However, Not his mother’s family heritage is somewhat neglected, and we also know nothing factual about them except that they existed. Even the names “Joachim” and “Anne” come from a legendary source written more than a century after Jesus died, but are generally accepted as true.

The heroism and holiness of these people however, is inferred from the whole family atmosphere around Mary in the Scriptures. Whether we rely on the legends about Mary’s childhood or formulate educated assumptions from the information in the Bible, we see in her a fulfillment of many generations of prayerful persons, herself steeped in the religious traditions of her people.

The strong character of Mary in making decisions (her acceptance of God’s will, the raising of her son, etc), her continuous practice of prayer, her devotion to the laws of her faith, her steadiness at moments of crisis, and her devotion to her relatives—all indicate a close-knit, loving family that looked forward to the next generation even while retaining the best of the past.

Saints Joachim and Anne are the patrons of grandparents. As such, this Sunday has been designated as the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly by Pope Francis - a day to honor the aged among us as gifts to the Church and to our greater society.

Saint Anne is also honored as the patroness of women in labor and patroness of the nation of Canada.

Saint of the Week: Mary Magdalene, Disciple of Jesus, First Century With the exception of Mary, the mother of Jesus, few women are more honored in Scripture than Mary Magdalene.

An unfounded, but persistent legend identifies her as the unnamed, sinful woman who anointed the feet of Jesus (Luke 7:37-38), but this story has largely been discounted by modern church scholars. The next chapter of Luke's Gospel mentions Mary Magdalene as the one from whom Christ cast out "seven devils," - an indication, at the worst, of extreme demonic possession, or, more likely, severe illness.

Mary probably received her name from Magdala, a place on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee near Tiberias.

(Supporting A Community with Kindness) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization where people from all over the world knit/crochet sacks and then donate them (with a bar of soap in each one) to homeless shelters, food pantries, veteran clinics, social service agencies and relief efforts. Since S.A.C.K. was founded in 2017, over 140,000 soap sacks have been donated globally!

The response to these soap sacks are overwhelmingly positive especially since people cannot purchase toiletry items such as soap with government subsidies such as food stamps. Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If we all persisted in praying for the gift of the indwelling Spirit, were faithful in sharing the abundance of God’s life and gifts that the Spirit brings, and held as primary our relationship with God, then our prayer for our needs would probably be different. There is nothing wrong with prayer for specific needs; after all, we do it every Mass at the general intercessions, not to mention our own prayers of petition. This gospel challenges us to go beyond specific needs and get the larger picture; a focus on the gift of the indwelling Spirit is already God’s answer to all our prayers. What inspires confidence in us is not whether God gives us what we ask for in prayer; our confidence comes from the Spirit who dwells within and establishes a most intimate relationship between God and us-shared life.

This weekend we welcome some grandparents of our parishioner children as well as parishioner grandparents who are hosting their grandchildren for mass and a reception following in Madonna Hall. His Holiness, the Pope, has encourage us to host such intergenerational gatherings to connect older and younger Catholics. Respect for the aging and elderly is an important component of the Church’s teaching on respect for all human life. Thanks to Julia Cullen for overseeing this opportunity here in our parish.

His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton has directed all parishes within our diocese to take up a collection this weekend to assist in the care of our distinguished retired priests.

Costs continue to rise and it is now time to invite all of the faithful to assist in the care of our diocesan priests. We have included a line item in the drop down box for on-line gifts and there will be a receptacle in the narthex of the church as well.

Thank you for prayerfully considering a gift in honor of our retired priests.

Our Summer Session Religious Education Module I is concluded. Module II will commence in a few weeks. This option for RE rests upon the foundation that families participate in Sunday Mass weekly as well as Intergenerational Sessions. We have made some progress…however we have a long way to go in order to achieve our goal. I am grateful to those families who are helping us to strengthen our commitment to forming and educating our young people in our Catholic Faith.

The month of August begins in a few weeks. Our attention begins to focus on back to school issues. This weekend we are hosting the Jersey Club of the University of Notre Dame as they gather incoming freshman for Mass and a cookout here on our parish campus. They have been doing this for many years and most recently here in 07722. It is wonderful to encounter these young people excited and hesitant about beginning this new chapter in their life. Other students from our parish will begin or return to college life. Others will return to or begin their journey through high school. These are exciting times for our students as they begin to learn the lessons of life…starting over…making new friends…discovering new things in their own lives. Those who may need childcare services for their toddlers and preschoolers might check out the Future Generations program here on our parish campus. I continue to receive positive feedback from families who entrust their children to this program.

This weekend we will welcome Father Mateo Zamora, OSB, monk and priest of Saint Meinrad Archabbey. He will be visiting us as part of Brother Gregory’s supervised summer internship.

We are grateful for the care and oversight Saint Meinrad School of Theology exercises in forming priests for the future of our Catholic Church.
