Corpus Christi The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is celebrated on the second Sunday after Pentecost, or two months after Easter Sunday. This day reaffirms the mystery of our Catholic faith in the transubstantiation. That is, that the bread and wine offered in the holy sacrifice of the Mass become the body and blood of Christ. As noted in the Council of Trent, " the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.�

This is a fundamental belief of our Catholic faith and one that sets us apart from other Christian denominations. It is important to remember that today, and every day, Jesus is present in all the tabernacles of the world, and at every Catholic Eucharistic celebration.

In some places, a procession is held today, similar to the one on Holy Thursday, wherein the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the streets of the town to a smaller church or chapel, where benediction and/or adoration may take place.

As the Solemnity occurs on a Sunday, attendance at Mass is obligatory. The singing of the sequence (after the Epistle and before the A lleluia) is optional on this day, although highly encouraged, especially in communities that bear the name of Corpus Christi or are otherwise named in one the honor and glory of one of Christ’s titles.

THIS SACRED MEAL Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Each of the readings includes a blessing and a sharing of food. They remind us of the central place of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the sharing of cookies and milk, pizza and beer, loaves and fishes, bread and wine.

When we prepare a meal for our family, our friends, even strangers, we always put something of ourselves into the preparation and the meal itself.

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us of what God put into the preparation for this meal that we celebrate today. We share this sacred meal and are transformed as we remember the death of Jesus and the sacrifice that nurtures our faith, sustains our lives, and supports our work.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ – Corpus Christi.

The first reading relates the priest Melchizedek’s bringing out gifts of bread and wine and blessing Abram.

The last line of the reading records Abram’s response: “Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.” Like Abram, we have been given many gifts, surely not least being the Eucharist.

Our response, like Abram, must be to tithe ourselves, to share those gifts with others. We proclaim the death of the Lord when we are the “body that is for [others].” Death is in giving of ourselves. If we dare to share in the sublime gift of Jesus’ Body and Blood, then we must also dare to die to ourselves and share our own abundance with others. Gift demands response.

Sublime gift demands ultimate response—dying to ourselves so that we might share Eucharistic life with the world.

Etched in the base of the chalice my pastor presented to me on the occasion of my priestly ordination is: “Imitate the Mystery you Celebrate.” How fitting this charge is for all of us, especially priests. I am so grateful to you, our faithful parishioners, for the way in which we pray the Mass here in our parish. It is the Work of God and the Work of the Faithful. It is not always easy and requires sacrifice from all.

When we imitate the mystery of the Eucharist, every aspect of our lives is understood as sacrifice and thanksgiving. As stewards of our Time, Talent, and Treasure we give of our time and resources in response to God’s Love for us and Jesus’ sacrifice for us. May God continue to bless us so that we in turn might continue to be a blessing to others through our prayer, service and sharing.

This solemnity also provides an opportunity for us to review some “housekeeping details”. As Roman Catholics we believe the Eucharist to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This is not an easy teaching for us and yet it remains the most central for us. The Sunday Sabbath and the frequent reception of Holy Communion is what makes us Roman Catholic. This is a basic teaching and a precept of our church. Making time for Sunday Mass in our new Millennium culture can be trying, especially when trying to organize family members with lots of activities.

Yet, the Eucharist is the center of our Catholic Life and from it flows all else in our daily/weekly routines. Coming to Mass a few minutes early is a good thing to find a place to sit, gaining composure for the celebration that is to begin.

Processing forward for the reception of Holy Communion is a time to prepare for the encounter of Christ entering into our body. We should avoid greeting people along the way and shaking hands. There is ample time later for such community building gestures. A profound bow before approaching the minister is appropriate and a reminder of our deference to the Lord who is before us. Lastly, remaining for the final blessing and dismissal concludes our communal act of prayer and praise. We have made tremendous progress these past years. I dare say reminding ourselves is always a good thing. I must congratulate those who worship regularly in our parish. I am always so edified by the way in which we pray together in unison, not rushed or too slow…really prayerful. Thanks for all that you do to make our celebration of Mass prayerful and inviting.

The Martha Mary Guild of the Parish of Saint Mary On May 15th, members of the Martha Mary Board gathered at Nonna’s Restaurant to celebrate their annual “In and Out Luncheon”. This is a time-honored practice to welcome new Board members and to thank “retiring” members. The Apostleship of the Sea of the United States of America (AOS-USA) is pleased to confirm that our two organizations have formed an alliance wherein Catholic Cruises and Tours (CC&T) will source all of their priests for cruises and tours through AOS-USA. The alliance between our two organizations ensures that, by our organizations working together, Catholics sailing on cruises will have priests ministering to them that are vetted by AOS-USA and certified as priests in good standing by their respective Competent Authorities.

Help support our Priest program onboard our cruise lines. Our responsibility is to vet each Priest that boards any of our over 1000 cruises. So that Catholics can feel comfortable knowing that they can take their FAITH ON A JOURNEY. By running our bulletin announcements you will be helping us continue our efforts and making sure that Catholics can attend Mass daily on their journey.

St. Anthony of Padua’s Music Ministry presents Part VI of their Recital Series A Taste of Opera on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 4 p.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 121 Bridge Avenue, Red Bank (732) 747-0813.

Admission $10 available at the parish office or at the door the day of the Recital. Church is handicapped accessible.

Saint Mary Parish Sewing Circle Next meeting Tuesday, June 25 at 1 pm The ministry meets in Meeting Room #11 twice a month (Meetings are held the nd 2 and 4th Tuesday of each month from 1- 3 pm.
