The Importance of Relating Text Last week’s article was about the importance of text in a musical composition, and how one must be careful when choosing a piece, to ensure the text is clear, does not call belief into question, and strengthens faith. This week, we will look at the importance of the text as it relates to a particular day. Appropriate music for a liturgy can sometimes be crystal clear. A few examples: “O Come All Ye Faithful” - Christmas “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” - Easter “Gift of Finest Wheat” - Communion Other times it can be a grey area. Many hymns and songs such as “O God Our Help in Ages Past”, “All are Welcome”, “Let us Go to the Altar”, etc can be used almost anytime, but depending on the text, are more appropriate at some celebrations than at others. Therefore, careful attention must be paid to the readings (1st & 2nd readings, psalm, and Gospel) and propers of the day (Entrance, Offertory & Communion antiphons and their psalms), and the text of the hymns and songs, to make sure they align, both liturgically and thematically. It is not only about finding appropriate music, but the MOST appropriate music for the day. So the next time one thinks, “we should sing this particular song”, or “we sure have heard that one a lot lately”, the reasons for such is the marrying of the music to the readings and propers, for a profound worship experience.

Mass Etiquette: Things To Do And Not Do While at Mass Cell phones should never be used in Mass for calls or texting. The exceptions are emergencies (big ones, not everyday ones) and if you do use one, please walk out of church to do so. Also, if you are using the phone for readings or prayers, this is appropriate, but try to be discreet. Please be quiet while in church. Once you enter the sanctuary – it is not the time or place to visit with those around you. If you must talk do so as quietly and briefly as possible. Remember that your conversation might be disturbing someone who is in prayer, which is much more important. Sssshhhhhhhh. From: www.aggiecatholicblog.org

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Is Jesus a carpenter or a prophet for us? How we believe will determine how we project who we are—the body of Christ. People will look at us and see the externals; we are laborers and professionals, town workers and church workers. It took mighty deeds on Jesus’ part to astonish the townspeople in his native place enough to ask the question about his identity. It is only when our own words and deeds go beyond what people expect of us that we will astonish our families, friends, and acquaintances into asking similar questions of us: “Who is this person?” “Where did this person get all this?” We are anointed prophets in baptism. We receive the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. We are empowered to do the mightiest of mighty deeds: be the body of Christ, bringing Christ’s risen presence to our broken world. What will people say of us? We will shock them into taking a second look at our identity only when we live as Jesus did—giving ourselves for others. Our nation celebrated another anniversary of our independence last week. Is it just another day? Do we understand our independence in light of the evening news? Do we truly realize what a blest nation we are and honor those who have and continue to fight for our freedom? This summer let us re-kindle that spirit of patriotism that gave birth to our country. Let us, by our example, show to those new immigrants and our children and young people the pride we have in being called Americans. This weekend we welcome families who are
participating in our July Summer Intensive Module. During the months of July and August we will offer our Summer Intensive Religious Education Program. Each module is two weeks followed by Intergenerational Sessions throughout the year. The expectation is that families will come regularly to Sunday Mass (Saturday Eve Anticipatory Mass also) as a family so that the children can participate in the Liturgy of the Word Dismissal. This experience begins to teach by example the importance of the Lord’s Day, the Sunday Sabbath, and introduces worship to our children in a language that is welcoming to them. I am very grateful to all those who sacrifice generously to help us make all of these options a reality for our parish community. Together let us catechize and evangelize our parishioners and all those who seek a deeper relationship with God. During the Summer Intensive Program there will be limited access to our Parish buildings in compliance with the “Safe Environment Guidelines” established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and adopted by the Diocese of Trenton. All those who are assisting with the program will be wearing their identification cards. Thank you for your cooperation. Congratulations to all of our GRADUATES: from College, High School, Elementary School, Kindergarten…. To the Graduates and their Families I offer you my prayers as you move into the next phase of your life. Stay true to who you are and what you value. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Dear Parish of Saint Mary: "One person is of more value than a world." St. Mary Euphrasia Thank you for your part in making the Collier Youth Services 2018 Gala truly a night to remember. Through your generosity and support we raised over $300,000! We were privileged to recognize this year's honorees, the School Family Foundation and Bill Rubenstein. Their dedication, support and belief in Collier's mission is testimony to their commitment to providing A Time and Place for children who might otherwise be lost in the chaos of the times. Proceeds from this event will support Collier's mission to empower young people to overcome the adversity in their lives and to grow toward their potential in an environment that promotes belonging, dignity, and hope. Collier's diverse programs include alternative education for students with emotional and behavioral health needs; a therapeutic residential program for adolescents and young women recovering from trauma and in need of a home away from home for a time, and a summer day camp for local children living in poverty. At our gala, we shared a video focused on the young women transitioning to adulthood who live in our Collier House in Keyport. If you were unable to attend, or would like to see this impactful video again, please visit this link: https://youtube/ k04clgnipY8. Our Residency Program gives young women a safe home while they learn to move beyond the trauma in their lives and obtain the skills they need to become independent, healthy adults.

Isn’t Natural Family Planning just like Contraception for Catholics? — NO!! There is a BIG difference between Natural Family Planning (NFP) and contraception!! Contraception actively employs a drug, device or surgical procedure to inhibit or block the natural effects of the sexual act. It always strives to separate the bodily union of the man and woman from any possible procreative effects of that union. NFP teaches mutual respect of the spouses, always drawing them closer together in every way. NFP allows spouses to avoid conception by identifying the naturally occurring infertile times of the woman’s cycle when they have a serious reason to avoid conception…NFP can also help spouses achieve pregnancy, even, in some cases, when there are significant fertility issues…now that’s REAL family planning! Either way, Natural Family Planning always values fertility as a gift, never as a problem, works with the body, not against it, and respects God’s design for married love…On top of all that, it’s free, “organic”, and good for the environment! Be on the lookout for more information about NFP in the bulletin over the next few weeks leading up to Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, July 23-29. For more information about NFP education in our area, contact Peg Hensler 609-403-7156 or phensler@dioceseoftrenton.org. “Be Still and Know that I am God” Centering Prayer Date: Tuesday, July 17, 2018 - 7 -9:30 pm Fee: $25 - $50 (sliding scale) Praying With Music Date: Tuesday, July 24, 2018 - 7 -9:30 pm The Upper Room Spiritual Center Fee: $25 - $50 (sliding scale) is sponsored by the Ignation Contemplation: Graced Imagination that Diocese of Trenton.
