Word of God Sunday On September 30, 2019 Pope Francis issued a motu proprio declaring that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be the Sunday of the Word of God, dedicated to the celebration, reflection and dissemination of the Word. What does this mean for Catholics? A few key points are outlined below for reflection.

Through the lectionary readings, God speaks to his people in both the Old Testament (the Hebrew Scriptures) and the New, with the Gospels holding the highest place in the Liturgy of the Word.

The singing of the psalm is the response of the Church at prayer.

The ambo, from which the readings are proclaimed, is of significance and importance in the church building. Not merely a lectern from which announcements are read, but a special place from which the Word of God is proclaimed to the faithful.

If you already take part in the Liturgy of the Hours, take some time to reflect on the significance of scripture in these daily activities. If you do not regularly pray any of the hours, consider beginning the practice.

Take this Sunday and other days throughout the next few weeks to reflect on the Word of God that you hear proclaimed at Mass, and remember that as Catholics we celebrate with both Word and Eucharist. A Happy Sunday to all!

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Please arrive earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing.  Masks, Hand Sanitizer, and Social/Physical distancing are required.  There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings; A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity.  Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed.  Holy Water has been drained from all locations.  Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.  Remove mask (and gloves) as you approach the Eucharist; put mask back in place as you return to your pew  Volunteers are greatly needed to wipe down the wood of the pews after all Masses (weekend and weekday). We will have a cleaning crew take care of the floors, bathrooms, etc, but need this little bit of additional help. Please contact Andrew if you are able.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE:  For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online.  Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall - do not arrive prior to 8:30 AM

2021-2022 Religious Education Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the possible exception of first grader families). This includes the New Parishioner Orientation meeting. Copies of each student’s Baptismal certificate and record of previously completed Religious Education classes (if applicable) and sacraments must be received by the office when registering in our program for the first time.

Please be aware that children entering grades 2-8 in Sept 2021 must have completed and passed their previous Religious Education grade work before they can be registered for the next school year. Additionally registration/class enrollment will not be processed until all paperwork is in the office. Returning Student(s) who do not have a copy of their Baptismal Certificate on file in the office WILL NOT be secured in a class for the 2021 - 2022 term.

Summer Intensive - Grades 1 - 6: Classes run Monday through Friday for 2 weeks from 8:30 am -12:30 pm (on Campus) or 9 am - 12 noon (Google Classroom). Admission is on a first come first serve basis. Classes close as they fill. We encourage you to register early.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday In Ordinary Time. Many of us might hear last Sunday’s and this Sunday’s gospel and think that it refers to Jesus’ call to some to enter priesthood or religious life.

This is understandable, since we often associate the notion of call or vocation with these two particular ways to live out one’s baptismal call. However, the opening context of preaching the gospel being a call to repentance and belief suggests that Jesus’ call is to all of us. Our first “answer” is in our baptism; but that is never a single nor definitive answer. The call to discipleship, to preaching the gospel, to repentance, to belief (essentially, these are all the same!) is one we hear over and over again as Jesus comes to us in the ordinary circumstances of our everyday lives. Our response, too, is made in the commonness of our everyday lives, in how we daily live out our baptismal call to become more and more like Christ. Jesus’ call to discipleship is a call to be who we are—baptized in Christ!

Tomorrow we celebrate the Feast of the Conversion of the Great Apostle Saint Paul which concludes the week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has designated this Sunday as Word of God Sunday. It has been an opportunity for the Catholic Church to reflect on the place of the Word of God in our lives. The writings ascribed to the Great Apostle are some of the most profound in the New Testament. They serve as a reminder of the Catholic Church’s essential mission to GO FORTH…to evangelize all people. This act of the entire Christian Faithful must be preceded by a careful and deliberate reflection on the Sacred Scriptures. Reading them at home prior to coming to Mass; Praying with these texts regularly in order to grow in our understanding of the truths which guide our doctrine; Learning how to understand and interpret these inspired texts in a balanced and hopeful way.

The Ministry of Evangelization is the responsibility of the entire community acting always with respect and perseverance in building the Kingdom of God in our midst.

Last week our country observed the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in our land. This is a highly controversial subject. There are many opinions about this practice, the freedoms we enjoy as Americans as well as

the separation of church and state. The Church has consistently taught that the deliberate taking of human life cannot be justified. The late Pope now Saint John Paul II further underscored this when clarifying the ambiguity surrounding capital punishment by stating that this too is morally unacceptable. The difference between capital punishment and abortion remains in the number of acts committed each year. Do some research and find out how wide the gap truly is…. Our modern and post-modern understanding of “freedom” needs to be reviewed and perhaps re-thought. Is it possible or even permissible to promote as a freedom that which can undermine the common good? As we live in a disposable culture can we understand life as something that is also disposable? Our country has been founded on the healthy principle of separation between Church and State. This means that there is no officially sanctioned religion in our country. Many throughout the world believe that this is one of the most important elements of the quilt in American Democracy. It is important to note that this principle in no way prohibits the healthy exchange that needs to be part of the democratic process. Faith based organizations are challenged to engage the public order in a healthy dialogue about how laws support or compromise the common good for all people.

Take some time to learn about the issues and become better informed as an American and as a Roman Catholic Christian.

Please join me in welcoming Fr. Gene who will be living with me in the parish house for a while. Fr. Gene is currently serving as a Chaplain in the NJ Army National Guard. He is living in our parish…He has not been assigned here as a Parochial Vicar, Associate, Curate or “In Residence”. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton has approved Fr. Gene living in our parish while serving the National Guard. He will be present to us celebrating weekday and weekend Masses here in our parish as well as in some of the other local single priest parishes as needed. I have known Fr. Gene for many years while he previously served in our Diocese of Trenton in Tuckerton and Mercerville. Great to have Fr. Gene with us. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.
