GREEN - Ordinary Time Symbolizes life. Used in Ordinary Time, in which the Gospel readings tell of the story of Jesus’ earthly ministry, laden with parables and other teachable moments.

WHITE - Christmas, Easter, Feasts and Solemnities of the Lord and Saints, Marian, Requiem Symbolizes purity, light, glory of God. Used during the joyous seasons of the year, as well as for important Holy Days, and at Masses of Christian Burial.

VIOLET - Advent, Lent, Requiem Symbolizes preparation and penance. Used during the penitential seasons, All Souls Day, sometimes used at Masses of Christian Burial.

ROSE - Gaudate Sunday, Laetare Sunday Symbolizes rejoicing, or anticipation of great things to come. Used on the penultimate Sundays of the penitential seasons to indicate a shift in mood from that of reflection to looking forward to the coming joyous season, but not fully living in that joy just yet.

RED - Passion, Holy Spirit Used on Palm Sunday and Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion, and on feasts or memorials of martyrs, symbolizing the blood shed for the faith. Also used on Pentecost and at Confirmation to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirt.

GOLD or SILVER may be used as a substitute for White, with gold especially for the Christmas and Easter seasons. Also used as accent colors on vestments with other primary colors.

BLACK is sometimes permitted for use at Masses for the Dead, although not common in the United States.

BLUE is associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although it is not used on vestments as a primary color, it may be otherwise featured. For example, all clergy in the Diocese of Trenton have cream-colored vestments with gold and blue accents, as the Cathedral is named in honor of the Assumption of Mary.

Saint of the Week: Maria Goretti, Virgin and Martyr, 1890-1902 Saints don’t necessarily have to have lived a long, sanctified life. This saint was only twelve years old when she was martyred.

Born the third of seven children to a poor farmer near Ancona, Italy, Maria was described by her mother as “happy, good, openhearted, without whim, but with a sense and seriousness far beyond her years, and never disobedient.” The family’s circumstances meant that even the children had to work as farmhands for other people. Because of this, Maria and the other children received no schooling.

When Maria was nine, her father died. Maria’s mother, sisters, and brother continued to work the fields while Maria cooked, sewed, and kept house for the family.

On June 9, a Summer Social was held to raise funds for Collier Youth Services and to give special recognition to three of their loyal donors - The Shore Building Association of Central New Jersey and Professional Women in Building of the Garden State, the Women's Club of Colts Neck and the Martha Mary Guild of St. Mary Church..

The Martha Mary Guild donates a portion of the proceeds from the annual Clothing/Linen Sale (which will be held on 9/8, 9/9 & 9/10 this year) to contribute to worthwhile causes like Collier's Kateri Day Camp. More than 175 campers from low income families are bussed to the beautiful grounds of Collier, where they enjoy many activities together, while learning to care for and respect others. Every Spring the Guild collects a host of items for Kateri - like bathing suits, beach towels, pool toys, sandals and books for children ages 5-13.

If the reader is not acquainted with Collier, it is highly recommended that you "google" it and learn about Kateri, the Jr. High School and the High School. Monmouth County is very fortunate to have Collier here!
