FOR DEEPER REFLECTION

The Eucharist is the center of our faith.

Question for Children: receiving Holy Communion change how you treat those around you?

Question for Youth: Jesus tells us that through the Eucharist we will remain in him and he is us. How does the Eucharist keep you in relationship with Jesus?

Question for Adults: Share one way that the Eucharist connects us as “one body” – how does it change the way we relate to each other?

SAINT OF THE WEEK

Junípero Serra, Priest, 1713 1784 No person had more influence on the settlement of California than Padre Junípero Serra. He was born Miguel José Serra to parents of humble means, living in Petra on the Mediterranean island of Majorca. His early education took place on the island at the Franciscan convent of San Bernardino. The church there had several small chapels on either side of the main altar dedicated to saints. Young Miguel developed a strong love for these saints while attending Mass, and their names, including San Diego, San Juan Capistrano, Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, San Francisco, later became the names of the cities and missions which he established along the Camino Real in California.

Miguel was ordained in 1737, and took the name Junípero at that time. In the same year, he was named a professor of philosophy at the university in Palma, Spain. He continued with his studies and, in 1742, earned a doctorate in theology. A year later, he was selected to the Dun Scotus chair of theology at the university. He also became renowned as a preacher on the island and was chosen to preach on the highest holy days. READ MORE HERE

WORSHIP & MUSIC

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

This solemnity, one of the later ones to enter in the liturgical calendar, is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost, or 5 days after Corpus Christi; therefore, always on a Friday. Due to the moveable date of Easter, this celebration can occur anyway from late May to early July, although it most often falls during June. Thus, the month of June is also dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart, more specifically to the love of God as symbolized by the heart of Jesus, has been practiced by many and can be traced back as a communal practice to the 11th century and back even further in the private devotions of the early church fathers, such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Ambrose.

Although not a holy day of obligation, it is an obligatory solemnity for the church, meaning that the solemnity will supplant whatever other memorial may normally occur on that day in the calendar. Like a Sunday, it has 3 sets of readings, one for each Sunday cycle of the It also serves as a special day of prayer for the sanctification of priests; as such, all are encouraged to pray especially for priests, that they may continue to live holy lives, and serve well the Lord and his faithful on earth, as well as for vocations to priestly ministry.

The image of the sacred heart is that of a human heart, crowned with flame, surrounded by thorns, a cross rising from the top, pierced with a lance and bleeding. This symbolized Christ’s suffering at Calvary, but also his triumph over death and the power of his love. Statuary often depicts Jesus with his arms outstretched and the heart in front of the chest, or pointing to his heart, calling attention to his love and redeeming grace.

This year, the bishops of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The consecration, scheduled for June 11, 2026 the evening before aims to renew the nation spiritually by entrusting it to Christ’s divine love and mercy. The bishop have encouraged dioceses and parishes across the country to participate through special liturgies, Eucharistic adoration, works of mercy, and a national novena leading up to the event. Rooted in the Church’s long tradition of devotion to the Sacred Heart, the consecration seeks to remind Catholics that true renewal of society comes through conversion of heart and fidelity to the Gospel. Another common practice of enthroning Jesus in your Home this month is one that is encouraged this year in order to bring all families closer to the heart of Jesus as we honor our nation’s anniversary. More information about how to participate can be found HERE.

This week we highlight the NCCL initiative: Easter Egg Hunt~ This year, we implemented the NCCL parameters during our annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter Egg Hunt seeks to engage parish community building as well as catechesis on the paschal mystery of the Resurrection of the Lord. Parishioners of all ages also learned about Divine Mercy Sunday, as it was held on the 2nd Sunday of Easter. We had over 250 parishioners in attendance this year and pre-stuffed over 700 Easter Eggs for the parish grounds. With the arrival of the Easter Bunny, tons of candy and baked treats, it was fun day for all!

How to become a registered Parishioner:

Congratulations to our newly initiated who came into Full Communion with the Church at the Easter Vigil.

Being a registered and active member of a parish is an important part of living out our Catholic faith in community. The Parish of St. Mary considers someone an active member when they:

 Attend Mass regularly

 Participate in the life of the parish

Juniper Barasky

Rachelle Deyo

 And financially support the parish as they are able. We also encourage adult children over the age of 25 to register separately as parishioners, even if they continue to live in the same household. This helps them take personal responsibility for their faith journey and stay connected to the life of the Church. Non-residents are encouraged to register in the parish where they reside or attend Mass regularly.

Quo vadis...

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is far too easy for us to file out of our pews or chairs into the Communion line, receive, return, leave after Mass is over, and get on with our lives. The food and drink that Jesus offers us in this liturgical celebration requires of us conscious preparation, deliberate partaking, and ongoing savoring by how we live. Eucharist changes us to live more holy and self-giving lives. We can’t just put on a costume or cloak of being Jesus’ followers; sharing in the body and blood of Christ means that we share in Jesus’ life of self-giving. This is the only way to eternal life. During this Year of the Eucharist let us be ever more focused on our need to commune with the Lord and our God’s invitation to Come to the Feast!

Corpus Christi provides us an opportunity to think about our own understanding of the Eucharist…Jesus truly present to us…as we continue to respond to the command, “Do this in remembrance of me.” Our participation in the Eucharist requires preparation. It is important that we are ready to encounter the Lord as we come together for the mass. We prepare by determining in advance what mass we will attend; arriving in a timely manner… that is, a few minutes before the start of the mass (at least 5 minutes) in order to settle down and quietly center our thoughts; joyfully participating in the prayers, songs and gestures; remaining until the final blessing; and, lastly, being charitable in the parking lot as we make our way home. Each of us is called to imitate the mystery that we celebrate. That is, to become more and more like Jesus who gave his life for the many. You and I are called to share of ourselves, not from our excess, but from our very wanting. When we truly embrace the Eucharist as the fundamental act of the Catholic Community, then everything else we do or strive to become

is rooted in the Paschal Mystery of Christ. Let us strive to continue to become more and more grounded in the Eucharist as we build God’s Kingdom in our midst.

This week (13 June) is the Memorial of Saint Anthony of Padua. We welcome those who keep the novena in their homes. Come and honor this Doctor of our Church. Sunday, 21 June is the civic observance of Father’s Day. We pray that Saint Joseph will serve as a model for all of our Fathers, Grandfathers, GreatGrandfathers, Godfathers and Expectant Fathers. Thank you for embracing your vocation of Fatherhood and for modeling that for your children. Let us continue to pray for all of these men as they strive to live their vocation.

During the month of June the universal church turns its gaze toward the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus as THE ultimate image of mercy and forgiveness. This year, as part of AMERICA 250, the Conference of Bishops has asked that we entrust our country to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Let us pray for an increased awareness of the need to be agents of healing and reconciliation. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
