The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus This solemnity, one of the later ones to enter in the liturgical calendar, is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost, or 5 days after Corpus Christi; therefore, always on a Friday. Due to the moveable date of Easter, this celebration can occur anywhere from late May to early July, although it most often falls during June. Thus, the month of June is also dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart, more specifically to the love of God as symbolized by the heart of Jesus, has been practiced by many and can be traced back as a communal practice to the 11th century and back even further in the private devotions of the early church fathers, such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Ambrose.

Although not a holy day of obligation, it is an obligatory day for the church, meaning that the solemnity will supplant whatever other memorial may normally occur on that day in the calendar. Like a Sunday, it has 3 sets of readings, one for each Sunday cycle of the liturgical year. It also serves as a special day of prayer for the sanctification of priests; as such, all are encouraged to pray especially for priests, that they may continue to live holy lives, and serve well the Lord and his faithful on earth, as well as for vocations to priestly ministry.

The image of the sacred heart is that of a human heart, crowned with flame, surrounded by thorns, a cross rising from the top, pierced with a lance and bleeding. This symbolized Christ’s suffering at Calvary, but also his triumph over death and the power of his love. Statuary often depicts Jesus with his arms outstretched and the heart in front of the chest, or pointing to his heart, calling attention to his love and redeeming grace.

Summer Intensive Religious Education Session Information July Session July 22 - August 2

The July summer session begins July 22. When you bring your child that morning, please bring them into the theater in the Parish Center. At the end of each class day, students in grades 1-3 will be picked up in the theater, while students in grades 4-6 will be picked up in Madonna Hall. All students need to be signed out.

There is an orientation and information session immediately following the noon Mass on July 21. It should last about a half hour. Please do your best to join us for Mass and the brief meeting. If you have a child who is volunteering for the July session, even if it is not for the first week, they should also try to attend the orientation.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The word “journey appears four times in this Sunday’s Gospel, and the word “follow” three times. It is pretty hard not to get at least the message that we are going somewhere, after someone.

Both words yield unexpected repercussions. These two words also divide the gospel into two halves, each with a message for us. During the Season of Ordinary Time we journey with Jesus to Jerusalem. How do we follow? Do we let the distractions of everyday demands keep us from not welcoming Jesus? Or do we steadfastly journey with Jesus, and let that shape how we undertake our daily tasks. Jesus invites us to journey with him in the ordinary circumstances of our lives. This is where the going gets tough. Not in the extraordinary… but in the ordinary. Follow him!

Religious Liberty is a cornerstone of our country. Recently there has been an erosion of religious liberty in our country and throughout the world. Religious liberty shapes our vision and the relationship between the individual and the community, between faith based organizations and government. The erosion of religious liberty continues to blur the lines of responsibility between communities (faith communities in particular) and government. Clearly government is an essential part of our social structure providing order in service to the common good.

However, some have claimed that government continues to lessen the importance of

religious liberty and faith based communities in shaping outreach to the poor and needy, educating and forming our children and society, allowing peaceful expressions of faith. Let us continue to pray that the religious liberty upon which this nation has been established will be respected and expanded recognizing that freedom is first and foremost a gift from God. This coming week we observe Independence Day. It is a day to stop and reflect on the freedom that we enjoy and all those bold visionaries who have secured our country by struggling to serve the common good. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am in the Church on 4 July 2019. Come and give thanks to God for the gift of free will and the capacity to use it wisely. The following weekend we will observe an abbreviated Mass schedule. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 5:00 pm and Sunday at 10:00 am. Please make note of it. We will return to the regular schedule the following weekend. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Augustinian Father Angelo, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum, Rome has been staying with us this past week as he readies to take up his summer covering a parish in the Malibu CA area. It is always good to have Father Angelo with us and to learn of his travels, publications, and lectures. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Have you considered making your IRA Required Minimum Distribution to the Parish of St. Mary If you are over the age of 70 1/2 and have a traditional IRA and /or a Roth IRA, your required minimum distribution can be directed to St. Mary Parish as a “qualifying charitable distribution”.

The requirements include the following: 

The Charitable distribution must be from a traditional IRA or Roth IRA.

The charitable distribution must be direct from the IRA trustee to St. Mary Parish.



The charitable contribution must be on or after you have reached the age of 70 1/2.

The maximum annual exclusion for qualified charitable distribution is $100,000.
