The Importance of Text When ruminating on the choices of music for use during the liturgy, the trained musician will very likely search for and select pieces that are musically sound, with singable melodies, attainable rhythms and a rich harmonic structure. But that is only half of it - the TEXT of the pieces matters greatly, especially when used at Mass. The Psalms There are many translations of the psalms available to us. There are 2 approved for liturgical use: The translation in the Lectionary and the Revised Grail Psalms. The Lectionary psalms are in “plain English” and good for recitation. The Grail Psalms have more poetic language and are better for singing; better for setting to psalm tones. We also have many paraphrases of psalms that we can use at other places in our worship. Hymns and Songs When the text is taken from the sacred scriptures, we are good to go. When the text is original, that is, written by a lyricist or the composer, careful study is warranted. Text that is in Persona Christi, in the person of Christ, is one such point to study. If we find the words of Jesus in the Bible and sing them, maybe even slightly paraphrased, all is well. However, we must avoid “putting words in Jesus’ mouth”, even if the intent is honorable and the thematic material similar. Original text must be carefully chosen so that it enlightens the minds, hearts and spirits of those who sing and hear it. It should reaffirm our faith, strengthen our beliefs, and above all, praise our God and creator. Text that makes us question these things, or takes too wide of an interpretation that could obfuscate the intent of the writer, is generally considered to be poor in quality and should be avoided in Catholic worship. Luckily, editors of hymnals and worship materials are getting much more meticulous these days and we are seeing corrections in older songs, new lyrics added, old lyrics removed, and new music being written. Every single day we are adding to our treasure of sacred and religious music and that is something to celebrate.

Mass Etiquette: Things To Do And Not Do While at Mass No bulletin reading during Mass. Imagine if you invited a guest to your house and before dinner (or during) they decided to read a magazine instead of talking to you. That is what is happening in God’s house when you read the bulletin. Do not leave early. We should stay to the end of the recession and the hymn that accompanies it, if there is one. While there are certainly exceptions to this guideline, most who leave early don’t need to and ought not to. Pray after Mass, if you feel called to do so. It is a good custom, though not required, to offer a prayer of thanksgiving after Mass is over. www.aggiecatholicblog.org

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Death is part of our human lives. Yet, Jesus’ inauguration of God’s kingdom vanquishes death and restores life. Like Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage, all we need do to overcome death is reach out and touch the nearness of Jesus. Death not only means the cessation of physical life but also all those everyday “dyings to self” that call us to surrender our wills to God’s will. In the Christian mystery, death is the doorway to life. Just as Jairus and the woman forgot their own stations in life and overcame their fears in order to receive life from Jesus, so must we surrender our own wills in order to encounter Jesus and receive life. God’s kingdom of life is not built by avoiding death, but by embracing it. Living the paschal mystery is none other than our daily dying to self--overcoming our fears and reaching out to Jesus in humility---in all the little practical ways that fill our daily routines. Paschal Mystery dying is as simple as smiling at the children even when we are bone tired or taking an hour out of our day to visit the sick. When we surrender in humility to his goodness and power, Jesus offers us life. For our reflection this week: How can your faith have an impact on other people’s lives? What does it mean for you as disciples to build a kingdom of life? As we end another fiscal year, it is important for us to pause and to give thanks and praise to almighty God for all the blessings we continue to receive. Even in the midst of some uncertainty, there are countless blessings for us to acknowledge. This is especially important as we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of our country this coming week. Independence Day is a time to acknowledge the freedom that we enjoy and the sacrifices that have been made and continue to be made in order
for us to live in a free society. Consider joining us for the celebration of Mass on 4 July as the beginning of your Independence Day Celebration. Our parish staff is busy preparing for our Summer Session Religious Education Programs. Our registration has been very good. I am grateful to those participating families for registering in a timely manner so that we can properly prepare for all of our participants. During the days of these programs there is limited access to our facilities in accordance with the norms for providing safe environments. Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we strive to provide the very best for our young people. Also, I am pleased to report that we have many young people who will be assisting with the program again this year. Seminarian RJ will be present throughout the month of July and offer a talk each day. Deacon John will present during the August session. We are finalizing the draft of our 2018-2019 master calendar. This process is important so that we might provide for parish use as well as community use of our facilities. Our campus is truly a hub of activity thanks to the stewardship of our faithful parishioners. Thank you for your generous sharing. Many thanks to all those who helped with last weekend’s Agape. It is our hope to continue inviting others to join with the preparation and clean up for these community building events. It was so nice to have our Pastor Emeritus with us. He is blessed with good health and a great outlook on life. He will celebrate a milestone birthday in the coming year and I hope that he will be among us so that we can celebrate with him. Time will tell. Enjoy these Summer days. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Natural Family Planning Awareness Week is coming soon!
Join us at The Parish of Saint Mary on September 22, 2018 for this event and discover how to master the four signs of a Dynamic Catholic in your life. Tickets are $25. Find Your Greatness is a 4 parish Co-Hort 13 event , which is nearly sold out! If you are interested in attending, please purchase your tickets online DyanamicCatholic.com or in the Parish Office.
So, what is Natural Family Planning (or NFP) anyway? The Church encourages married couples to learn about NFP methods because they represent authentic family planning that can be used either to achieve or postpone pregnancy. NFP makes use of periodic abstinence from sex based upon the observation of the woman’s natural signs of fertility, in order to space births or to limit the number of children when there is a serious reason to do so. No drugs, devices, surgical procedures, or other artificial means are ever used to avoid pregnancy. This practice fosters in married couples an attitude of respect and wonder in their openness to human life, which is always sacred! It also fosters profound respect for one’s spouse, which is necessary for authentic intimacy. Be on the lookout for more information about Natural Family Planning in the bulletin each week leading up to Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, July 22-28. For more information about Natural Family Planning education in our area, contact Peg Hensler at 609-403-7156 or phensler@dioceseoftrenton.org.
