. We have recently undertaken steps to address some of these needs. In order to accommodate growth in the music ministry, we have removed the pews on the organ side of the nave, and the replacement of them with smaller pews from the area nearest the tabernacle, allowing for larger ensembles of both singers and instrumentalists for Holy Days. The remaining pews by the tabernacle have been replaced with armchairs for those with mobility issues who may find such seating more helpful. This also creates a flexible space for wheelchairs, personal electric mobility vehicles, etc. More importantly, this allows for a more welcoming and accessible area for those persons who wish or require to receive Holy Communion at their place. Therefore, we ask that those persons please sit in this area. The ushers and extraordinary ministers of holy communion will note your presence and the Eucharist will be brought directly to you. To better suit large family gatherings of those presenting children for baptism (especially when we have several families at a time, and to better accommodate requests for wake services to be held in the church, oversized pews at the rear of the nave have been replaced with the smaller ones behind them, which has the added benefit of opening up the floor space around the font. All of these pews are being repurposed for seating in our Lenten Chapel and then placed throughout the campus during the remainder of the year. These accommodations come after consultation with the parish council, trustees, and staff. Thank you for your patience and understanding in making these adjustments to make better use of our temporal assets to serve our worship community.

During the days and weeks of penance that lie ahead ‐‐‐ from Ash Wednesday, February 26 un l Holy Thursday, April 9, 2020 ‐‐‐ the Catholic Church throughout the world commemorates the peniten al season of Lent. The model Jesus gave us for “these forty days” was his own experience in the desert and the tempta ons that followed him there where he encountered Satan face‐to ‐face. And yet, Jesus, there in the desert ‐‐‐ alone, fas ng and in intense prayer ‐‐‐ beat back the devil and triumphed over tempta on, as strong and as unrelen ng as it was throughout those forty days. The obliga on to observe the laws of fast and abs nence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one peniten al day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the failure to observe any peniten al days at all, or a substan al number of peniten al days, that must be considered serious. The obliga on, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year ‐‐‐ o en called “Easter duty” ‐‐‐ for those in the state of grace should s ll be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 1 to Trinity Sunday, June 7. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another me during the year when there is a just cause. I want to encourage Catholics to go to Confession and to make use of the sacrifices and tradi ons that have always been part of our Lenten prac ces in the Church. We do, indeed, fast and pray with the Lord Jesus and with our fellow Catholics. May this Lent be a me of penance leading to grace and joy for us all at Easter. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M. Bishop of Trenton

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. Temptation is something we usually think of as facing alone. Yet, even Eve was not alone; Adam “was with her”. It seems as though Adam did nothing to help Eve resist the temptation. Neither of them could withstand the temptation of the serpent alone nor did either of them help each other. Neither is Lent our time to withstand temptation alone; it is also a wonderful time to get involved with others spiritually and help each other to grow in goodness and the ability to resist temptation. Most of us tend to keep our spiritual growth and struggles pretty much to ourselves. One marvelous way to help each other is to take some time with those with whom we are in significant relationships to do some in-depth faith-sharing. By sharing our own temptations with others we are encouraged that we are not alone in choosing and serving this God who gives us life—at creation and through “the one Jesus Christ” (second reading). As we begin the Great Season of Lent, let us make room in our lives for some quiet times, prayer, reflection and discernment. It is equally as important to do some things: community service, volunteerism, liturgical celebrations. Please remember in a special way our candidates for the Easter Sacraments.
Have you considered getting involved in a ministry of our parish community? We need everyone to continue to make our parish a welcoming and prayerful community. Evangelization is an important part of Lent. Why not invite a friend or family member to come to church with you? Don’t forget to participate in the Way of the Cross privately in the Lenten Chapel or join with one of our Cohort 13 Parishes. Many thanks to all those who have already made their pledge/gift to the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal. I have sent my gift in already. Please do not put this off. It is important that we have lots of participation so that we can reach our parish goal. We are the only parish in our co-hort 13 that has not reached the minimum goal for the ACA. I know that you want to support our Diocesan Bishop as he provides for the needs of the Catholic Church in Monmouth, Mercer, Burlington and Ocean Counties. Please make your gift this week so that our parish can be counted among all those who achieve their goal. Together we can make great things happen. Consider joining us for the celebration of the mass each weekday at 9am in the Lenten Chapel. It is a great practice to assist with your Lenten observance. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Although it w as not included on the 2nd grade calendar, it was included in an email that went out in the fall. The Retreat has been rescheduled from March 8 to March 22. At the retreat, which should include the child and at least one parent, you will receive a banner kit for creating a banner with your child. This banner will be hung in the Church during the Mass at which they receive their First Communion. We will also present a review for the children on the meaning and significance of the Sacrament. They will also have their first practice for actually receiving the host. Unconsecrated hosts will be distributed. We have a professional photographer present for the First Communion ceremonies. The following is an example of a ministry made possible through the generous support of the ACA. ACA in Action! Catholic Education Administration Catholic schools in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties welcome over 16,000 Catholic and non-Catholic students from many different cultural backgrounds. Parents, as the primary educators of their children, work in partnership with teachers to develop their children's potential in becoming life-long learners. Donations to the ACA help to ensure that curriculum and performance standards and development of educators continue at high levels within our 29 Catholic elementary schools and 6 high schools. Last year your gift helped with reaching out to more than 78,000 alumni who have been given the opportunity to give back so that other students can succeed in our schools.

Temptation is all around us—but it doesn’t have to master us. In and of itself, temptation is not a sin—it’s how we choose to respond to it that matters. How does belonging to a family (your own family, or God’s family) help keep you on the straight and narrow? How is your example helpful to others who might be struggling with something? - Mrs. Jen Schlameuss-Perry
