Lifelong Catechesis Week of June 26th - July 2nd Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION: Question for Children: To follow Jesus means to do what is right. Name a time this past week when you followed Jesus by doing the right thing you were asked to do, the first time, without an excuse. Question for Youth: The people in the story had lots of reasons why they couldn’t follow Jesus. What makes it hard to be a disciple of Jesus? Why do you make the choice to follow Jesus even though it is hard? Question for Adults: Sometimes we are like the people in the Gospel and have many excuses for why we cannot follow Jesus. Name a time this past week that you followed Jesus even though you had many excuses.

Andrew J. Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus This solemnity, one of the later ones to enter in the liturgical calendar, is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost, or 5 days after Corpus Christi; therefore, always on a Friday. Due to the moveable date of Easter, this celebration can occur anyway from late May to early July, although it most often falls during June. Thus, the month of June is also dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The devotion to the Sacred Heart, more specifically to the love of God as symbolized by the heart of Jesus, has been practiced by many and can be traced back as a communal practice to the 11th century and back even further in the private devotions of the early church fathers, such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Ambrose. Although not a holy day of obligation, it is an obligatory day for the church, meaning that the solemnity will supplant whatever other memorial may normally occur on that day in the calendar. Like a Sunday, it has 3 sets of readings, one for each Sunday cycle of the liturgical year. It also serves as a special day of prayer for the sanctification of priests; as such, all are encouraged to pray especially for priests, that they may continue to live holy lives, and serve well the Lord and his faithful on earth, as well as for vocations to priestly ministry. The image of the sacred heart is that of a human heart, crowned with flame, surrounded by thorns, a cross rising from the top, pierced with a lance and bleeding. This symbolized Christ’s suffering at Calvary, but also his triumph over death and the power of his love. Statuary often depicts Jesus with his arms outstretched and the heart in front of the chest, or pointing to his heart, calling attention to his love and redeeming grace.

Please remember in your prayers those who have recently died.

Saint of the Week: Irenaeus, Bishop, c. 130-202 This saint, whose name means “peace lover,” was considered the first great theologian in the Church. It is believed that Irenaeus was born in Asia Minor, and became a priest in early adulthood. He was a disciple of Polycarp who, in turn, was a disciple of St. John, the Apostle and Evangelist. When commerce built up between Asia Minor and Gaul, the Church, which had strong roots in the east, began missionary work in Gaul. Polycarp sent Irenaeus to work under Pothinus, the bishop of Lyons in Gaul. Around this time, a cult had developed in Asia Minor under Montanus who claimed the gift of prophecy and spread erroneous interpretations of Sacred Scripture. Read more HERE.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The word “journey appears four times in this Sunday’s Gospel, and the word “follow” three times. It’s pretty hard not to get at least the message that we are going somewhere, after someone. Both words yield unexpected repercussions. These two words also divide the gospel into two halves, each with a message for us. During the Season of Ordinary Time we journey with Jesus to Jerusalem. How do we follow? Do we let the distractions of everyday demands keep us from not welcoming Jesus? Or do we steadfastly journey with Jesus, and let that shape how we undertake our daily tasks. Jesus invites us to journey with him in the ordinary circumstances of our lives. This is where the going gets tough. Not in the extraordinary…but in the ordinary. Follow him!

faith based communities in shaping outreach to the poor and needy, educating and forming our children and society, allowing peaceful expressions of faith. Let us continue to pray that the religious liberty upon which this nation has been established will be respected and expanded recognizing that freedom is first and foremost a gift from God.

This next week we observe Independence Day. It is a day to stop and reflect on the freedom that we enjoy and all those bold visionaries who have secured our country by struggling to serve the common good. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00am in the Church on 4 July 2022. Come and give thanks to God for the gift of free will and the capacity to use it wisely. Next weekend we will observe an abbreviated mass schedule. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 5:00pm and Sunday at 10:00am. Please make note of it. We will return to the regular schedule the following weekend. Thank Religious Liberty is a cornerstone of our you for your cooperation in this matter. country. Volunteers Needed for Jail & Prison Ministry Did you know that inmates in the prisons in NJ have not had Catholic religious services since March of 2020 due to COVID restrictions? That’s more than 2 years without seeing a priest, receiving Holy Communion, or going to the Sacrament of Confession. The prisons are gradually reopening to pastoral visitors, but many of our long-time volunteers have passed away, retired, or moved away. We need to rebuild the ministry. There is urgent need for Priests, Deacons, Lay Ministers of the Eucharist, and possibly RCIA Instructors. If you feel called to explore this opportunity to serve, please contact Peter Haas, Coordinator of Jail and Prison Ministry.
