The Importance of the Epiphany The Epiphany of the Lord is important in many ways, which is which is why the celebration is transferred to a Sunday, despite the date actually being January 6th (the 12th day of Christmas).

Theologically, the importance of Epiphany is of the revelation of the Savior to the non-Jewish people. This is such a significant event that we have the wise men and the star depicted in so many works of art, in our nativity sets, and in our music.

Many Christmas carols are actually Epiphany carols.

The First NoĂŤl is a popular carol that details the arrival of the magic and their gifts.

The same is true of What Child is This, set to the tune of Greensleeves.

The Star Carol, What Star is This and others also tell the story of the Epiphany or some aspect of it.

And, of course, the ever popular We Three Kings, which details the significance of each of the gifts brought to the newborn King.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

All gifts given invite a response. Socially, a verbal or written thank you note usually suffices. Simply because God’s generosity is so lavish our response must be much more.

God has given us great treasure, two of which are mystery so deep: the gift of the only-begotten Son and our being “members of the same body” (see second reading).

Our response can be no less than the total gift of ourselves. “Total gift of ourselves” is one way to describe the paschal mystery. In our baptism we become “coheirs” and “copartners” in Christ, in his death and resurrection. We are copartners, therefore, in Jesus’ ministry. To be a disciple means not only to live the gospel, it also means that we will go to our death as Jesus did. “Total gift of ourselves” means that daily we must die to ourselves if we are to remain faithful to our identity with Christ. Why would we choose to respond to God’s generosity in such a radical way? Because we know that by dying to ourselves we are “coheirs”—we receive God’s life now and the promise of fullness to come.

It has been so very nice to see family members of our parishioners, former parishioners and newcomers worshipping with us during this festive time. I thank all of you for your very gracious spirit of hospitality and your reverence and joy in celebrating the liturgy.

These distinguish our parish from so many others. The vibrancy of our worship and the

active participation of so many enable us to fully embrace the church’s vision for worship.

May God bless all of you for your dedication and fidelity to our common sacramental life.

As we begin another new year, take the time to reflect on the past year…what was good?… what was not so good?…how can I do better? …what is God calling me to do or become?

The path to holiness of life is conversion or a change in attitude or disposition. Maybe the beginning of a new calendar year is the impetus you need to take inventory of your life? This is more than a New Year’s resolution…it is a prayerful way in which we honestly search for the inner peace and harmony that God calls us to cultivate in our lives as people who are saved and truly blessed.

The generous sharing of so many for the Solemnity of Christmas once again demonstrates your spirit of generosity and love of our parish. The Christmas Season will conclude liturgically with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord observed next weekend.

There is so much for which we must be thankful…let us not overlook the many sacrifices that so many of our forebears have made in order for us to be here today. Let us cultivate within ourselves a spirit of selflessness.

The Epiphany - text by Lucille Castro Here we see Mary showing Jesus to the Magi, visitors who symbolize the people of the entire world. As these people present their gifts that show their awareness of Jesus as God of all people, Mary holds Jesus towards the visitors. After their long journey of searching, these visitors have found the One they sought. Like these visitors, we have followed the Star of God's love and have found Jesus. Perhaps, like the Magi, we have traveled in the midst of darkness and difficulty. This window reminds us that like Mary, we are called to bring Jesus to all people. As we look at this window, let us pray that the Light of Jesus will touch and guide the lives of all, especially those who are seeking meaning in life. Let us also pray that this Light will help dispel areas of personal, local and global darkness.

The Martha Mary Guild Will Feature “CASA” in January CASA is the acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocates and their office is right here in Colts Neck on Rte. 34. So the Martha Mary Guild decided that it’s about time that we learn about this very important neighbor! This quote explains their function: “CASA is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect and learn to grow in the safe embrace of a loving family.”

They have a network of 951 community-based programs that recruit, train and support citizenvolunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. These volunteer advocates, who are empowered directly by the courts, offer judges the critical information they need to ensure that each child’s rights and needs are being attended to while they are in foster care.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in Madonna Hall, a representative of CASA, will explain more about the wonderful work they do for children, who could very easily be “lost in the system” without CASA. The presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m., after Guild members and welcomed guests have their lunch (BYOL- Bring Your Own Lunch) and dessert - provided by the Guild. The rosary will be prayed in the Chapel of the Spiritual Center at 11:30 a.m.

Note to members: Kindly bring warm hats, scarves and/or gloves which will be distributed to CASA. Below are pictures portraying the Guild members’ generosity in December – the baby gifts for Birthright and Christmas gifts for our “Adopt-a-Family”, with some Board members who shopped and wrapped. Thank you again for your kindness.
