The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist This weekend, we observe the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. John played an important role in our past, as the one who prepared the people for the coming of Jesus, baptizing them with water and urging them to repent for their sins. John was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, who was past the normal child bearing age, when she became pregnant, as was the will of God. All good Catholics know the historical importance of Saint John, but why is this Solemnity so important that it replaces a Sunday in Ordinary Time? Generally, saints are memorialized on the date of their death, that is their new birth to eternal life. There are 3 exceptions to this (The Nativity of the Lord excluded) : The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, December 8 The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, September 8 The Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, June 24. Both John and Mary were conceived in miraculous ways. Mary, conceived without the stain of original sin through the intercession of the Holy Spirit, and John, born to a woman “who is called barren”, by the Grace of God in old age. Both births were only possible due to the will of God, and as such, are of great significance in our faith. John’s death is also memorialized, with The Passion of Saint John being observed on August 29th. Thus, both Mary and John have both the beginning of their lives on earth and in heaven, observed as special days in our liturgical calendar. Mary, of course, has many more days dedicated to her, but John, due to his importance in the life of Jesus and of our faith, receives this special honor of both a Memorial and Solemnity to his name.
Andrew J. Macirowski, Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist The stained-glass windows that surround our worship area show images of Mary throughout the centuries. Our Lady of Perpetual Help - celebrated on June 27 The ancient Byzantine icon of Mary holding Jesus has a long and colorful history. Like all icons, this image contains many symbols for all who view it. We see that the Child Jesus has run to His Mother, almost losing, in His haste, one of his tiny sandals. He has been frightened by the vision of two angels, shown on both sides of the icon, who are showing Him the instruments of the Passion. Mary holds Jesus in her arms reassuringly, lovingly, while she looks at us. Mary seems to be asking us, "How are you holding Jesus today?" We see that Jesus' little hands are pressed into Mary's strong, sheltering hands as a reminder to us that here on earth Jesus looked to Mary's hands for protection. As we look at this window, let us remember those who are frightened, especially those who are suffering.- text by Lucille Castro

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist. In the birth of John the Baptist we already get a glimpse of the gospel; that we also are the gracious gift of God doing the work of God. John was the precursor who preceded Jesus; we are the disciples who follow Jesus. Even if our own bold announcing of the Messiah leads to death, we must be as faithful to our identity and mission as was John. But for most of us, our dying isn’t so dramatic. Our fidelity and dying is more humble: doing the everyday tasks well in the name of Jesus the Messiah. This weekend we welcome our Pastor Emeritus, Fr. William Bausch who will celebrate and preach at the 8:00 am Mass. He will join us for the Sunday Agape in the parish hall following the 8 am and 10 am Masses. Fr. Bausch will have some of his books available for purchase. Stop by and check them out while greeting our beloved Pastor Emeritus. Please note that the Agape will conclude after the 10 am Mass from now forward. Thank you for you kind understanding. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, has announced a “Year of Youth” beginning July 2018 through June 2019. Additional information will be forthcoming. During these last weeks of the fiscal year, our staff is busy finishing up the details of administration and preparing for a new fiscal year. Preparations are proceeding nicely for the publication of our Annual Stewardship
Report due out in late September of this year. This is one of the ways in which the oversight of our parish is transparent to you, the parishioner stakeholders in the mission and ministry of our parish community. I thank all of you for your serious commitment to our parish so that we can fulfill our obligations and honor the commitments that have been made to compensate our co-workers, properly maintain our facilities, and offering the very best opportunities for worship, outreach, ministry and spiritual growth. As Summer begins, we celebrate God’s gift of recreation so that we might be re-created and readied for continued spiritual, physical and social progress in our lives and in our community. During the coming weeks there may be some time when our parish music ministry personnel will be on holiday and there may be times when we sing a cappella. We will strive to cover our religious services with appropriate music. However, each of us can contribute to the faithful celebration of the liturgy by participating well in our prayer together. It is good for all of us to work hard, but it is equally good that we make time to be re-created. It is necessary for us to remember that we are essentially spiritual beings and not machines; therefore, time for slowing down, smelling the roses and renewing relationships can be vital to our own progress as disciples of the Lord Jesus. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Mass Etiquette: Things To Do And Not Do While at Mass No Food and Drink in Church. The
exceptions would be a drink for small children, water for the priest or choir (if discreet) and water for those who are ill. Bringing a snack into church is not appropriate, because we want to set the church apart as a place of prayer and reflection. Dress modestly and appropriately. Wear
your Sunday Best. As Catholics we believe that God comes down to meet us at every Mass. So, why would we not dress up? Show up at least a few minutes early. If
for some reason you can’t be on time, then try to sit in the back so you don’t disturb others. Getting to Mass early allows you to pray and prepare yourself better for Mass. www.aggiecatholicblog.org
