Fortnight for Freedom 2017: Freedom for Mission - June 21 to July 4, 2017

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has again designated a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21 to July 4 to focus on religious freedom. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the freedom for us to live out our mission. "We are called to follow Christ as missionary disciples by seeking the truth, serving others, and living our faith in all that we do." TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the heart of today's solemnity is a Eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a procession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Communion, the procession through the streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide.

Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment.

"Before our mind's eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present." Originally this feast was on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reform of 1970, its title was expanded from "Corpus Christi" to "The Body and Blood of Christ" and in the United States it was moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Even though Easter season ended two weeks ago, this beautiful feast is aglow with Easter light.

Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Bible study for women that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with Christ. Through personal study and small group discussions, the group helps to link our everyday challenges with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church.

Are you interested in getting together with other women to explore your faith?

You may or may not have knowledge of Scripture. If you would like to discover and/or deepen your relationship with Jesus Christ as well as explore how the Scriptures apply to your everyday life, this is the program for you.

All women are invited to consider joining Walking with Purpose at The Parish of Saint Mary.

The 2017-2018 program will meet weekly September 2017 through May 2018 (calendar still yet to be determined and will reflect off days based on school vacations and holidays). Babysitting is available.

Two Programs will run simultaneously - offerings for the upcoming 2017-2018 year: Opening Your Heart This 22-week foundational course is designed for women new to WWP as well as those with more Bible study experience. Explore the Holy Spirit, the Eucharist, your friendship with Christ, forgiveness, prayer, suffering and dealing with life’s challenges with following Jesus more closely.

Touching the Divine This 22- week course designed to help you get to know Jesus more intimately, reflect on Christ’s personality through the Gospel of John.

Grow in your understanding of what it means to be God’s beloved daughter.

Ascension Press Bible Study Program this Fall at the Parish of Saint Mary Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom

by Jeff Cavins and Sarah Christmyer Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom, a 20 week program, shows how Christ's Kingdom on earth is empowered to carry out Jesus’ work in the world. The book of Acts shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and restoring outcasts in the same way that Jesus did on earth. The Acts of the Apostles provides an historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul’s letters in particular come alive in a new way when they are read within the context of the Acts narrative.

In this program you will: • See how the Gospel witness spread outward in waves, from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria, and finally to the ends of the earth.

• Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living the life of Christ, and learn how these apply to us today.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is far too easy for us to file out of our pews or chairs into the Communion line, receive, return, leave after Mass is over, and get on with our lives. The food and drink that Jesus offers us in this liturgical celebration requires of us conscious preparation, deliberate partaking, and ongoing savoring by how we live. Eucharist changes us to live more holy and self-giving lives. We can’t just put on a costume or cloak of being Jesus’ followers; sharing in the body and blood of Christ means that we share in Jesus’ life of self-giving. This is the only way to eternal life. During this Year of the Eucharist, let us be ever more focused on our need to commune with the Lord and our God’s invitation to Come to the Feast!

Corpus Christi provides us an opportunity to think about our own understanding of the Eucharist…Jesus truly present to us…as we continue to respond to the command, “Do this in remembrance of me.” Our participation in the Eucharist requires preparation. It is important that we are ready to encounter the Lord as we come together for the Mass. We prepare by determining in advance what Mass we will attend; arriving in a timely manner, that is, a few minutes before the start of the Mass in order to settle down and quietly center our thoughts; joyfully participating in the prayers, songs and gestures; remaining until the final blessing; and, lastly, being charitable in the parking lot as we make our way home. Each of us is called to imitate the mystery that we celebrate. That is, to become more and more

like Jesus who gave his life for the many.

You and I are called to share of ourselves, not from our excess, but from our very wanting.

When we truly embrace the Eucharist as the fundamental act of the Catholic Community, then everything else we do or strive to become is rooted in the Paschal Mystery of Christ. Let us strive to continue to become more and more grounded in the Eucharist as we build God’s Kingdom in our midst.

Today is the civic observance of Father’s Day. We pray that Saint Joseph will serve as a model for all of our Fathers, Grandfathers, Great-Grandfathers, Godfathers and Expectant Fathers. Thank you for embracing your vocation of Fatherhood and for modeling that for your children. Let us continue to pray for all of these men as they strive to live their vocation.

We continue to make progress with registration/re-registration for our Parish Religious Education Program. We need this information NOW in order to provide for the children and their families. Our staff is so very grateful for all those who register now so that we can order materials, secure licensing, recruit staffing and reserve space so that we can provide the very best religious formation and education.

During the month of June, the universal church turns its gaze toward the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus as THE ultimate image of mercy and forgiveness. In this inspiring true story, a mother (Jennifer Garner) searches for hope and a cure when she discovers her daughter has a rare disease. The movie is based on Miracles from Heaven by Christy Beam, which recounts the true story of her young daughter who had a near-death experience and was later cured of an incurable disease.
