Altar Servers An altar server is a person who assists the clergy during the celebration of a liturgy. Their role can be traced back to the third century. The roles of an altar server include: Thurifer: one who carries the thurible containing the lit charcoal and boat containing the incense. They carry this during the procession and recession, and assist the priest or deacon any time the use of incense is prescribed during Mass. Cross-bearer: one who carries the processional crucifix during the procession, recession, and sometimes during the presentation of the offering from the faithful. Candle-bearers: usually two persons, they carry processional candlesticks during the procession and recession, and accompany the procession of the book of gospels. Any of the above duties are also performed in liturgical processions of any kind, such as a Eucharistic procession, stations of the cross, etc. Altar servers will also ring the Sanctus Bells at the epiclesis and elevation, assist the clergy in preparing the altar prior to the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and hold any liturgical books for the priest during the liturgy. When a bishop celebrates Mass, 2 altar servers, wearing either white gloves or vimpas (a liturgical garment, similar to a shawl, worn over the shoulders, with pockets for the hands) will hold the miter and crosier for the bishop, and present them to him at appropriate times. Sometimes the term “server” is confused with “acolyte”. In the Roman Catholic church, the latter term refers to an instituted acolyte, a male who is preparing for the diaconate (and possibly later the priesthood) and is authorized to purify and arrange the sacred vessels after the distribution of Holy Communion. In other Christian denominations, the term “acolyte” is synonymous with “attendant” and they carry out similar duties as Catholic altar servers. Altar servers fulfill many important duties at Mass, and, at some solemnities, as many as 6 or more are necessary to completely realize the fully dignified potential of those celebrations. At most other liturgical celebrations, 2 servers will often suffice.

Missionary Co-op Weekend is August 18/19, 2018
Visiting us this year is The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of MataraĚ (www.servidoras.org or www.ssvmmissions.org ), a missionary Institute of religious sisters.
From our beginnings in San Rafael, Argentina in 1988 we have grown to over 1200 sisters missioning in almost 40 different countries throughout the world. We strive to go where the presence of religious sisters is most needed. Although we are an international community, we have been blessed with many vocations from the United States a bit over 100 at present. This appeal allows us to inform the members of your parish about our mission work in Argentina. As you may imagine, our missions in places like Argentina are in great need of support. The sisters work in several schools, providing education for children and teenagers. They also have two homes for persons with special needs. Since most of the school students and residents in the houses of mercy come from poor families, the sisters also take care of the families by giving them some assistance. As you may know, Argentina is not economically stable at present.
Thank you so very much in advance for your generosity. There will be a second collection that weekend to bene it the SSVM Missions (Servants of the Lord). Checks should be made payable to Saint Mary Parish, please write Mission Appeal on the memo line.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This gospel account is far more than an interesting “super size” story; it primes us to ponder the great mystery of Jesus himself as the Bread of Life (which we will hear about on subsequent Sundays) and his self-giving that enables us to share in it. The challenge for us is far more than believing in Jesus’ self -giving as a sign of fulfillment and promise of eschatological glory that we share even now. We Christians are to see our lives through the lens of God’s lavish abundance. Do we? Our seminarian intern RJ has completed his time with us. He had some very nice learning experiences while serving our community. I am grateful to all those who helped him this Summer. There were so many encouraging words and notes. Thank you for your kindnesses. Our Dynamic Catholic Adult Faith Formation Event scheduled for this September is nearly fully subscribed. This is being hosted by our parish and is sponsored by the Cohort 13 Parishes which include Saint Gabriel, Marlboro, Saint Benedict, Holmdel, Saint Catherine of Genoa, Holmdel and St. Mary, Colts Neck. Entrance tickets have been reserved by
participants coming from throughout NJ and the surrounding states. Dr. Hunt is a nationally recognized presenter, and we are pleased that his schedule enables him to be with us. Details are in the parish bulletin and on the website. So, if you think you may want to participate, act now! Our Super 50/50 Raffle tickets are now available online and at our parish office. This year we are dedicating 100% of the proceeds to pay some of the back bills that are still owed. Our stewardship has enabled us to reduce these payable debts substantially throughout these past years. Now we are down to the final two stemming from the 2013-14 period. They represent our Catholic High School Co-Sponsorship contributions. The amount owed is $53,671.42. We need broad base participation in order to reduce this financial obligation. I am so grateful to you for your generous support of our parish. Thank you. This week we begin the month of August. A reminder that Summer is here in full swing. Take time to enjoy the very best Summer offers us here in NJ. I have enjoyed a bit of gardening this year and all that goes with it… poison ivy. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

July Summer Intensive— We came, we learned, we put our faith into action! We have finished our July Summer Intensive Session. With our amazing staff of professional Catholic School teachers, our brilliant and engaging students and the support of our parents and families, our session was awesome! We are amazed and inspired by the learning that was done, the community that was built and the spirit of fun and sharing that the kids so naturally entered into. A special thank you to RJ the intern Seminarian, the St. Mary Parish Staff for their assistance throughout, and to our many volunteers who Seminarian RJ Balacillo conducting tour made it go as smoothly as it did! And last, but certainly not least, thank you to all the parents and family who of church during the July Summer Intensive Religious Education session. made the commitment to share the faith of our Church We wish RJ the best as he continues two with their children. It is the job of the whole community more years of his studies to complete his to initiate these young people into the faith—you are a degree in preparation for the blessing in the lives of these little ones.

Natural Family Planning - Living out God’s Plan for your marriage! Why does the Church want to encourage Natural Family Planning? Is it because she wants couples to have as many babies as humanly possible?? No! In fact the Catholic Church encourages people to be both generous and responsible stewards over their fertility. In this view of "responsible parenthood" married couples carefully think about the just reasons they may have to postpone or avoid pregnancy. When making decisions about the number and spacing of children in their family, they weigh their responsibilities to God, each other, the children they already have, and the world in which they live. Responsible parenthood is lived within the structures that God has established in human nature. The nature of sex, which is both life-giving (pro-creative) and lovegiving (unitive), reflects a Divine plan. That is why the Church teaches that husband and wife must not actively intervene to separate their fertility from their bodily union. NFP methods respect the Divine plan and are at the service of authentic married love. For more information about NFP education in our area, contact Peg Hensler 609-403-7156 or phensler@dioceseoftrenton.org.
