FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: If you could be with Jesus, what would you trade from your own things for that?

Question for Youth: Today’s gospel reminds us that God’s kingdom is worth sacrifice. What do you need to sacrifice in order to follow God in your own life? Why are you willing to make that sacrifice?

Question for Adults: Using Jesus’ parable as your starting point, describe in your own words what the Reign of God is for you personally, and use a parable to describe it: “The reign of God is _____.”

The Sanctuary Lamp this week is burning for:

Church: Joe Nathanson

Requested by Nathanson Family

Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Chapel in honor of a living or deceased loved one. One intention is accepted per week (Sunday - Saturday) for the Lamp. The suggested donation is $25. RequestonlineHERE.

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD...

is one of the major milestones in Jesus’ public ministry, in which he took Peter, James, and John up a mountain (generally believed to be Mount Tabor in Israel) to pray with him. There, he transfigured before them, appearing with Moses and Elijah. The voice of God the Father from heaven cried out, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him” (Matthew 17:5). It is in this moment that Jesus is revealed to these disciples as the Son of Man, the Savior. Yet they are told to keep this encounter a secret until after his resurrection, a concept which they did not yet understand. As one of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary and an important aspect of Christian belief, the significance of the event is two-fold. Firstly, by exalting Jesus above all others, God reaffirms what we learned about Jesus at his baptism by John - that he is then Son of the Most High, King of the living, judge and ruler of all and serves as a sort of preview of his resurrection and glory. Second, it establishes that Jesus is the messenger of God, His voice on earth, and that all things are done through the will of the Father. Interestingly, we celebrate this great feast twice every year. The first occasion is on the Second Sunday of Lent. In each of the 3 cycles, we hear the story from the synoptic Gospels of Matthew (Year A), Mark (Year B) and Luke (Year C), and the communion antiphon references the decree from God referenced above (this is my son, etc.). The placement of the accounts on this day are fitting, as we hear a lot in the weeks that follow about the last weeks of the life of Jesus before his crucifixion. The second time is on August 6th. The same Gospel is repeated in the respective years. When the 6th falls on a Sunday (as it does this year), the Feast supplants whichever Sunday in Ordinary Time the Church would normally observe that day. Although removed from the narrative through-line that we experience during Lent, the placement of this feast in the middle of Ordinary Time allows for a more joyous celebration to occur. Although not a Holy Day of Obligation (except when on Sunday), it IS an important day in the calendar of the church, and those who are able are encouraged to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist.

The last rehearsal for the performance of Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi will be held:

Christopher is one of the most popular saints in both the East and in the West. Many stories surround him, some contradictory and confusing.

One of the most popular traditions holds that Christopher was a strong giant who made his living by carrying people across a raging stream. For years, he searched in vain to find someone more powerful than himself. He finally concluded that this could only be Christ, since the devil feared Christ. One of his passengers was a small child who grew so heavy as they crossed the stream that Christopher thought they would both drown. The child then identified himself as Read More HERE.

CONTRIBUTE

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This “treasure’ does have its cost: we must actively search, find, sort. In the gospel the seekers go out in obvious places to find the treasure. For us our discovery of the kingdom is most often in our everyday circumstances when we experience overwhelmingly in the in-breaking of God’s presence. This may be something so simple as the smile of a person’s grateful thanks or the sense of rightness that comes with fidelity to daily prayer. The challenge is to recognize that God chooses to be present to us!

We have completed the two-week July Virtual Module of our Summer RE Program. I have heard many ;positives from families who have participated. Some were very grateful since this model allows families to be away from 07722 while still completing RE. The August two-week In Person Module of our Summer RE Program begins in a few weeks. Registration is fully sunscribed. Please note that during this program the buildings will have limited accessibility in accord with the Safe Environment Norms and Child Protection Policies. Thank you for your cooperation.

There will be a New Parishioner Orientation during the month of August. We continue to welcome those who have moved into 07722 recently. Participation in this informative session is required. It is a time to learn of our history and expectations for membership in our Parish Community. I am grateful to our staff for taking the time to be present to our new parishioner families and answer their questionsandconcerns.

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is observed during the month of August. We have a revised Mass Schedule for Holy Days. We are coordinating Mass Times with our Co-hort Parish of Saint Catherine, Holmdel. Rather than having masses celebrated at the same time, they are now staggered to allow more flexibility for parishioners to participate. Please consult the e-bulletin for more details. Thank you for your cooperation as we strive to serve the many and varied needs of our parishioners.

We continue to make slow, steady progress toward our 2023 Annual Catholic Appeal Goal. Our number of participating households has increased just over 5% from last year; the average gift has decreased slightly. I encourage everyone e to participate in an appropriate way fro your family Thank you for your generous sacrificial sharing to support His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton as he oversees this local church throughout Central New Jersey.

The summer continues as we begin the month of August. I hope that you can enjoy some outdoor time before we launch into the fall season. When travelling don’t forget to locate a Roman Catholic Church for Sunday Mass. It is good to experience how other communities come together for prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.
