Corpus Christi

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is celebrated on the second Sunday after Pentecost, or two months after Easter Sunday. This day reaffirms the mystery of our Catholic faith in the transubstantiation. That is, that the bread and wine offered in the holy sacrifice of the Mass become the body and blood of Christ. As noted in the Council of Trent,

"the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.”

This is a fundamental belief of our Catholic faith and one that sets us apart from other some Christian denominations. It is important to remember that today, and every day, Jesus is present in all the tabernacles of the world, and at every Catholic Eucharistic celebration.

As the Solemnity occurs on a Sunday, attendance at Mass is obligatory. The singing of the sequence (after the Epistle and before the Alleluia) is optional on this day, although highly encouraged, especially in communities that bear the name of Corpus Christi or are otherwise named in the honor and glory of one of the titles of Jesus.

Charles

Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs,

d. 1886

Charles Lwanga was the assistant to the master of pages in the court of King Mwanga of Uganda. Joseph Mukasa, a Catholic, was his superior. Mukasa chastised the king for his murder of a Protestant missionary, as well as for the king’s homosexuality and his corruption of the young pages. This served to intensify the king’s hatred of Catholics and Joseph Mukasa was ordered slain by the king.

Charles, having been under instruction in the Catholic faith, asked for and received baptism on the day that Mukasa was killed. For his own unwillingness to submit to immoral acts and his defense of the other pages, Lwanga and fourteen other pages who were Christian were sent to a prison. Enroute, three of the pages, including Lwanga, were murdered, burned to death along with two soldiers.

During this persecution, some one hundred people were killed, including one young catechist speared to death by King Mwanga himself. Other martyrs included tribal chiefs and judges.

St. Charles Lwanga, together with twenty-one other martyrs, was canonized in 1964 by Pope Paul VI. He has been named the patron of African youth. He, and his companion martyrs are honored by a memorial on June 3.

Charles' message today: What strong faith this young man had! Knowing that it would probably lead to his own martyrdom, he persevered in his request for baptism. Then he stood up to the king, defending himself and others against what he knew to be wrong. Read More HERE.

“In the beginning I was trying to go it alone. I was reading the Bible by myself, and even though it’s a very strong time and emotional time to sit and read the Bible, I learned that you can’t go it alone. You need community. To be part of the Catholic Church is that bigger part that was missing.” – Kyle

Being a Catholic means being part of a spiritual family. Often, it can be your flesh-andblood family, or it can be a close friend who invites you to “come and see.” As you enter the Church, the parish community and the RCIA Program will walk with you on your journey of faith.

Jesus is on the move! Four small groups of young adults are in the midst of an epic journey which began at the north, south, east, and west edges of the United States. They are journeying with Jesus in the Eucharist across our whole country, blessing over 6,000 miles of our nation in the shape of a cross. This is the first ever National Eucharistic Pilgrimage one of the largest Eucharistic processions in history. Come and meet Jesus on the road!

Quo vadis for June 2. .

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate The Solemnity Of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ also known as Corpus Christi Sunday. In fact, few of us will be challenged literally to put the proverbial collar around the cat. But all of us, through baptism, truly are challenged to have the same self-giving stance as Jesus. Eucharist is the centerpiece of our lives, challenging us: our identity is our mission—self-giving. This Solemnity provides us an opportunity to reflect on what Eucharist is for us as disciples of the Lord. The church teaches us that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. This teaching shapes our approach when we come for mass, when we are in the nave of the church building in the presence of the Most Blessed Sacrament reserved for the sick, dying (viaticum) and adoration in the tabernacle. This teaching also shapes how we prepare ourselves to come for mass: how we dress, what time we arrive, are we respectful of others, do we remain until the final blessing? When we truly believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, then our actions and attitudes reflect that true presence. The communion procession is a time for us to be intensely focused on the fact that God is coming to us in this sacrament. Our reverence and respect for the awesomeness of this sacrament will help to inspire and teach our young people. May Christ continue to be made present in our midst through the Eucharist that we faithfully celebrate together.

We hosted a “New Parishioner Orientation” a few weeks ago. There were 25 new families represented…the largest single gathering of my tenure. I am grateful to our parish team for overseeing this important opportunity for shar

ing faith and the expectations of being a registered active parishioner of our parish. I am told that there are another 25 households in the process of registering here in our parish. Participation is a requirement to fully new parishioner registration in our parish. We have also received a substantial stack of change of address notifications (from the Light up a Memory and Christmas mailings). Most moved out of the area; a few moved to towns surrounding 07722; several moved to new residences within 07722. It is very important that we maintain accurate records. Please help us when you change address or other contact information, specifically email addresses.

We continue to develop and expand the Baptismal Formation Process to better serve our parishioners. Most recently we are beginning to add hospitality ministers to assist on the day of baptisms. This has been received very positively. It is another way in which we see Jesus in others. Let us continue to welcome and support those who present their children for baptism and faith formation/religious education.

During the Month of June we reflect on the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Mercy, Forgiveness, Love is what Jesus offers to us as we grow in faith and recognize the need for spiritual and personal growth. Sometimes we are challenged with engaging one another in order to see the broader picture…what God might be calling us to discern. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
