Registration for Summer Intensive 2018 Religious Education will begin Feb 1st Summer Intensive 1 : July 9 – 13 & 16 – 20 Summer Intensive 2 : August 6 – 10 & 13 - 17 Grades available for the Summer Intensive Program: Grades 1-6 (those children entering these grades in September 2017) on a first come, first serve basis. Families must be registered ac ve parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Educa on program for at least one year (with the excep on of first graders). However all families must be registered parishioners for at least 1 year prior to enrolling.

Times: Each session will include a Family Orienta on star ng with 12 noon Mass and ending at approximately 2 pm.  Session 1: Sunday, 8 July 12 noon Mass - 2 pm  Session 2: Sunday, 5 August 12 noon Mass - 2 pm Followed by classes Monday- Friday 8:30 am -12:30 pm.

Tui on:  

From Feb 1st through midnight March 31st the reduced tui on is $250 per child.

From April 1st through midnight May 15th the tui on rate of $300 a child will apply.

Program Expecta ons: Each family would be expected to par cipate in 4 intergenera onal events throughout the school year.

Including the Advent and/or Lenten Penance and Reconcilia on services. More details are outlined on the Intergenera onal web-page.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Feast of the Conversion of the Great Apostle Saint Paul. Our Holy Father, Benedict XVI, has declared this year to be the Year of Saint Paul.

It has been an opportunity for the Catholic Church to reflect on the place of the Word of God in our lives. The writings ascribed to the Great Apostle are some of the most profound in the New Testament. They serve as a reminder of the Catholic Church’s essential mission to GO FORTH…to evangelize all people. This act of the entire Christian Faithful must be preceded by a careful and deliberate reflection on the Sacred Scriptures. Reading them at home prior to coming to Mass; praying with these texts regularly in order to grow in our understanding of the truths which guide our doctrine; learning how to understand and interpret these inspired texts in a balanced and hopeful way. The Ministry of Evangelization is the responsibility of the entire community acting always with respect and perseverance in building the Kingdom of God in our midst.

This week our country observes the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in our land. This is a highly controversial subject. There are many opinions about this practice, the freedoms we enjoy as Americans as well as the separation of church and state. The Church has consistently taught that the deliberate taking of human life cannot be justified. The late Pope now Saint John Paul II further underscored this when clarifying the ambiguity surrounding capital punishment by stating that this too is morally unacceptable.

The difference between capital punishment and abortion remains in the number of acts committed each and every year. Do some research and find out how wide the gap truly is….

Our modern and post-modern understanding of “freedom” needs to be reviewed and perhaps re-thought. Is it possible

or even permissible to promote as a freedom that which can undermine the common good?

As we live in a disposable culture, can we understand life as something that is also disposable? Our country has been founded on the healthy principle of separation between Church and State. This means that there is no officially sanctioned religion in our country.

Many throughout the world believe that this is one of the most important elements of the quilt in American Democracy. It is important to note that this principle in no way prohibits the healthy exchange that needs to be part of the democratic process.

Faith based organizations are challenged to engage the public order in a healthy dialogue about how laws support or compromise the common good for all people.

Take some time to learn about the issues and become better informed as an American and as a Roman Catholic Christian.

His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, has assigned Deacon John Wedemeyer to serve in the Parish of Saint Mary Colts Neck.

The bishop acted on the recommendation of the Vicar for Clergy & Consecrated Life and following an interview that I had with Deacon Wedemeyer expressing my thoughts that some of our parish needs are congruent with his ministry interests. I am grateful to Msgr.

Mullelly for his pastoral solicitude in these matters. I expect our new deacon to begin ministry in our parish in the coming week or so.

Dr. Jim Bridges has begun his oversight in our parish community observing some of the programs that we offer and meeting some of the key volunteers in our religious education program and faith formation initiatives. Dr. Bridges will continue to reach out and learn about the many faith formation opportunities here in our parish. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

Happy New Year! A few words of thanks to all of our parishioners who have been so welcoming to our new Coordinator of Music, David, during the very busy liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas. Another word of thanks for your par cipa on in our many liturgies during these holy seasons and for the raising of your voices in praise to our Lord.

From me to me, ques ons are raised as to the role of music and the music ministry in the Church. Over the next few weeks, I will be answering some of these in short bulle n ar cles.

Why should we sing at Mass? A very important ques on that has fortunately simple answers. We should sing at Mass because the Universal Church asks us to. One of the driving reasons behind the reforms of the Second Va can Council was for “Full and ac ve par cipa on in the Mass”.

What does this mean? This means a en ve listening to the word of God during the liturgy of the word. This means that when we say “Thanks Be To God”, we truly mean it. This means that when we respond to the Word of the Lord in the psalm, we sing its an phon or refrain with our whole voice and heart. We watch, listen, and respond in song to the priest during the prayers of the Communion Rite. The Mass is not a spectator sport. We MUST par cipate.

The singing of the Propers of the Mass (the parts that change: the psalms, the communion an phon, etc) is a tradi on as old as the organized Church itself, and it is one that we carry on today.

The singing of the Ordinary (the parts of the Mass that do not change weekly: the Gloria, the Eucharis c Acclama ons, etc) is of utmost importance and are to always be sung at every Mass.

The singing of the hymns (a tradi on borrowed from our Protestant brethren, who borrowed it from the Catholic tradi on of singing hymns at the Liturgy of the Hours), although op onal, is s ll important, as the hymns that are chosen for a par cular day are meant to re-affirm the teachings of the readings from the day, or the nature of the liturgical season.

Don’t know the hymn or song? Listen to the first verse or two and join in later. Organ too loud? Not if the en re congrega on joins in the singing. Can’t carry a tune in a suitcase? Sing anyway, for the Lord will hear and be glad. CAN carry a tune in a suitcase? Join the choir!

We are so excited to be partnering with St. Benedict, Holmdel; St. Gabriel, Marlboro; and St. Catharine, Holmdel. We meet regularly in order to share news and events in our various ministries and groups. We are working to support the good work we are all doing in our individual parishes and to share this with our parishioners. We work together to implement action plans to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. We will be sharing events and news as they unfold.
