New Jersey Independent Victims Compensation Program opens June 15 As had been announced in February of this year, the Diocese of Trenton – along with the other Roman Catholic dioceses in New Jersey – has established an Independent Victim Compensation Program (IVCP) to compensate those who, as minors, were sexually abused by a priest or deacon of the Diocese. The IVCP will be open to claims beginning June 15. The IVCP is independently administered by experienced victim compensation experts Kenneth R. Feinberg and Camille S. Biros. Mr. Feinberg was the plan administrator for the federal 9/11 victim compensation program, as well as the Boston Marathon bombing compensation program. The IVCP will handle the submission, evaluation and resolution of individual claims, and will operate independently of the Diocese or any Church-affiliated institution. The administrators of the IVCP will have complete autonomy to determine the eligibility of a claim with the guidelines of the established Protocol. The amount of compensation for those who make a claim will be determined by the IVCP administrators. All victims – no matter when the abuse occurred – are eligible to participate, and all matters will be handled confidentially. Victims of clergy sexual abuse of a minor can begin the process of utilizing the program by going to www.njdiocesesivcp.com and reviewing the Protocol for submitting a claim. Anyone who was sexually victimized as a minor by a priest or deacon of the Diocese is strongly encouraged to participate in the IVCP. The Diocese also asks that anyone who knows of someone who was abused to pass along this information to the victim so that he or she is aware of the IVCP.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity The mystery of the Holy Trinity, one God in three persons, is something we celebrate and are familiar with. We begin all things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Mass, in particular, begins and ends with the sign of the cross. We baptize using the Trinitarian formula, and bless ourselves thusly every time we enter a sacred space. As such, the fact that we dedicate a Sunday to the Trinity is no mystery to the faithful. But WHY we do it, and WHEN we do it has some significance. In the early church, there was no special feast day dedicated to the trinity. However, as the belief in the triune God is a core tenet of Catholic faith, there were many devotions to the Trinity, and during the 11th century, it was petitioned to have a special feast. This was rejected by Pope Alexander II, with his rationale that the daily glorification of the Trinity through the Trinitarian blessings and doxological recitations (the “through Him and with Him…in the unity of the Holy Spirit” that concludes the liturgy of the Eucharist, and the Gloria Patri included at the end of psalms and other prayers) was sufficient. Later, in the 14th century, Pope John XXII did indeed order the feast to be celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and in the modern era after the second Vatican Council, has the rank of a Solemnity. This date was chosen as it was the Sunday following the fulfillment of the promise Christ made to his disciples. The Father sent the Son, and through the intercession of the Son, thus followed the Spirit. As the Trinity was so recognized by Christ’s own disciples, so too would that now be celebrated by all the faithful.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today's feast, extending a dimension of Easter joy into Ordinary Time, reminds us that every aspect of worship centers on the mystery of God in three persons. At baptism, we are initiated into Christ and the Spirit. The Creed we recite at Mass every Sunday has its roots in the ancient celebration of baptism, when a new believer was questioned at the edge of the waters of the font with three questions: Do you believe in God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit? Three questions, three affirmations, three immersions into the saving waters. Because every liturgy abounds with references to the Trinity, not only in words but in blessings by the sign of the cross, this feast was not easily accepted into the calendar. Pope Alexander in the eleventh century remarked that the liturgy is so laden with praise of the Trinity that there was no need for a special feast. Two hundred years later, while in exile in France, Pope John XXII proclaimed the feast, but it was not until 1911 that Pope St. Pius X gave it status as a solemnity. A favorite image in art for today is the Icon of the Trinity, showing three glorious winged men seated at a table laden with bread and a cup of wine. It recalls Abraham's hospitality to angels and gives expression to the inner life of God, a life lived in relationship, a life poured out in abundance whenever Christians gather at the table of the Eucharist to give praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Spirit. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. As difficult as it is to grasp the mystery of God’s triune majesty, it is even more difficult to grasp that God loves us enough to share divine life and glory with us. Living the paschal mystery means that we are faithful witnesses to the God within. Sometimes rather than witnessing through doing good works, we need to witness simply by appreciating ourselves and others for the wonderful gift of God’s presence that we are. The readings this week challenge us to become more deeply aware of God’s presence in creation, in Jesus, and in ourselves. Then allow that awareness to overflow in thanksgiving and praise that gives God glory. Last weekend the Liturgical Season of Easter concluded with the Solemnity of Pentecost. The double alleluias were added to the dismissal of the Mass to remind us that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the gift of God and the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to be with us until the end of time. We now begin the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time. I am grateful to all those who have assisted us in preparing the Liturgical Rites throughout the Easter Season. If you are interested in learning more about what it takes to prepare these rites for our parish community, please contact Andrew Macirowski. Preparations are being made for our Summer Sessions of Religious Education. These programs are increasingly popular among our parish families and have demonstrated to me greater retention of information following the two week module. We need to strengthen the commitment of all to participate in Sunday Mass Regularly as part of this summer program. We will continue to strengthen and develop the intergenerational components to assist our parish families. As we conclude our fiscal year 30 June 2019, I am grateful to all those who review our financial transactions regularly and those who assist in budget preparations for the coming fiscal year. This year we will be making the final change to our parish staffing as was recommended in 2014. These past five years, the finance council and I have tried to postpone this
final position elimination; however, this coming year we could no longer defer the inevitable. Ms. Ellen Fink will conclude her time of employment with our parish community 30 June 2019. Due to personal needs, she is not able to apply for the new position that has been posted. I am grateful to Ellen for her service to our parish community. We have prepared a “separation agreement” outlining the dissolution of the position and the compensation that we are offering to our coworker. Take a moment in the coming week to stop by and thank Ellen for her kindness & service. We have received many (more than 35) applications for the new position. Our Pastoral Associate for Temporal Administration will review them, conduct some phone interviews and then some face to face interviews with other staff and parishioners present. Once they have determined the top 3 candidates, there will be a final interview in which I will participate. During this time of transition I ask for your kindness and cooperation. Many thanks for your prayer and kindnesses during my period of convalescence following surgery. I was able to attend Mass last weekend at 12:00 noon. It was good to be with you, celebrating the Solemnity of Pentecost and receiving Holy Communion. I am grateful to Msgr. Casey for his presence and his fraternal care. He is a good priest and a good friend. I have had my follow up appointment with the surgeon and he is pleased with the progress being made. I must continue to use the arm sling for a longer period as a pre-caution. I hope that the device can be activated early July which will begin a two month period of observation leading to some final adjustments. I hope to be back to full responsibilities, beginning with daily Mass, this coming week and upcoming weekend. Please pray for those priests of our Diocese of Trenton who will begin their first term as pastors of parishes throughout Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean & Burlington Counties. This coming week Msgr. Troiano and I will join His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton and other Priest leaders to facilitate a time of prayer and preparation for these new pastors. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
