Mass Etiquette: Things To Do And Not Do While at Mass •

Don’t chew gum in church. It breaks your fast, it’s distracting, it is consider impolite in a formal setting, and it doesn’t help us pray better. Can you imagine the Pope popping gum in during Mass? Chewing gum does break the Eucharistic fast! Please, please, no gum, food or drink in the Church! Babies’ necessities are accepted. God will provide all that you need at Mass.

Do not leave early. We should stay to the end of the recession and the hymn that accompanies it, if there is one. While there are certainly exceptions to this guideline, most who leave early don’t need to and ought not to.

Leave quietly. We encourage you to visit with others, but once you are outside of the nave of the church, in our gathering space, so you will not disturb others who want to stay and pray.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This “treasure’ does have its cost: we must actively search, find, sort. In the gospel the seekers go out in obvious places to find the treasure. For us our discovery of the kingdom is most often in our everyday circumstances when we experience overwhelmingly in the in-breaking of God’s presence. This may be something so simple as the smile of a person’s grateful thanks or the sense of rightness that comes with fidelity to daily prayer. The challenge is to recognize that God chooses to be present to us!

This weekend we welcome to the Saturday 5:00pm Mass the participants and facilitators for our First Choir Camp. We had 40 participants this year. The participants have come to lead us during the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. We welcome these children and young people as well as their parents and family members. This choir camp is one way we are striving to continue the Church’s long tradition of sharing a vast repertoire so that future generations will continue to be inspired when they come to Mass. There was a special focus on teaching Gregorian Chant which remains the crown jewel of our Catholic Liturgical Music. Thanks to our staff persons, especially Lauren and Andrew, for coordinating this effort and continuing to invite greater participation in our parish music ministry and choirs. May we continue to provide the very best in our Sacred Worship of God and our communal prayer.

Thank you for your generous support of the School Backpack program to assist those families in need. Your sacrificial efforts enable

us to provide for those in need. Ticket sales for the Love Thy Neighbor/Parish 45th Anniversary Celebration are underway. Tickets may be purchased online. You will be able to print out a receipt to be presented upon arrival to the event. This method will also provide a reminder several days prior to the event. Come and be a part of this wonderful event. Work continues on the commemorative book that is being assembled. We have received items, photos and booklets that had been distributed through the years…some of which we did not have in our parish archives. I am grateful to the committee members for their efforts.

We have some new concrete planters for our parish campus courtesy of parishioners, Bill and Linda Stagliano. The children from our Future Generation childcare center worked to place the flowers and plants in these new planters under the careful oversight of staff member, Linda. A great addition to our parish campus. This weekend I welcome Reverend Fr. Carlo Dell’Osso who is a professor of Patristics and Christology in Rome for a quick visit. Fr. Carlo is in Washington, DC for a month researching various topics for his teaching and upcoming published works. This will be his first visit since my transfer in 2013.

Please join me in welcoming Fr. Carlo to our parish and 07722.

The Summer continues as we begin the month of August. I hope that you can enjoy some outdoor time before we launch into the Fall season. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.
