The Baptism of the Lord A “time jump” is a plot device used in many modern movies and television programs. One episode or movie in a series may take place several days, months, or years after the previous one. Sometimes this even occurs within a single episode or movie. But this is nothing new - many older novels such as Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables span many decades in their story telling.

And - we experience a similar effect in our Sunday Gospel readings during the Christmas Season.

We begin with the Nativity of the Lord, and the recounting of Jesus’ birth. The Sunday after Christmas is the Holy Family, where we jump to Jesus as an older child, staying behind in Jerusalem. One week after Christmas, the visitation of the shepherds is proclaimed on the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. In years where there occurs a second Sunday between Christmas and Epiphany, we jump back to the gospel proclaimed on Christmas Day: “The word became flesh and dwelt among us”. On the Epiphany, we have the visit of the magi from the east, and the Baptism of the Lord jumps 30 years to Jesus’ baptism by John in the Jordan River.

A very interesting timeline to consider. Some are confused by it all, but we shouldn’t be. The story of our salvation takes some detours, but the result remains the same.

The Baptism of the Lord also causes some confusion. It is at the same time the end of the Christmas Season and the beginning of Ordinary Time. We sing Christmas Carols, but also recount a time in the life of Jesus when he was 30 years old. The Joy of Christmas remains but we also are prepared to start numbering our days again as we get closer to the season of Lent.

As it says in the Gospel of John, “Do not let your hearts be troubled”. Keep Christ alive in your in hearts at Christmas and all the year long.

Early bird registration for our Summer Religious Education program will begin on February 1. Tuition is the same as last year. From 2/1-3/31 the tuition is $250 per child. Beginning April 1, the tuition goes up to $300. The dates for the two summer sessions are July 22 to August 2, and August 12-23. Classes will close when they fill up. Try to register early to secure your chosen session.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Baptism of the Lord.

These kind, merciful, and generous gifts of God are manifested to the world when we “live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age” (second reading). Yes, the gift of divine identity and its attendant call to discipleship does make demands on us. Taking our baptism seriously means that the ritual moment is just the beginning of a lifetime of openness to God’s continuing grace “training” us to be faithful to who God has made us to be. Our share in divinity is a gift so gracious that the only response is dying to self. But in the dying is the hope of a share in eternal life because the One whose identity we share has already been raised from the dead. Living the paschal mystery means that while our life manifests dying for the sake of others we also manifest the hope that is sure because God’s ultimate gift to us is everlasting life, a promise already fulfilled.

As we conclude the Liturgical Season of Christmas, I would like to express my personal thanks for the many acts of kindness that were shown to me and our parish staff. The thoughtful greetings, the delicious baked treats, the generous gifts were truly overwhelming. We have a

wonderful and community here and your efforts to maintain and even grow our community are an important part of evangelization. We will render to you an accounting of this year’s Christmas Collection very soon. A special word of thanks to the many parish volunteers who assisted and provided the decorations, cleaned and polished the vessels and appointments, printed, collated the worship aids…many hands make light work. Our music ministry worked very hard to prepare for this season as they continue to expand the repertoire of polyphony and chant for our worship in the sacred liturgy. Also, a word of thanks to all of the Colts Neck Residents who decorated the outside of their homes during this Season of Advent & Christmas. The long dark nights are a perfect time for the festive lights adorning the homes of Christians in our civic community. THANK YOU! Tomorrow we begin the Winter Ordinary Time liturgical season. We return to the green vestments, the chant mass propers until the Season of Lent begins in early March. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
