Ascension Thursday and Pentecost - Why are they where they are?

The Solemnity of the Ascension, traditionally celebrated 40 days after Easter, is as such to make symmetry with the 40 days of Lent that precede the Sacred Paschal Triduum. The Solemnity of Pentecost, which occurs on the 50th day after Easter, allows for a novena (9 days of prayer) to be observed between the two celebrations. It also makes the Vigil of Pentecost occurring “Seven Times Seven” days after Easter.

At least, that is what we are used to. In the United States, the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia observe Ascension Thursday as a Holy Day of Obligation. This includes: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. In all other US provinces, the Solemnity is transferred to and replaces the 7th Sunday of Easter. While this may allow a greater convenience to the faithful, especially in those areas of the country where priests are at an even greater shortage and parishes are many miles apart, the symbolism of the numbers falls to the wayside.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The paschal candle, blessed at the Easter Vigil, carried in procession into the darkened church, and aflame with the light of Christ to be passed hand to hand to renew our baptism, burns for the fifty days of Easter whenever we gather as Christ’s risen body. In the last fifty years, we have grown to see this candle as the sign of Christ’s enduring presence with us.

Before then, it was often seen more as a kind of signpost pointing backwards to events in Christ’s life. Therefore, in some places, on the fortieth day after Easter, in order to portray the disappearance of Jesus at the Ascension, the candle was hidden.

Now we see the paschal candle as a sign of the great baptismal season of grace and it remains in a prominent place throughout the entire fifty days. We do know of some churches that did not hide the candle after the Ascension. In England before the Reformation, the candle was left in place for fifty days, since on Pentecost Eve there was a vigil, and the candle was used to consecrate the waters of the font. In Salisbury cathedral, the candle was thirty-six feet high, and in Westminster Abbey weighed over three hundred pounds. On Pentecost, the candles were melted to make tapers for the funerals of the poor.

During the month of May, our students had the pleasure of planting flowers in the urns at the entrances to the Spiritual Center and Parish Hall. As we all know, young children love to play and get their hands dirty. They had such a wonderful time digging in the soil to plant the flowers.

Our children would like to thank The Parish of St. Mary for including us in this project. They had a great time helping and can’t wait to do it again next year!

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Most often when we think of living the paschal mystery we think in terms of the concrete selfsurrendering acts we undertake in order to live the dying and rising mystery of Christ.

The gospel for this Sunday affords us an opportunity to reflect on a completely different kind of self-surrender—that of giving ourselves over to God in the intimacy of prayer. Just as Jesus’ prayer reveals us as sharing in Jesus’ glory and unity with the Father, so will our own prayer reveal both our union with God and our union with each other. As Jesus was prompted in his prayer to look not to himself but to the well-being of his disciples, so does our prayer draw us out of ourselves toward God and concern for others. Thus, prayer itself is a kind of self-sacrificing surrender for others.

As I write this communique, I prepare for a surgical procedure on Thursday, 30 May to address/correct some issues connected with sleep apnea which I developed in the past few years. I am told that the procedure will be 4 hours or less and that I should return home the same day. There will be a period of convalescence following the surgery. It is estimated that for 2-4 weeks I will have limited use of my right hand and arm so that the points of entry may heal properly. I am hoping for the more optimistic timing of convalescence; however, we trust in God’s providential care. During this time Reverend Msgr. Casimir Ladzinski, distinguished

retired priest of our Diocese of Trenton, will be staying with me in the parish house and covering sacramental responsibilities for two weeks. I am grateful to all during this time and ask for a special remembrance in your prayer especially during this time of convalescence.

The month of June is dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. During the month we observe the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, The Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Solemnity of Saints Peter & Paul. Next weekend, the Solemnity of Pentecost which concludes the Easter Season, we will print a report of our 2019 Easter Collection. Please take time to review it carefully and remember those listed in your prayer. Your generous sharing enables us to continue our work of providing for the needs of our parishioners, maintaining our customs as well as evangelizing new members for our church community. THANK YOU! Next weekend is the Solemnity of Pentecost when we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles -- thus inaugurating the Church.

This past week our parish transferred $3,000 from our stewardship income to support the activities of St. Mary Parish Charitable Appeals & Outreach.
