Spotlight on Music: Salve Regina One of four Marian chants are sung frequently throughout the church year. Traditionally, a hymn to the virgin is sung at the conclusion of Compline (Night Prayer), the last of the hours from the Liturgy of the Hours prayed each day. In common practice, Compline is usually a private occasion unless in a monastic setting where numbers of religious and/or laity would gather to pray the hours together. In some communities, semi-regular celebration of the hours takes place for the benefit of the faithful to attend.

In other areas, the Marian hymns are sung after the conclusion of Mass, at or prior to the clergy’s recession from the church proper sometimes every Mass on every Sunday, sometimes at “High Mass”, or perhaps on the first Sunday of the month.

The Salve Regina is the Marian anthem for Ordinary Time, more specifically the time between Pentecost Sunday and the first Sunday of Advent. The original text dates to the 12th Century and the (quite tuneful) chant melody is generally believed to be anonymous.

The text in Latin and its English translation are found below.

This text is also frequently said at the end of the Rosary, and sung at some Funeral services.

GOD'S PROVIDENCE Today's readings celebrate God's providence. No matter how wonderful (or heartbreaking) our relationships are, God always provides for us. No one cares for us the way God does.

Isaiah delights us with a deeply intimate image of God caring for us as a mother comforts her child. The prophet describes us not as the usual children of God, but as babies. We should not resist this image, but rejoice in it. Trusting in God's care, we can all let down our guard and rest like infants in the lap of our mother.

Saint Paul's trust in God allows him to be at peace like this. He boldly declares that no one can make troubles for him, because he has given himself completely to Jesus. And when Jesus sends his disciples out to preach and heal, he challenges them not to provide for themselves, but to let faith be their guide.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our own times we are not so conscious of personified evil as in the time of Jesus. Demons represent a worldview; God’s kingdom breaks in on this evil and establishes a new world order in which evil’s grasp is broken. The establishment of God’s reign is already an in-breaking of the final glory that will be ours—our “names are [already] written in heaven.” References to the abundance of the end times are captured in the “harvest” metaphor Jesus uses. Jesus looks at the harvest and sees abundance, fulfillment. Some of this abundance and fulfillment is surely realized in our own taking up of Jesus’ mission to bring peace, heal, and dispel evil. The challenge of the gospel is that we do not get so lost in doing Jesus’ mission that we forget being disciples— ambassadors—of Christ is in itself already an inbreaking of God’s reign. It is in Christ’s presence through us that peace and joy are spread. Living the paschal mystery means believing in what God has made us—ambassadors of Christ, members of his body. It means that we are as satisfied with the presence we bring as we are with the good that we can do. Mission is being sent to be Christ for others. Only when we act out of our identity can anything we do help establish God’s reign.

This past week we, as Americans, celebrated Independence Day. It is a great time for us to reflect on the many gifts and blessings we have received from those who have gone before us.

Let us continue to pray for our Religious Liberty as a cornerstone of our social order.

Independence Day reminds us that we are well into the summer months. Hard to comprehend that 2019 is half over! Where does the time go?

Take time to make the most of the summer months. We have had some very beautiful days and evenings to enjoy walks in the town parks or even here on the church property. Why not visit

the Grotto for some personal prayer time and solitude?

I continue to make good progress following surgery. I was cleared by the surgeon to return to full activities without restriction. Had some other tests that were previously scheduled and await the results.

Met with the medical team and representatives of “Inspire Therapy”, the device implanted in my body, to begin the process of activation. However, it seems as though the nerves have not yet healed from the surgery. So I will need to wait another 4-6 weeks to activate the device and enjoy the fruits of the surgery. Patience is my new mantra! Thanks for all of the cards, spiritual bouquets, prayers, food, and encouragement. It has been quite humbling. I made a quick overnight trip to Louisville Kentucky last weekend (Friday eve into Saturday back late eve) for the very untimely death of a college buddy.

There were about 10 of us from different parts of the country who were there and many others whose lives he touched throughout his career. I must confess that the whole experience was a bit unsettling. I am reminded that, “we know not the day nor the hour….”

Many thanks to all of our parishioners and benefactors for your generous and sacrificial stewardship to support the mission of the church here in our parish. It has been suggested to me that I point out that our increased offertory program has elicited a generous response which now covers the nearly the entire amount of fund raising. While the bottom line remains stable the funding source through the Sunday Stewardship offerings is stable and regular so that we can prepare adequately for our expenses and other liabilities. May God continue to reward you for your commitment to Christ and the Church as we build our parish community together. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

The July summer session begins July 22. When you bring your child that morning, please bring them into the theater in the Parish Center. At the end of each class day, students in grades 1-3 will be picked up in the theater, while students in grades 4-6 will be picked up in Madonna Hall. All students need to be signed out.

PARISH OFFICE VOLUNTEERS Our committed and busy parish staff appreciate some helping hands. If you have some hours a week to help us out at the parish office, please consider volunteering. Parishioners volunteer their time assisting with a variety of business office related tasks as needed. Volunteers provide a welcoming presence in responding to incoming phone calls and office visitors. Duties include answering the phone and assisting parishioners and visitors with Mass cards and questions. Basic office skills and professionalism are required as our office staff represents St. Mary Parish. Training is provided. Pictured above are some of the many “worker bees” who faithfully help run the annual Clothing/Linen Sale sponsored by the Martha Mary Guild, which will take place on Thursday, September 5, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, September 6, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, September 7, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a huge assortment of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes and accessories in Madonna Hall. The “Boutique”, which features designer and new clothes, “The Linen Loft” and the “Jewelry Corner” are located in the Church hall. Be sure to mark your calendars, because you won’t want to miss this big event!

Donations of clean, slightly used items, in good condition will be gratefully accepted in Madonna Hall starting on Saturday, August 24 until Sunday, September 1.

All proceeds from this annual sale benefit organizations that help women and children.
