Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion The role of the Extraordinary Minister is simple and straightforward, but quite important in the life of the local church. The Minister of the Eucharist is the priest, as he is the only one who can consecrate the Eucharist. An Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion is an ordained bishop, priest, or deacon. Due to the low number of priests and deacons in our country, and the sizes of some congregations, it becomes necessary for assistance. Enter… The Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion administers Communion “only when the Priest and Deacon are lacking, when the Priest is prevented by weakness or advanced age or some other genuine reason, or when the number of faithful coming to Communion is so great that the very celebration of Mass would be unduly prolonged” (Redemptionis Sacramentum) The EMHC also distributes communion to the homebound faithful. Again, with the low number of priests and deacons who have other functions to serve, the ability of a lay person to fill this role becomes increasingly important. Who can become an extraordinary minister? A Catholic in good standing with the Church is vetted by the local priest or deacon, and then appointed by the local bishop.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We all need to go off to a “deserted place” occasionally to “rest a while.” Whether this means taking some time alone each day to pray and rest in God, making Sunday truly a day of rest, or setting aside a few days a year to make a retreat, all of us need time to regain our strength so we can take up our own shepherding tasks. If the mission overwhelms us, we will be unable to persevere. Achieving a balance between the work of discipleship and the need to rest from weariness can be no easy task in itself. Like Jesus, we are called to shepherd—to care, teach, heal, listen, etc.— and, also like Jesus, we are called to make our life one characterized by self-giving. Somehow we are to balance this with rest, with time to replenish our spirit and energy. Self-giving and rest are two parallel poles to the dying and rising dynamic of the paschal mystery. Too much dying can crush us. Too much rest can lull us into being uncaring shepherds. Gospel living faithful to the mission Jesus has given us requires that we balance contemplation and action. In other words, the mission itself includes downtime. This is how we have fresh encounters with the Jesus who cares—by taking time to rest in him. Let him shepherd us. The Finding Your Greatness Dynamic Catholic Event being sponsored by our Cohort 13 Parishes and hosted here in our parish is quickly selling out. Tickets are available online. I am told that there are fewer than 50 tickets available. Those who are
interested should act now. Information is contained in the weekly bulletin and online at our website. Don’t miss out on this awesome opportunity. Our parish music ministry is presenting a Summer Concert held in the Church. Details are in the bulletin. Our Annual Super 50/50 tickets are now available online and at the parish office. We need you to participate in this fundraiser. This year, in consultation with parish advisory groups, 100% of the net proceeds will be dedicated to paying off the last two bills from the 2013-14 period in our parish. We have repaid and are up to date with all of the other payables from that period. It is our hope to retire these remaining bills as we continue to retire our payables debt. Thank you for your generous sharing so that our parish can regain a firm financial foundation. Buy your ticket this week. This weekend our Seminarian Intern RJ will conclude his time with us. This coming week he will join other seminarians from our Diocese of Trenton on retreat. Then he will enjoy a few weeks of vacation as he travels home to the Philippines to visit with his parents, family and friends. We thank RJ for his presence and service among us these past weeks. Let us continue to pray for RJ as he continues his discernment and preparation for the Sacrament of Holy Orders as a Priest. Let us also pray for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life in service to our Catholic Church. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week Starts TODAY! Is Natural Family Planning really reliable? - YES!! Modern methods of NFP are not at all related to the “rhythm method” of decades ago! Many years of medical and scientific research have helped couples and medical professionals to more fully understand a woman’s complex fertility cycles in order to provide very reliable methods of family planning AND since a woman’s reproductive health can affect many other aspects of health, today’s NFP methods offer better comprehensive women’s healthcare. NFP is not only reliable, but it is the only authentic method of family planning. Since NFP methods are not ‘contraception’, their effectiveness works both ways—for achieving and avoiding pregnancy. When couples wish to achieve a pregnancy they can time sexual intercourse to the fertile window of the menstrual cycle, thereby optimizing the possibility of becoming pregnant. When wishing to avoid pregnancy, studies show that couples who follow their NFP method's guidelines correctly, and all the time, achieve effectiveness rates of 97-99%. Today begins Natural Family Planning Awareness Week!! Please check out the display in the gathering space this weekend and next weekend for great information!
