Sequences The sequences, as a part of the Mass, began as early Christian Latin hymns. These texts, in poetic form, were sung immediately preceding the proclamation of the Gospel. A proliferation of the writing of sequences occurred during the Middle Ages. However, following the end of that age, after the Council of Trent with the promulgation of the Missal of Pope Pius V (otherwise known as the traditional Latin missal), all but 4 sequences were removed. The sequences for Easter, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, and All Souls remained.

Today, only the Easter and Pentecost sequences are required to be sung, all others being optional.

As the sequences were written in poetic meters and composed in a hymn-like manner, many survive to this day in other forms. The Stabat Mater, which is often used during the Stations of the Cross, is a sequence and is still optional on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15). The Pange Lingua, sung on Holy Thursday and during some Eucharistic processions began as a sequence. Adeste Fidelis, or O Come, All Ye Faithful, while not a sequence, was written in the same style and time period.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we are at the fiftieth day of the Easter celebration: seven weeks of seven days, a week of weeks, now culminating in a festival fiftieth day. While the liturgical color of the Easter season is gold, on this last day we have red. For the first thousand years of the church, there were no firm rules for using colors. Only wealthy churches could afford a full array of colors, and most places used the best vestments, no matter the color, for the greatest feasts. The Church spelled out an exact plan for color, including red for Pentecost, only in 1570, but local differences held on until the 1800’s.

Color experts tell us that red is a hot color, best used for fast-paced, upbeat, active experiences. It is hard to be neutral before red, as any matador will tell you. It invites commitment, draws you in. It is a stimulating color, engaging the eye, stirring hunger. It is the most fitting color for this day when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit into our lives, a dynamic presence overturning neutrality in favor of passion and commitment. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. By this indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we ourselves become advocates of God’s presence for others. This gift of the Spirit, then, makes its demands on us. We must monitor the way we live so that others truly see us as advocates of God’s presence bringing new life. This new life that we share with others might be so simple as a reassuring touch or helping hand. It might be so great as making a sacrifice of time to join the parish choir or volunteer for some task that needs to be done for the good of all. At any rate, living the paschal mystery means that, we bask in the good gift of God’s life that the Spirit brings. Living the paschal mystery means also that this good gift has its cost—we still must die to ourselves in order to be the true presence of Christ for others.

Pentecost marks the 50th day and conclusion of the Easter Season. It is the fulfillment of God’s covenant with those born again through Sacramental Initiation of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist to be with us always until the end of time. It is this Spirit that prompts us to continue to move forward and bring others to Christ. It is this Spirit that sustains us when we address the difficult circumstances in our lives. We begin the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time this coming Monday. However, the next two Sundays are Solemnities of the Lord: Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi. We will return our liturgical environment to a more appropriate style for the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time, which concludes during the month of November with the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.

Congratulations to Deacon John for completing his coursework at Villanova

University’s School of Church Management.

This coursework and subsequent degree will aid Deacon John in his day to day work as Parish Manager at Saint Anselm Parish in Wayside and his work in the Diocese of Trenton to implement the Faith In Our Future restructuring process. We also benefit from his counsel at our parish staff meetings and in sharing his sage counsel. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

We continue to make slow and steady progress in our 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. We are not close to our goal at this time. As Catholics living in the Central NJ Diocese of Trenton, it is our responsibility to assist His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop to oversee our diocese, provide for the needs that exist, disperse charitable and emergency funding as well as maintain proper standards of oversight.

A request letter has been sent to all of our registered parishioners, I ask that you do something to help our parish reach the goal set for us. Your act of faith enables our diocese to continue to meet the changing needs of our local church community. Thank you for your kindness and sharing.

To all those who wore some type of red garment this weekend, Thank You for helping us to decorate the church for this Solemnity of Pentecost. Let us continue to pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our parish community and in our Catholic Church as we strive to build the church in our midst. Many thanks for your thoughtfulness and prayer during my period of convalescence. I am scheduled for a follow up with the medical team this coming week. I am hoping for a good report. 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal Parish Rebate: $11,250 Our Parish has recently received, from the Diocese of Trenton, a check for $11,250 as rebate for reaching our goal in the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). The funds will help to partially cover the expense of the parking lot lights upgrade.

As a reminder, our ACA goals for 2016, 2017 and 2018 were included in the parish’s Faith to Move Mountains (FTMM) minimum goal of $1,250,000. This year we need to reach our ACA goal of $75,000 in full. If you contributed to the ACA in the past, please support it again this year to help us reach our goal and continue to receive rebate funds each year.

PARISH OFFICE VOLUNTEERS Our committed and busy parish staff appreciate some helping hands. If you have some hours a week to help us out at the parish office, please consider volunteering. Parishioners volunteer their time assisting with a variety of business office related tasks as needed. Volunteers provide a welcoming presence in responding to incoming phone calls and office visitors. Duties include answering the phone and assisting parishioners and visitors with Mass cards and questions. Basic office skills and professionalism are required as our office staff represents St. Mary Parish. Training is provided. Rachel’s Vineyard As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for the millions of babies lost to abortion.

However, little is heard about the tremendous emotional pain, regret and crippling remorse that many women and men experience following an abortion. These parents are also victims of a culture of death. They suffer a traumatic wound, with consequences that can last a lifetime. As a pro-life people, our hearts ache for them, too. Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat that offers these wounded parents an opportunity to walk with Christ through the complex circumstances that led to abortion, as well as the devastating aftermath. Rachel's Vineyard also provides a blessed opportunity for parents to begin processing their grief, and to memorialize their children. There is no judgment.

Host an Exchange Student "Have you ever wondered how you can make a significant difference in the life of a young person right where you live? In July our community will be visited by a group of students from Spain. They arrive on June 28th-July 27 th. The students, age 13-17 desire to learn about the American culture as well as improve their English. They are well-motivated, English proficient, fully insured and have their own spending money. During their short stay they will live with the American family as a family member. Family members are able to join the student on their exciting activities.
