Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org Saint Alphonsus Ligouri (August 1) Born in Italy on September 27, 1696, Alphonsus was a great theologian. At the University of Naples, Alphonsus received a doctorate in both canon and civil law by acclamation, at the age of 16, but he soon gave up the practice of law for apostolic activity. He was ordained a priest, and concentrated his pastoral efforts on popular parish missions, hearing confessions, and forming Christian groups.

He founded the Redemptorist congregation in 1732. It was an association of priests and brothers living a common life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, and working mainly in rural missions, far from city centers.

Alphonsus was made a bishop at the age of 66 and instituted pastoral reforms in his diocese. Among these were in the pulpit and confessional—replacing the pompous oratory of the time with simplicity, and treating the penitent with kindness rather than rigidity and scolding.

A prolific writer, Alphonsus is best known for his moral theology, but he also wrote well in the field of spiritual and dogmatic theology. His Glories of Mary is one of the great works on that subject, and his book Visits to the Blessed Sacrament went through 40 editions in his lifetime, greatly influencing the practice of this devotion in the Church. One of the most commonly prayed versions of the Stations of the Cross is attributed to him as well. He is considered a doctor of the church for his great work in moral theology, and is the patron saint of theologians and vocations.

Saint of the Week: Aloysius Gonzaga, Religious, 1568-1591 Aloysius was the oldest son and heir of the Marquis Ferrante of Castiglione who was in the service of Philip II of Spain. His father wished to see Aloysius become a military officer, but Aloysius had another idea in mind.

At about the age of seven, Aloysius had a spiritual awakening and began his day with regular prayers, including the Office of Mary and the Psalms. At nine, he was sent to Florence to be educated. By the time he was eleven, Aloysius was teaching the catechism to poor children and fasting three days a week as well as practicing other austerities.

After reading a book about the Jesuits’ experiences in the missions of India, Aloysius decided to enter the Society of Jesus.

(Supporting A Community with Kindness) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization where people from all over the world knit/crochet sacks and then donate them (with a bar of soap in each one) to homeless shelters, food pantries, veteran clinics, social service agencies and relief efforts. Since S.A.C.K. was founded in 2017, over 140,000 soap sacks have been donated globally!

The response to these soap sacks are overwhelmingly positive especially since people cannot purchase toiletry items such as soap with government subsidies such as food stamps. Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If most of us take some time to think about things, we would have to admit that the pressures of our everyday living tend to be our main focus. We are all concerned about calendars and schedules, bills and getting ahead, sickness and health. Our lives tend to be so busy that our immediate goal is to get through another day.

What would happen if we would truly take some time to think about what possesses us? It takes conscious effort to reverse the question and ask, To whom do our possessions belong? To whom do we belong? In some sense these are questions about priorities and putting God truly at the center of our lives. The answers must be more than an intellectual commitment to grow in our relationship with God and have God as our center. We must stop building larger storage barns and begin changing the way we live so that our priorities are evident. Practically speaking, this probably means settling for fewer possessions. But with God at the center, we really gain everything-eternal life.

Many thanks to all those who participated in the Grandparents Day Intergenerational session.

Thanks to Julia Cullen and those volunteers who assisted in offering the hospitality. Last weekend we welcomed representatives of the Jersey Shore Conference of Alumni from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend for Mass and a convivial for incoming freshman (class of 2026!) and their parents. Parishioners Mike and Maureen Staub coordinate this important opportunity for these young people and their families.

The Way in Which We Pray shows forth what we Believe. Thank you for being such good witnesses to the presence of Christ in our midst during our celebration of Eucharist.

Our regular food collection continues to improve.

The large bin in our gathering space serves as a subtle reminder inviting us to bring nonperishable food items for the poor and needy. You may bring your items whenever convenient for you. It need not be a specific weekend of the month. Some have even adopted the practice of having their children bring one item each week.

This is a great stewardship witness! There is always a need for peanut butter, jelly and boxed cereals. Thank you for your generous sharing so that we can assist in caring for the poor and needy.

There is also a box on our website’s online giving link. I have found it easier to make a gift each month, in addition to my weekly stewardship and mortgage/building fund contribution, for the poor and needy. This is another way to serve the most vulnerable in our midst. Whatever you choose, thank you!

Recently we have experience internet service interruptions as well as power outages. Some of this is weather related. Some of it is aging infrastructure.

Some of it has been poor planning with trees being planted directly under utility lines. I apologize for any inconvenience. I am most concerned that during these outages and until everything is re-set the emergency line is not operational for those experiencing a true emergency. This is something that is deeply troubling. We will continue to work on reasonable solutions. Thank you for understanding and patience.

As we continue our journey through the summer months make sure to take time for the Lord. Going to mass, whether here or while on vacation, is a big part of recreation during the summer months. It is also good to experience how other Roman Catholic Christians celebrate the Sacred Liturgy. Some of our parishioners have recently commented to me how much they appreciate how Have a great week. Catholic Charities News Catholic Charities provides addiction counseling, basic needs, children services, housing, mental health and violence prevention and treatment. Listed below are some highlights from the 2021 annual report.: Children and Family Services served 7,736 families and individuals Community Services food pantries issued 46, 467 meals and provided crises counseling for 47, 973 people related to COVID 19.

This year we will focus on Ruth Burrows’ Ascent to Love, and John of the Cross’s The Spiritual Canticle.

We end with 20 minutes of Centering Prayer.
