Our Catholic Roots… The first Catholic Diocese in the United States was established in Baltimore, Maryland in 1789. As the Catholic Population increased four additional dioceses were established in 1808: New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Boston, MA; Bardstown, KY. The State of New Jersey, for ecclesiastical purposes was divided in two: East and West. The dividing line was from High Point in Warren County to Cape May County. West Jersey was served by the Diocese of Philadelphia while East Jersey was served by the Diocese of New York. The Diocese of Newark was established in 1853 to unify and serve the entire State of New Jersey. The Diocese of Trenton was established in 1881 to serve those living in 14 counties in the western, central and southern territories of New Jersey. Catholics of Atlantic Township, later Colts Neck, were served by the clergy from the Parish of Saint Paul, Princeton during the 1850’s and 1860’s. Clergy from the Parish of Saint James, Red Bank offered pastoral and sacramental care for a period prior to the establishment of the Parish of Saint Rose of Lima, Freehold in 1871. The pastors of Saint Rose provided service and oversight for the Saint Mary Mission intermittently between 1871 and the 1930’s. The original church building located on Heyers Mill Road was opened with the cornerstone being laid in 1879. Saint Mary’s Catholic Church was incorporated 3 January 1887. A priest was assigned and remained for a few months 1890-1891. Beginning in 1905 and continuing for 11 years, the people of Colts Neck were served by the clergy of the Parish of Saint Dorothea, Eatontown. Clergy from the Parish of Saint Catherine of Siena, Farmingdale faithfully served Colts Neck from 1939 until 1972. The pastor of Saint Dorothea, Eatontown purchased the current parish campus (25 acres) in 1960 for $35,000.00. This Particular location was selected since it was geographically close to the center of Colts Neck Township. The Reverend Fr. Raymond Griffin was assigned as pastor in Farmingdale in 1968. Ground for the new campus was broken in 1971. Overseeing the construction of the new campus, His Excellency, The Most Reverend George W. Ahr, STD, Bishop of Trenton, transferred Father Griffin from Pastor of Saint Catherine of Siena, Farmingdale to Founding Pastor of the Parish of Saint Mary, Colts Neck in 1972. FULL-TIME RESIDENT PASTORS: Reverend Fr. Raymond Griffin – 1972-1973 Reverend Fr. William J. Bausch – 1973-1995 Reverend Fr. Edward J. Griswold – 1995-2007 Reverend Fr. Thomas J. Triggs – 2007-2013 Reverend Fr. Jeffrey E. Lee – 2013-present PARISH LAY TRUSTEES: Robert Kelsy, Dennis Buckley, Charles Crine, Raymond Mack, David Timidaiski, George Capra, Walter Zimmerer, Jr., Kathryn Desmond, Marie Curran, Ann Claypool, Bruce Atkinson, Helen DeCerce, John Carlucci, Susan Coleman, William LaMorte, Irene Weller, Roger Zurro, Annette Raynor 22 May 2022

The Solemnity of Pentecost occurs 50 days after Easter. Because Easter is a moveable feast without a fixed date, and as Pentecost depends on the timing of Easter, Pentecost can fall anywhere between May 10 and June 13. The timing of these feasts is also where Catholics get the concept of the Novena - nine days of prayer In Acts 1, Mary and the Apostles prayed together continuously for nine days after the Ascension as they awaited the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost. Pentecost is the celebration of the person of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room. A “strong, driving” wind filled the room where they were gathered, and tongues of fire came to rest on their heads, allowing them to speak in different languages so that they could understand each other, and also gave the apostles the other gifts and fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission - to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations. It fulfills the New Testament promise from Christ (Luke 24:46-49) that the Apostles would be “clothed with power” before they would be sent out to spread the Gospel. As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary, please utilize this worship aid for our 3pm Mass on June 5th. Please remember to arrive early for the musical prelude at 2:30pm.
Saint of the Week: Mary Magdalen de Pazzi, Virgin, 1566-1607
“Easter Duty” The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5-6, 2022 to Trinity Sunday, June 12, 2022. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.
Born into one of the richest and most powerful families in Italy in that era, this saint was christened Caterina in honor of St. Catherine of Siena. From an early age, the girl loved prayer and practiced penance. She also performed works of charity for the poor. She developed a love for the Blessed Sacrament while she was very young and liked being around anyone who had just received Eucharist or anyone who was talking about the sacrament. Caterina received her First Communion at the age of ten, rare at that time, and experienced the first of many ecstasies that she would experience in her lifetime when she was twelve years old.

