Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Worship & Music

Corpus Christi

Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org

Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org

The Solemnity of Corpus Christi is celebrated on the second Sunday after Pentecost, or two months after Easter Sunday. This day reaffirms our mystery of our Catholic faith in the transubstantiation. That is, that the bread and wine offered in the holy sacrifice of the Mass become the body and blood of Christ. As noted in the Council of Trent, "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.”

This is a fundamental belief of our Catholic faith and one that sets us apart from some other Christian denominations. It is important to remember that today, and every day, Jesus is present in all the tabernacles of the world, and at every Catholic Eucharistic celebration.

In some places, a procession is held today, similar to the one on Holy Thursday, wherein the Blessed Sacrament is carried through the streets of the town to a smaller church or chapel, where benediction and/or adoration may take place.

As the Solemnity occurs on a Sunday, attendance at Mass is obligatory. The singing of the sequence (after the Epistle and before the Alleluia) is optional on this day, although highly encouraged, especially in communities that bear the name of Corpus Christi or are otherwise named in the honor and glory of one of the titles of Jesus.

Saint of the Week:

Junípero Serra, Priest, 1713-1784

No person had more influence on the settlement of California than Padre Junípero Serra. He was born Miguel José Serra to parents of humble means, living in Petra on the Mediterranean island of Majorca. His early education took place on the island at the Franciscan convent of San Bernardino. The church there had several small chapels on either side of the main altar dedicated to saints. Young Miguel developed a strong love for these saints while attending Mass, and their names, including San Diego, San Juan Capistrano, Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, San Francisco, later became the names of the cities and missions... My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate The Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is far too easy for us to file out of our pews or chairs into the Communion line, receive, return, leave after Mass is over, and get on with our lives. The food and drink that Jesus offers us in this liturgical celebration requires of us conscious preparation, deliberate partaking, and ongoing savoring by how we live. Eucharist changes us to live more holy and self-giving lives. We can’t just put on a costume or cloak of being Jesus’ followers; sharing in the body and blood of Christ means that we share in Jesus’ life of self-giving. This is the only way to eternal life. During this Year of the Eucharist let us be ever more focused on our need to commune with the Lord and our God’s invitation to Come to the Feast!

Corpus Christi provides us an opportunity to think about our own understanding of the Eucharist…Jesus truly present to us…as we continue to respond to the command, “Do this in remembrance of me. Our participation in the Eucharist requires preparation. It is important that we are ready to encounter the Lord as we come together for the mass. We prepare by determining in advance what mass we will attend; arriving in a timely manner…that is, a few minutes before the start of the mass in order to settle down and quietly center our thoughts; joyfully participating in the prayers, songs and gestures; remaining until the final blessing; and, lastly, being charitable in the parking lot as we make our way home. Each of us is called to imitate the mystery that we celebrate. That is, to become more and more like Jesus who gave his life for the many. You and I are called to share of ourselves, not from our excess, but from our very wanting. When we truly embrace the Eucharist as the funda-

mental act of the Catholic Community, then everything else we do or strive to become is rooted in the Paschal Mystery of Christ. Let us strive to continue to become more and more grounded in the Eucharist as we build God’s Kingdom in our midst.

This weekend we welcome family members and friends of Father Mike as he gives thanks to almighty God for 50 years of priestly ministry in our Diocese of Trenton. I invite you to come and pray with Father Mike on Saturday at the 5:00pm Mass. There will be a simple reception following the mass to greet him and offer your thanks for his ministry among us. May there be many more years of Priestly Ministry among us, Father Mike.

This week (13 June) is the Memorial of Saint Anthony of Padua. Mass will be celebrated in the chapel at 9:00am. We welcome those who keep the novena in their homes to come and honor this Doctor of our Church. Next weekend is the civic observance of Father’s Day. We pray that Saint Joseph will serve as a model for all of our Fathers, Grandfathers, GreatGrandfathers, Godfathers and Expectant Fathers. Thank you for embracing your vocation of Fatherhood and for modeling that for your children. Let us continue to pray for all of these men as they strive to live their vocation.

During the month of June the universal church turns its gaze toward the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus as THE ultimate image of mercy and forgiveness. Let us pray for an increased awareness of the need to be agents of healing and reconciliation. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.
