We begin all things in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Mass, in particular, begins and ends with the sign of the cross. We baptize using the Trinitarian formula, and bless ourselves thusly every time we enter a sacred space. As such, the fact that we dedicate a Sunday to the Trinity is no mystery to the faithful. But WHY we do it, and WHEN we do it has some significance.

In the early church, there was no special feast day dedicated to the trinity. However, as the belief in the triune God is a core tenet of Catholic faith, there were many devotions to the Trinity, and during the 11th century, it was petitioned to have a special feast. This was rejected by Pope Alexander II, with his rationale that the daily glorification of the Trinity through the Trinitarian blessings and doxological recitations (the “through him and with him…in the unity of the holy spirit” that concludes the liturgy of the eucharist, and the gloria patri included at the end of psalms and other prayers) was sufficient.

The Son is not the Father, the Father is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father, etc.…but all are God. Later, in the 14th century, Pope John XXII did indeed order the feast to be celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and in the modern era after the second Vatican Council, has the rank of a Solemnity. This date was chosen as it was the Sunday following the fulfillment of the promise Christ made to his disciples. The Father sent the Son, and through the intercession of the Son, thus followed the Spirit. As the Trinity was so recognized by Christ’s own disciples, so too would that now be celebrated by all the faithful.

“Easter Duty” The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5-6, 2022 to Trinity Sunday, June 12, 2022. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

St. Gregory the Great, pope during Augustine’s adult life, had a vision of re-evangelizing Anglo-Saxon England. To accomplish this, he selected about thirty of the monks from his monastery in Rome, including their prior, Augustine. This group set out for England in 596.

When the group reached the English Channel, they received warnings that the Anglo-Saxons were a wild and fierce people and the monks would be in great danger if they crossed over the Channel to England. The monks asked Augustine to seek reassurance from the pope, so Augustine returned to Rome where St. Gregory encouraged him and his monks to continue with their mission, promising them that he was certain that the English were ready for conversion.

Volunteers Needed for Jail & Prison Ministry Did you know that inmates in the prisons in NJ have not had Catholic religious services since March of 2020 due to COVID restrictions?

That’s more than 2 years without seeing a priest, receiving Holy Communion, or going to the Sacrament of Confession. The prisons are gradually reopening to pastoral visitors, but many of our long-time volunteers have passed away, retired, or moved away. We need to rebuild the ministry. There is urgent need for Priests, Deacons, Lay Ministers of the Eucharist, and possibly RCIA Instructors. Date/Time: Tuesday, July 12, 2022 (6:30pm–8:30pm) JULIAN OF NORWICH A Woman for Our Time In the midst of the horrendous suffering of our time, a woman from the Middle Ages appears speaking God’s words, “I shall make all things well which are not well, and you will see it.” Julian of Norwich wrote her most profound work about the “unutterable love of God” in 1393, but we need to listen to her now, more than six centuries later, because she is truly a woman and mystic for our time.