Our Journey Continues…. Another Bible Study is about to begin, The Great Adventure with Ascension:
Another Bible Study is about to begin through Ascension Press. EPIC: The Early Church – A Journey Through Church History, by Steve Weidenkopf This study encompasses the first three of the twelve EPIC Church history periods: Mustard Seed: AD 33-99 Persecution: AD 100-312 Conversion and Councils: AD 313-499 “As you encounter the people, places, and events in these centuries, you are likely to discover in a real sense – perhaps for the first time – fascinating aspects of the Catholic Faith that will strengthen you in your own journey as a Catholic. Each of these stories – some funny, some sad, some inspiring – help us understand, appreciate, and remember who we are as a family of faith.” “We are the inheritors of the legacies of great men and women who for two thousand years have spread the gospel throughout the world and built a great and lasting civilization.” Come join us. Tuesday evenings: 7:30 – 9:00 pm (10 sessions) Spiritual Center Facilitator: Chuck Young Dates: 7 June – 9 August 2022

Galatians – Set Free to Live. “Galatians is a letter written by St. Paul to the churches he had established on an earlier missionary journey through Galatia (modern-day Turkey). St. Paul announced to the people of the region the Good News that through the work of the Lord Jesus, God calls all men, Jews and non-Jews alike, into a family relationship with himself. The Galatians had eagerly received this gospel, been baptized, and had begun living this new life in Christ. Galatians speaks directly to the central question of faith: What must I do to be saved? And so, the apostle Paul’s writing reflects the passion of a convert and is full of pastoral concern for his spiritual children.”
Come join us! Wednesday mornings: 10:00 – 11:30 am (8 sessions) Spiritual Center Facilitator: Barbara Schaflin Dates: 8 June – 27 July 2022

“I am not with you today because someone in my condition should not be travelling. That is to say, it’s not that I’m just a 93 year old man with a failing memory and bad back but, because of my cancer and Covid I have a compromised immune system which means that in these pandemic days I am not permitted to be in large groups. Small groups, going out and so on are ok but not large gatherings. Which is why my heavy cross is that I can no longer celebrate weekend Masses where there are hundreds of people --weekday is ok---or join you in your glorious 50th Anniversary. I shed a tear at that. I miss terribly not being with you in person seeing you, celebrating with you, hugging you warmly. I have my memories. I spent some 21 wonderful years at St. Mary’s. I was there at the creation so to speak. I had the thrill and blessing of experiencing St. Mary’s evolution from strangers to parishioners to friends and finally, most gloriously, to a warm and wonderful family. St. Mary’s became a home to us all and a magnet for the world. I dearly cherish my memories there and I send my heartfelt congratulations to you and your wonderful pastor and pray that your continued witness in these difficult times may make all things new again. So I bless you: May you: Celebrate the Past. Bless the Present. Embrace the Future. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Amen. Father Bausch” [The above was sent from Reverend Fr. William Bausch, Pastor Emeritus]

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. By this indwelling of the Holy Spirit we ourselves become advocates of God’s presence for others. This gift of the Spirit, then, makes its demands on us. We must monitor the way we live so that others truly see us as advocates of God’s presence bringing new life. This new life that we share with others might be so simple as a reassuring touch or helping hand. It might be so great as making a sacrifice of time to join the parish choir or volunteer for some task that needs to be done for the good of all. At any rate living the paschal mystery means that we bask in the good gift of God’s life that the Spirit brings. Living the paschal mystery means also that this good gift has its cost—we still must die to ourselves in order to be the true presence of Christ for others.
Hood Texas; our Pastoral Associate for Temporal Administration, Edwin Sevillano, will be returning to Peru for a family wedding and a visit with his parents mid-June; Monsignor Troiano will be undergoing Cataract Surgery mid June and again later in the month…please keep him in your prayer. We are so very blessed to share in the ministry of these fine men who generously serve our parish community.
We continue to make slow and steady progress in our 2022 Annual Catholic Appeal. We are close to our goal at this time. As Catholics living in the Central NJ Diocese of Trenton it is our responsibility to assist His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop to oversee our diocese, provide for the needs that exist, disperse charitable and emergency funding as well as maintain proper standards of oversight. I ask that you do something to help our parish reach the goal set for us. Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Volunteers Needed for Jail & Prison Ministry Did you know that inmates in the prisons in NJ have not had Catholic religious services since March of 2020 due to COVID restrictions? That’s more than 2 years without seeing a priest, receiving Holy Communion, or going to the Sacrament of Confession. The prisons are gradually reopening to pastoral visitors, but many of our long-time volunteers have passed away, retired, or moved away. We need to rebuild the ministry. There is urgent need for Priests, Deacons, Lay Ministers of the Eucharist, and possibly RCIA Instructors. If you feel called to explore this opportunity to serve, please contact Peter Haas, Coordinator of Jail and Prison Ministry.
