On Sacred Music…. According to Pope Pius X, “Sacred music should possess, in the highest degree, the qualities proper to the liturgy, or more precisely, sanctity and purity of form from which its other character of universality spontaneously springs. It must be holy, and must therefore exclude all profanity, not only from itself but also from the manner in which it is presented by those who execute it. It must be true art, for otherwise it cannot exercise on the minds of the hearers that influence which the Church meditates when she welcomes into her liturgy the art of music. But it must also be universal, in the sense that, while every nation is permitted to admit into its ecclesiastical compositions those special forms which may be said to constitute its native music, still these forms must be subordinated in such a manner to the general characteristics of sacred music, that no one of any nation may receive an impression other than good on hearing them.” The authors of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal add, “All other things being equal, Gregorian chant holds pride of place because it is proper to the Roman Liturgy. Other types of sacred music, in particular polyphony, are in no way excluded, provided that they correspond to the spirit of the liturgical action and that they foster the participation of all the faithful.” “While the organ is to be accorded pride of place, other wind, stringed, or percussion instruments may be admitted into divine worship in the Dioceses of the United States of America, according to longstanding local usage, in so far as these are truly suitable for sacred use, or can be made suitable.” So what does this all mean? Here are the main points to consider: Music should be well-composed, of high musical quality, and be executed well, in a professional manner. Chant has both an important history as well as contemporary importance in the Church and it should be present in our musical vocabulary. Other styles of music are permissible, with careful attention paid to text and suitability for liturgical use. (Side note: there are many modern Christian compositions which fall short of this. As such, these songs are not suitable for using during Mass, but may find a home in private devotional settings, prayer services, etc) In terms of instrumentation, the organ is to be given prominence. Other instruments are permitted, provided they serve the style of music (and by extension, the music serves the liturgy.)

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our own lives and times we carry much baggage on our journey as disciples of Jesus. We have closets full of clothes, pantries and refrigerators full of food: many of us are armed with college degrees. The practical instructions of Jesus to his Twelve would not serve us well today; it would be irresponsible to divest ourselves of all our possessions. (The Martha Mary Clothing Sale will soon be upon us!) At the same time this gospel does invite us to examine what it is that hinders us from fulfilling the mission on which Jesus sends all of us, beginning with our baptism. Each of us is a disciple who is sent. What distracts us from our mission? For most of us the greatest distractions probably don’t come from our possessions but from our interior emotions and attitudes. We don’t like rejection—so it is difficult to preach an unpopular gospel with its demands for righteousness and love. We don’t like the risk of being unsuccessful—so it is easier to live our religion by saying prayers rather than by ceaseless self-giving. We don’t like pushing our own faith to its limits—so it is easier to be more concerned with right doctrine than with right living. In spite of our excuses and human weakness, Jesus is clear: “Go…to my people” (first reading). We must keep moving forward with his mission.
Last weekend we welcomed families participating in this year’s Summer Intensive Religious Education Program. Our registration is nearly capacity for both sessions. Many thanks to all those who are serving as catechists for this program. The catechists come to us from various Catholic Schools throughout our Diocese of Trenton. Each of them is degreed, certified as a teacher, certified as a catechist, trained in the virtus safe environment program and have undergone background checks. All of this is required by our Diocese of Trenton Office of Child Protection in compliance with those directives adopted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. I am grateful to all of our parish staff and the scores of volunteers who have come forth to assist with this program and the formation of our young people. Next Sunday will be the last here in our parish for our Seminarian RJ. He will join other seminarians from our Diocese of Trenton for a week of retreat and then enjoy some vacation time. He will travel home to see his parents in the Philippines since they have not been together for a year. They will come to NJ in two years for his ordination to the priesthood, God willing in 2020. Many thanks for your kindnesses to RJ as he assisted us here in our parish. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week is Coming SOON! Isn’t Natural Family Planning only for women with “regular” cycles? - No! Natural Family Planning (NFP) does NOT depend on a woman having regular menstrual cycles! NFP treats each woman and each cycle as unique. These methods rely on daily observations of the woman's signs of fertility. NFP works with menstrual cycles of any length, any degree of irregularity, during breastfeeding, just before menopause, and in other special circumstances. NFP allows a woman to understand the physical signals her body gives her to tell her when she is most likely to become pregnant (around the time of ovulation). Once the woman understands this information, she and her husband can use the information according to their family planning intentions (i.e., to either achieve or postpone pregnancy). She is also able to better understand her own basic gynecologic health! Instruction in NFP provides women with information about their bodies that is specific and observable and can be used throughout a woman's reproductive life. When special circumstances occur, (e.g., stress, illness, breastfeeding, post-miscarriage, perimenopause, etc.), NFP instructors can provide additional guidance in interpreting signs of fertility. Next Sunday, July 22, starts National Natural Family Planning Awareness week! — Look for information and displays in our gathering space to learn more! For information about Natural Family Planning education in our area, contact Peg Hensler 609-403-7156 or phensler@dioceseoftrenton.org.
